live at
das kleine field recordings festival

performing w/ john grzinich & paulo raposo
also performing: baruch gottlieb, matteo marangoni

from the dkfrf website:

"On the 6th of February the das kleine field recordings festival will come to Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. Baruch Gottlieb, whose performance almost exactly one year ago was considered as one of the best field recordings concerts ever seen, will come back again. While last years performance was an exploration and growingly hilarious account on the various sounds Korean Street Vendors used to atract clients, it could happen that this evenings performance concentrates on Swiss Cows.

The last part of the evening will bring a very unusual trio. In fact this is a dkfrf special. See it here, or never again. Paulo Raposo, murmer and John Grzinich will perform a partly acoustic set. More information will follow to explain why this is so special.

The evening will be opened by Matteo Marangoni. His sounds will come from different locations in Florence, a city with different acoustic ‘islands’ and recordings from The Hague, where he actually resides and studies."

workshop at
issue project room

i will be giving a one-day version of the revenant:sound workshop in the wonderful space at the can factory in brooklyn. we will focus on sound's ability to define/describe space, and on our ability to resonate, alter, or create space by using sound.

revenant:sound is a project that focuses on improvised sonic activities in site specific locations. voices are given to these spaces by producing sound using only objects found in-situ and the space itself. participants will focus on a development of attentive listening and the ability to successfully participate in group explorations, while learning to find sonic potentials in everyday materials. revenant derives its name from a concept of spatial memory, or, more specifically, from the long-term gestural memory of space; the ability of a location to retain an imprint or trace of activity or energy that has been present therein.

participants are asked to bring one (non-musical) object from their living space, whose sonic potentials we will explore as a group.
please book a place in advance as spaces are limited.

radialx 08
workshop & performance

a workshop introducing concepts of deep environmental listening through an exploration of our immediate surroundings and a series of sound-hunting forays and subsequent listening sessions. participants will be asked to explore their everyday locations, to capture and present familiar or hidden sonic situations, with a focus on micro and macro-sonic activity. concepts of documentary and abstracted field-recording possibilities will be explored, as well as the parallels to photography inherent in this art form, duly dubbed phonography. work will start with a listening session of exotic and endemic field-recordings, and an exploration of the characteristics of non-musical sound. time permitting, some work will also be begun on compositional possibilities and artistic presentation.

radialx is a radio-art festival which will consist of a series of lectures, discussions, workshops and performances. i will also be participating in the end-or-event sound performance. contact me directly for attendance information.

sound as space/sound as language
workshop & performance, w/ maksims shentelevs & john grzinich

a workshop focusing on sound as transmitter of nonverbal information, whether as a tool for communication or as a description of physical or imaginary space. we will focus on sound's ability to define/describe space, and on our ability to resonate, alter, or create space by using sound. we will also explore animal communication and group activity. a strong focus will be placed on environmental listening, and the development of the ear toward detailed sonic perception. using small acoustic objects and the space itself, we will experiment with methods of group nonverbal sonic communication, with giving our location a voice, and with creating new spaces toward an understanding of sonic scenography. the workshop will open with an extended listening session, after which participants will work through a series of sonic games and be asked to bring objects to use in the later stages.

thew workshop will culminate with a performance in the evening of the 7th. contact me directly for attendance information.

i will be giving a workshop throughout the week entitled 'miles per meal' which will revolve around the concept of foodmiles, or the distance traveled by ingredients between their point of production and our plates. the practical outcome of each day's session will be an evening meal for the workshop participants, and we will alternate between meals produced with only local ingredients and more unusual recipes from around the world. somewhere between cooking lessons and social politics. i will also participate in the final weekend's sound event.

“An Evening of Experimental Music” A program of visceral electronic music, five performances culminating with a rare solo set of ecstatic ur-drone and deep sunset epiphany by Brendan Murray. Also, the return Boston performance (he made his Boston debut at First Night in 2003) by Birchville Cat Motel, a.k.a. Campbell Kneale from New Zealand, whose soulful noise takes in elements of classic minimalism (think Eliane Radigue and Tony Conrad) and heavy metal thunder (think Iron Maiden and Slayer). Other performances will be the world premiere digital duel of Frans de Waard (aka Kapotte Muziek, from the Netherlands) & local favorite Keith Fullerton Whitman ; a thick cake of analog fog by the trio of Skeletons Out (Jay Sullivan & Howard Stelzer on turntable & tapes, respectively) with Richard Francis (aka Eso Steel, from New Zealand); and some seriously heavy sleep by Murmer (formerly of New England, currently of actual England). Curated by Howard Stelzer, proprietor of the Intransitive Recordings label, which is world famous depending on who you ask.

moks summer international art symposium
PostsovkhoZ6 Inimloomaed / Human Zoo

"PostsovkhoZ started as open forum to question the social, cultural and economic issues facing rural life in post-soviet Estonia. PostsovkhoZ has developed into a multi-purpose, cross-discipline event for creative interventions in a context-specific location. This year's theme: Human Zoo.

keywords: captivity, borders, observation, surveillance, domestication, animal behavior, instinct, security, connectedness, artificial and natural environments

