"oil dripping from big tanks in the central heating room of a big touristical complex, crackling from a malfunctioning electret condenser microphone, overtone singing recorded in a subterranean tunnel grating access to a parking lot at night, drones and sines, bells and chimes in the wind, a plane passing far away over our heads at night"

thanks to all of you who came down to conway hall on friday, making advent-garde an enormous success!  initial estimates are that we had upwards of 1000 people come to show their support for resonance!  two rooms of music were packed, the bar was drunk dry and sales of the resonancefm benefit cds went well.  nonetheless, i do have some copies of the framework 2003 cd left and available (i'm asking for a recommended donation of £10, post-paid).  i will be dealing with them upon my return from a trip home to the states for the holidays (will be back on new year's eve) - if you'd like to put your name down for a copy drop me a note and i'll add you to my list.  here's the playlist for the disc:

the disc is packed in a plastic sleeve with color booklet - i can also send you a .jpeg of a traycard design that didn't end up getting printed (in case you want to print it out yourselves and transfer the whole package to a jewel case).

anyway, the show.  i prerecorded this edition friday morning so i could be at conway hall; i also prerecorded the next one (on the 26th) as i will still be away.  so perhaps a slightly early morning feel to both of them.  this edition featured a mix of works from two new releases by mnortham, several tracks from a great cd by jason kahn, and a few more revisits, this time to the heatworks cd from a few months back, and another one of steve peters' sight specifics pieces.  the 26th's edition is a focus on italy 's s'agita recordings - a full hour of recent releases on this small cdr label, as well as some older works from the pseudonym of the label's founders, logoplasm.  i'll send out a full playlist for that show after new year.

a couple of new releases from bernhard guenter's trente oiseaux label this week, and a return visit from several of our favorites of recent history: quiet american, rob mullender and janek schaefer.  we also featured material from two fellow resonance fm program makers, viv corringham and john wynne, and polish artist pawel grabowski, who impressed us last week with his live set at the red rose club.

now hopefully none of you will be tuning in to our next show - or none of you here in london , at least - as it is on the same night as advent-garde, resonance fm's free holiday benefit concert at conway hall.  framework will air as normal, but it will be a prerecorded edition (it will be recorded that morning), as i, along with all good londoners, will be at the event.  i have been asked to provide 'interval soundscapes,' which will be untreated field recording collages, regularly throughout the evening, so if you like your phonography come down and show your support!  further details at the end of this mail.

31.10.03

two particularly interesting projects this edition, amongst plenty of other great sounds and a great nyc intro by gen ken montgomery .  the first is a 3" disc of sounds recorded by rachel thompson and jonathan zorn as part of a project called 50 sound stories + 466 decibel readings.  the final product is a 2-sided map of the twin cities - st paul and minneapolis, minnesota - one side of which locates 50 selected favorite local sounds (20 if which make up the cd) and tells their stories (and even suggests a number of potential 'soundwalks'), and the other side of which maps the cities in terms of their relative decibel readings taken throughout a grid of their geographies.  the map is part of a series of 'knowledge maps' commissioned by the university of minnesota design institute as part of its twin cities design celebration 2003.  a fantastic project, great package, and really nice sounds to boot!

the second project we featured was one of a series of radio-specific pieces by american sound artist steve peters (whose book and cd here-ings we featured earlier this year) called sight specifics, in which he invites people to 'choose a site they'd like to visit and have them go their and record themselves describing that place, speaking in any style of language they choose.  i usually then go there at another time to make my own field recordings, which may or may not be electronically processed.  then i combine those sounds with their edited speaking to make an audio translation of the visual and emotional experience of that place as filtered through the perception of the participants.'

one more thing:  it has come to my attention that one or two packages sent to me over the past few months have disappeared in the post (a problem undoubtedly exacerbated by the current postal strikes here in the uk ).  i am very careful to always contact people who have taken the effort to send something in, even if i can't use the material or won't be able to fit it into a show for quite some time, just to let them know their package has arrived safely.  if you've sent something and haven't heard from me, please don't think it's been chucked in some pile in the corner and will never be heard of again, but contact me and let me know, and i can start hassling local post offices.  things usually don't completely disappear without a trace, but we do get a lot of mail and some things do go missing...

gen ken montgomery   /  framework intro

entitled 'sounds of transportation, sound as transportation,' recorded july 19th at 29th st and west side highway, nyc - i quote: 'cars, planes, helicopters, boats, trucks, bikes, roller blades, joggers, all within 2 ears!'

