13.12.02

This week we presented another live project, Dance For Radio, a dance piece choreographed specially fro Framework by Lisa Alexander and performed by Lisa and Nicola Herd.  This short piece was recorded in several different environments by several different methods, a selection of which were presented prior to a live performance of the piece in the Resonance FM studio.  More details of the individual recordings below.  We're very curious to hear what people thought of this piece; if you heard it, please let us know!

We also, of course, had some great new music to present: perhaps my favorite raw field recording submission yet, by Simon Keep, some domestic composition by The Beige Channel, and a glorious new double cd by Gen Ken Montgomery.  This will be the last playlist this year, as I will be away until mid January, but the show will go on with Joel at the helm, and I'll catch you up on the artist info when I return.

*recorded with binaural microphones in clissold park, stoke newington , in the mud

*recorded with binaural microphones from the basement of the shakespeare pub, stoke newington ; the dance was performed in the bar above

Thanks to everyone in London who came down to Hoxton Hall last week for the show, and to all of you who were able to listen in to our Resonance performance online.  It's been a busy couple of weeks, but things are settling back down now.  Three weeks ago we featured material by Jonathan and Michael as well as Joel and me (murmer) in preparation for the gigs, and the new phonography.org composers compilations (featuring field recordings used in composition, as opposed to the raw material that has been phonography.org's concentration so far).  This past week we looked at the French label Sonoris, as well as some work by Generator Sound's Gen Ken Montgomery.

*Bernad Parmegiani /  (excerpts)  /  De natura sonorum /  Ina-GRM

Classic 1975 recording of mostly quiet, resonating electronic sounds. "With the music of Bernard Parmegiani something in us is freed and comes out of passivity. This thing, which I know now was blocked without my knowing where, is the buzzing and Time within the flesh -- a humming of millions of closed mouths between the cells. What is the murmur made up of? The body develops a tongue in listening to this music, and there is within it great movement of the sound material... it is music that makes the organic breathe, lifts it up and stretches it... music that takes the ear 'beyond' work, but touching the inner side." -- Bernard Noel.

*Nuuk  /  live on Framework

Stephen Musgrave has been heavily involved with San Fransisco's minimal electronic scene for several years, and is part of the orangeAge organisation.  On loan to us here in London for several months, he has started working with field recording, and presents some recent work live with us on the eve of his return to the US of A.

One more thing:  our next show, October 4th, features a live performance by San Francisco's Nuuk, and, if all goes well, Michael Northam will be making an appearance in the next few weeks as well.

We welcomed Joel back from his journeys this week, having returned to us with stacks of great material, which we will slowly be getting through over the next several shows.  Our featured location recordings (twixt tracks and under our babbling) this week were by the Quiet American; a selection of field recordings entitled 'source recordings no. 89: annapurna region, nepal .'  As always, I highly recommend checking out his work, as well as his very informative website (www.quietamerican.org).

26.07.02

We aired slightly later this show, from 9:30 to 10:30pm GMT; I hope this didn't cause confusion for anyone trying to listen in (it was a surprise for us as well...).  This coming week we're back to our normal broadcast time.

For this show I finally started to delve in to the material that you've been sending in - some really great stuff!  I also played some of my own field recordings between tracks, underneath the commentary: the Brooklyn Bridge, a small marina in Massachusetts, crickets from the bedroom window in my mother's house...  We finished the show with a wonderful live set from Sawako; look out for her 2 upcoming releases (on aesova and throat).  This Friday I welcome Joel's return to the show; he's been away on tour but has now returned to us.  No live performance this week, but in the works for the next couple months are possible live appearances by Rosy Parlane and Mattin, Nuuk, and others...

I invited Jonathan Coleclough (whose name I was pleased to discover I've been pronouncing correctly all these years: rhymes with 'now' and not with 'cough') to join me this week and to bring along some selections of his own to play before the live set.  He then played a new piece, Halant, live, followed by a recording of a live duo with Aube earlier this year, and finished off with a live improvised duo with myself.  This Friday will feature a live performance by Japanese artist Sawako in the 2nd half of the show - hope you can tune in!

Joel was alone for this, our 2nd broadcast, and did a mighty fine job with our new shorter (unfortunately) 1 hour slot.  The next show, this Friday eve, features a selection of compositions and field recordings chosen by Jonathan Coleclough, followed by a solo live set, as well as a short live duo w/ the aforementioned and myself (murmer).  Should be a wonderful show!  Our next broadcast, on the 26th, will feature a live set by Japanese artist sawako, whose work Joel played during the show listed here...