This year MoKS will take a rather ironic approach to its summer art symposium with the theme "Human Zoo." As for the local residents it sometimes seems as if the village becomes "occupied" by artists in early August during PostsovkhoZ when foreigners from around the world come to explore and create in Mooste. And for visiting artists, there is the unique feeling of being "set free" to wander and work among the people and places of the village. The symposium arrangement of the observer and the observed is a subjective one depending on the position you view it from. In the cases of active collaborations between inhabitants and visitors, the borders appear then often dissolve through whatever communication processes may be used. Yet, in many cases beyond the quiet village life, barriers for people are also constructed by physical, psychological and technological means. Our perception of these conditions is often guided by our awareness of their existence." - from the moks website

for postsovkhoz6 I will be creating a new sound installation entitled gate:

building on my experience at pz5, and on my theatrical background, this year's theme of 'the human zoo' provides a perfect opportunity to explore the ideas of voyeurism and the understanding of human behaviour from within the framework of the participatory/performative sound installation/experience. from the start i must credit a strong influence on my (continuing) development of this idea by the british performance group rotozaza, whose explorations into the use of instructional sound within a stage presentation have left quite an impression on me (see www.rotozaza.co.uk). this structure also enables me to create a piece more clearly tied to the environment of moks and mooste than last year's ternal, which, while moks' basement setting was the perfect aesthetic location for the piece, was an independent creation that could theoretically exist elsewhere. so, in a nutshell...

this piece consists of two interrelated elements: the visual experience of it's physical location/activity, and the aural experience of it's central sonic skeleton. these elements are interrelated, but not intertwined, in that they are experienced separately. a defined space (a figurative, if not a literal, 'cage') exists in a chosen location, perhaps delineated by a small ground cover, or four objects creating corners, or literal bars. at any one time, two participants may enter this space. when in the space they are each presented with two objects: a blindfold, and a pair of headphones. whether they are actively provided these objects by myself or some other assistant, or whether these objects are simply present within the space to be used or ignored, remains to be seen. but they will preferably be provided in such a way that they are interdependent - that the headphones may not be worn without the blindfold and vice versa.

once wearing blindfold and headphones, the participants find themselves in another world. they find themselves in a blind soundscape constructed of sounds from the surrounding environments of moks and mooste. the sounds are recorded binaurally, creating as real an experience for the listener as possible. the created soundscape, however, is imaginary - this is not a simple field recording of a stroll around the village, but a figurative recreation of the sonic possibilities of our literal location - as in a dream. but within this soundscape there is also the creation of a more literal relationship: having entered this caged space, the participants are confronted by their captor. an occasional voice arrives to guide the participant through their experience, providing them with some direction and order. these directions relate to the space of the cage, to the inflicted blindness, and to the (possible) presence of another participant. they are simple instructions (sit, kneel, yawn, reach for the hand of your partner) that are there to be followed or ignored.

so within this cage we have two participants, ie two soundscapes. these soundscapes are individual and very different. however, they are linked by the captor's voice - directions being given bring about interaction and/or conflict, and will most likely lead two participants to presume that they are occupying the same world. only afterwards will they find out (or not) that in fact their universes inside the cage were completely different.

so we have a cage and it's residents - we also, of course, have the visitors, who may have been, or will soon become, residents of the cage themselves. from outside the cage we hear nothing of the soundscape, we can only observe, perhaps undetected, the inexplicable behaviour of the blind participants, reacting and interacting based on the instructions they are receiving. from outside we cannot understand, but of course desire an understanding, of those that appear so close but remain at such a distance.

the soundscapes and the cage can be entered of left at any time by a participant - there is no beginning or end, and the cage's bars do not hold...

Tone Debris

An evening focussing on possible meeting points between melody and noise, or tone and its fragmented neighbour. ka describe themselves as 'acoustic in every electronic bit' (with guitar, electronics and drums). Lgamble's microscopic laptop abstractions celebrate the fractured while murmer does a melding of field recordings with the tonal playing of a bowed metal chime (www.murmerings.com). DJs Tom Scott and Space Commander Travis move from obscure film soundtracks all the way to possible Spoken Word.

moks summer international art symposium
PostsovkhoZ5 Public/Private

"PostsovkhoZ started as open forum to question the social, cultural and economic issues facing rural life in post-soviet Estonia. PostsovkhoZ has developed into a multi-purpose, cross-discipline event for creative interventions in a context-specific location. PostsovkhoZ encourages both the exchange of ideas and the realization of short term artistic projects within a 10 day event. PostsovkhoZ is hosted by MoKS, an NGO cultural organization dedicated to local and international cooperation in the fields of arts, social and environmental research in Mooste, Estonia (pop. 520 people, 48km SE of Tartu).

This years theme is Public / Private:  << space, information, ownership, land, law, access, funding, networks, institutions, healthcare, education, records, debates, public domains, private interests >>" - from the moks website

I will be creating a new sound installation entitled ternal, featuring the work of british potter sarah hall.  a brief description of the setup:

ternal seeks to draw attention to the intricacies and interactive relationships of private/public, internal/external, personal/common space and experience.

in the center of a defined space (indoor? outdoor?) is a dimly glowing tent. at 4 compass points at the extremities of the space are 4 resonant containers (bottles, bowls, tubes…), each containing a small microphone. somewhere in the space there is also a pair of speakers.

inside the tent (which provides the only light) is a warm and comfortable arrangement of cushions, blankets and objects, inviting a curious participant in. there is a small tray/table/platform containing an array of small found objects (rocks/leaves/metal). there is also a pair of headphones.

a participant in the space outside the tent will see the space lit by the light from within. the participant will also, if there is another participant inside the tent, hear the sounds being created by the found objects, which are captured and amplified into the space through the speakers.

a participant inside the tent will be invited to manipulate the objects before them, and to put on the headphones, through which they can hear the ambient sound of the larger space resonating in the 4 containers at the compass points (voices, footsteps, perhaps there are leaves on the floor?). sounds they themselves are creating with the objects may also be captured by these containers to find their way back into the tent.

rather than being a self-sufficient sound installation, ternal is a type of self-generating performance that requires a curious participant. without one, nothing happens…