roel meelkop  /  garasu  /  2 (kyoku)  /  staalplaat

eloise butler wildflower garden  /  20 field recordings  /  -

these selections make the finale of this piece - they, like the whole cd, are worked together into one long shifting tour of the twin cities

colin potter & phil mouldycliff  /  -  /  shellfish in kettleblack  /  icr

untitled 2nd track of drones from what sounds like electronic & radio interference

marcelo radulovich  /  section 2  /  2 brains  /  accretions

a 2 cd release, one disc being a mix of instrumentation, song-writing, samples and field recordings, the other (from which this piece is taken), being untreated (but nicely composed) field recording collages

ward weis  /  between two worlds  /  zeige deine wunde  /  -

19.09.03

first off, i'm excited to announce that framework has been included in resonance fm's morning repeat schedule.  Between 6am and 12 noon, the loop of archive material that plays during our off-air time (1 am until noon the following day) will be replaced with a regular schedule of repeated material from the previous week's broadcasts.  hence each edition of framework will be rebroadcast at 11am on the wednesday following live airing, hopefully giving those of you in a less convenient time zone, for instance, the chance to listen in.  i will also try to get playlists done and out before the repeat, so that if you see something interesting, or some of your own material broadcast, you'll still have a chance to catch the show.  happy listening!

this week we began with an intro featuring my very own other mother annette lissauer (thanks annette!), as well as a few tracks from a compilation on vienna's transacoustic research label, and one track from a fantastic 3" cd of electro-magnetic subway recordings by rob mullender.  we then moved on to our guests' proposition, another offering from french sound artist jean-luc guionnet (groundfault, afflux, etc), this time in collaboration with bertrand denzler, improviser and co-member of their band hubbub.  on his previous visit, jean-luc covered the resonance studio in a web of contact mics, and performed a live mix of local sounds and unheard recordings made on his train voyage to the uk; this time he and bertrand proposed a different sort of project:  at 10am on the morning of the broadcast the artists and their equipment arrived in abney park cemetery, stoke newington, and set up a pair of stereo mics inside the tower of the ruined chapel in the middle.  a 34 minute recording was made of the cemetery's ambiance amplified by the strange acoustics of this tower, punctuated by a series of improvised 'sound events' produced from varying distances and with various objects by jean-luc and bertrand.  this recording was then broadcast in the evening, unheard, creating a very curious and mysterious soundscape...

annette lissauer  /  framework intro

rob mullender  /  moscow   /  metro magnetics  /  staalplaat

vegetable orchestra  /  leeks  /  hearings (compilation)  /  transacoustic research

okay, maybe not exactly a field recording, but this groups vegetable instrument construction is pretty fascinating nonetheless!

das fax mattinger & gerald rossbacher  /  hearing 15  /  hearings (compilation)  /  transacoustic research

a special 2 1/2 hour edition this week, featuring live performances by tore honore boe, michael duch, their duo tacet ncv, and murmer.  sounds produced by acoustic laptops, double bass, and live and prerecorded phonography.  many thanks to everyone who tuned in, and to those who made it down to one of our gigs in the following week.  the live sessions took place from 7:00 to 8:30 , followed by an hour of our regular format featuring...

several long pieces and quite a lot of mixing: osso exotico with big city orchestra, daniel menche with janek schaeffer.  hopefully, some nice contrasts.   i forgot to mention last time that on the 5th of september, last friday, which would have been our regular slot, we took a week off to make way for resonance's live broadcast of the london musician collective's 12th annual festival - sorry if you were looking for us and couldn't find us.  our next edition will feature another visit from french artist jean-luc guionnet, this time joined by collaborator bertrand denzler.

i am virtually almost entirely and completely out of introductions, people!  if you'd be interested in recording an intro for an edition of framework, now's the time!  see the details below...

we have a special edition of framework coming up this friday, incorporating the clearspot slot directly before ours to end up with a 2 and 1/2 hour framework special!  this is in honour of a visit by norwegian artists tore honore boe and michael duch, performing both solo and in their duo as tacet ncv.  i will join them for a collaborative set with my own project, murmer, as well.  we will use the first 1 and 1/2 hours for the live performances, keeping the usual framework slot in it's more traditional record-spinning format, with the added benefit of tore and michael as guest djs.  this is the first of four events featuring tore and michael, who will also be playing at sound 323, the bonnington centre and hat on wall - full details below!

august 8th's edition was granted an extra 1/2 hour by the programming gods, which allowed us an extended mix of some new work by jonathan coleclough with some rereleased work by asmus tietchens.  this followed new work (and an intro) by chris watson, some amazing material on the antiopic label, and a sample of illusion of safety's 20th anniversary release on new london label ossos nossos.

25.07.03

this edition was held together with a web of vlf (very low frequency) recordings from the second 'collection of earth's mysterious natural vlf radio phenomena' released by stephen p. mcgreevy.  these are the stunning documents of earth's natural radio frequencies captured by mcgreevy's custom-built receivers - amazingly organic whistles, hums, crackles, rhythms, tones and drones.  amongst this web were interweaved sounds by german composer and radio artist michael ruesenberg, steve roden, brandon labelle, and more, all set off with a framework intro recorded for us by one of our current favorite field recordists, toby paddock.

coming up in a few weeks time framework will be hosting a special live appearance by norwegian musicians tore honore boe and michael duch, both solo and in their duo incarnation as tacet ncv (and performing some live experiments with yours truly as well).  this will take place during the clearspot slot ( 7:00-8:30pm ) immediately preceding our usual slot on august 22nd, hence a special 2 1/2 hour framework!  tore and michael will also be playing several gigs in london in the few days following their radio appearance - at sound 323, the bonnington centre and the hat on wall gallery (where i will join them as well); i will send those dates and details soon.

finally, thanks to all of you who came down to the first annual london.placard headphone festival - it was a greater success than any of us could have imagined, and we will definitely be doing it again!

this friday's edition will feature new work by jonathan coleclough, chris watson, osso exotico and more; hope you can tune in!

we spent most of this edition focused on the two new compilations from phonography.org, with a good 40-or-so minute mix of sounds from the two discs (the playlist order below is therefore the order in which the tracks were begun).  if you don't know, phonography.org is a discussion list and resource site (http://www.phonography.org) dedicated to the art of field recording that has now released 7 compilations:  5 (including these two) which feature exclusively untreated field recordings, and two which feature composition using field recordings.  if you trust my bias, these are all highly recommended, do check them out!

we also featured an untreated recording by meri von kleinsmid, some new work by toyisha tsunoda, as well as work by phil niblock, mendietan and an intro recorded by omnid.  i've just come back from 2 weeks in germany with stacks of new sounds, so we'll start working through those this friday.  and there's one last plug for a performance i'm involved with at hoxton hall (here in london ) this week; if you're in town, please come down!  and i'm still looking for new intro submissions, details below...

13.06.03

we began this edition, after an intro recorded by mike shannon, with a mix of tracks from several recent releases on the u.s. label groundfault: eric cordier, christian renou (previously known as brume), vertonen (a project by blake edwards, who runs the c.i.p. record label, whose crawl unit release we featured last time) and a collaborative cd between tidal, chaos as shelter and igor krutogolov; some very complimentary sounds on these releases!  we then moved on to quite a mix of sounds, featuring sarah peebles, a recent steve roden release and an older francisco lopez piece.  we gave away a cd as well:  steve and francisco's collaborative release on the french label fario, le chemin du paradis, which we featured a while back, was snapped up by harold schellinx, listening from vincennes in france .  congrats!  giving stuff away is something we're going to try to do more regularly from now on, so listen in if you can!

our next edition will feature the long-awaited next installments in the phonography.org compilation series, along with some new work by toyisha tsunoda and meri von kleinsmid.  i'm also running low on intros, so if you've been considering recording one but haven't got round to it, now's the time!  see below for instructions (and see below that for a plug for a show i'll be doing in london in a few weeks time.  if you can come down please say hello!).

an intro from the gentleman at erewhon records this week, followed by an excerpt from a new favorite work of mine: 'air, surface and magnetic vibrations' by toby paddock.  this week also featured work by monique jean, dallas simpson and old favorite crawl unit (now recording under his own name, joe colley).  patrick and frederic at erewhon had this to say about their intro submission:

'The recording took place on March 12 in Liege, during a manifestation called "Villes en marche pour une reconquete economique" - Cities marching for an economic recovery (I know you read and speak French, but I definitely have to practice my English - you can write to me in French if you want !).  All the major economic actors, public and private, from Liege and its region, were invited to demonstrate together, as a strong symbol of solidarity with the steelworkers of Cockerill, taken over by the (European) Arcelor group, whose directors, turning back from previous agreements, had decided to stop an important part of the steel-manufacturing process, directly menacing the jobs of thousands of people.  There were 50.000 people marching in the streets on that very special day ( Liege has a population of 500.000 people including the outskirts).  It may be interesting to remember that Liege was the first region to become industrialized on the continent, at the very beginning of the 19th century, thanks to an Englishman, John Cockerill, who founded and gave his name to a company.  Today, the unemployment rate of the city of Liege is not so far from reaching 20% of the active population...

'What you hear seems, however, very festive !  We made a few recordings and kept this one, on which you can hear a fanfare playing what could be called the "national" hymn of
Liege , our famous "valeureux Liegeois".  Luckily, you don't hear the lyrics ! But if you insist, you could have me sing it and send you a tape...  It's not more intelligent than any other hymn, but obviously that special occasion gave it some poignant, ironic intensity: "Valeureux Liegeois / Fidele ` ma voix / Vole ` la victoire ! / Et la liberte de notre cite / Te couvrira de gloire !". Liege is well known for its particular sense of pride and independence, due to centuries of actual independence from its surrounding states - it was a principality governed by a Prince-Bishop.  The fanfare was followed by a bagpiper - a very strange, unintentional (of course) combination...'

they also had this to say about their own relation, as a label, to belgium and this demonstration:

'I have to say that, as erewhon, we have a special, sort of love & hate relationship with Liege , and Belgium in general - but particularly with Liege .  It is clear that our name reflects this situation - erewhon / nowhere, as if Liege could be anyplace, the very picture of irrelevance.  This recording makes it obvious, at least for me: a high tension between decline and pride - visible signs of social, economic, cultural decadence (so very few signs of recovery, alas !), more or less covered by relics of a brilliant past, and a feeling of insularity which has simply become unbearable to us.  Erewhon has nothing to do with that, but we have to acknowledge the fact that it would have been completely different had we founded it anywhere but in Liege .'

thanks to both patrick and frederic for providing this very insightful information.

a framework intro from slavek kwi (aka artificial memory trace) this week, then work by j. frede, new zealand's cmr label, and a mix of two tracks from the twin releases on erewhon and intransitive by seth nehil/jgrzinich.  we featured the most mysterious submission framework has had to date as well: a hand painted cdr that appears to be by someone called squirrel manoeuvers, no contact info, no note, no further details.  in fact 'no further details' is exactly what it says on the disc.  it also says, 'please pass on to someone else when you have finished listening,' so, in keeping with the artist's wishes, the first person to send me an address gets it...

our next edition will feature the work of toby paddock, dallas simpson and crawl unit, as well as an introduction recorded by the gentleman at erewhon.  hope you can tune in!

probably my favorite framework introduction yet began this edition, recorded here in london by melanie clifford and rob grant on scaffolding outside their window with a live mix of contact and condenser microphones.  beautiful!  we then delved back into the massive body of work produced by ward weis, before moving on to some recent works by slavek kwi, aka artificial memory trace.

however, the real highlight was a live in studio performance by jean-luc guionnet: composer, improviser, and collaborator with the likes of eric cordier and eric la casa, and their project afflux.  jean-luc performed a live improvised set of found sounds: some prerecorded (but unheard) sounds from his eurostar ride that morning, the others live on location, from a condenser mic out the window, to an array of contact mics spread across the studio and taped to clocks, amps, ventilators...  definitely amongst framework's most exciting moments.

18.04.03

we began this edition with an intro recorded by chris watson, our favorite bbc sound recordist and ex-member of cabaret voltaire and the hafler trio.  if you haven't heard his two releases on touch, we highly recommend them.  you could also go and see him this thursday at the ica's cut and splice event, alongside francisco lopez (future framework appearance in the works) and gregg wagstaff.

over the next several editions we will be exploring some sounds by belgian composer ward weis, who has recently sent us an amazing amount of amazing material.  we began those explorations this week with his piece the tug, and then moved into several recent releases from u.s. label edition...  we finished off with a new 3" cd from erewhon by lionel marchetti, riss (l'avalanche).

this friday we will begin by looking at some more work by weis, as well as his collaborator and friend slavek kwi (artificial memory trace).  we will then be lucky enough to have french composer jean-luc guionnet (check out his releases on groundfault and a bruit secret, as well as his collaborations with eric cordier and afflux) performing live in the studio.  you could also go and see his band hubbub playing saturday night at conway hall in holborn.  this looks to be a very busy weekend...

i returned from my month away yesterday to find an enormour pile of sound waiting - lots of great material and several intro submission to easily fill the next several shows!  we'll begin wading through them this friday.  also coming up are live appearances and/or special framework projects with jean-luc guionnet, francisco lopez and drouin/olsen.

for this show (sneakily prerecorded before i left town) we settled into some longer pieces after a lofi intro recorded in seattle by komafuzz.  we heard a few tracks from a cd i've been trying to get to for a long time, brandon labelle's shadow of a shadow, and also heard two pieces from absurd records' research center for the definition of happiness series (one from toy bizarre and the other from the upcoming cd by my own project, murmer).

For those that don't already know, this Friday, Valentine's Day, is I Love Resonance Day.  We have been granted our license extension, the catch being the station is now desperately in need of funds to be able to continue.  I Love Resonance Day will feature special programming and the opportunity to show your support.  There will be fundraising on the day, along with a benefit auction running from the ResonanceFM website.  Please show your support in any way possible, even if it's just to drop us a note.  Recordable feedback from our listeners is what made the extension possible in the first place!  I have included the most recent ResFM Newsletter at the end of this playlist (you can receive the newsletter by joining the ResonanceFM discussion list: resonancefm-subscribe@yahoogroups.com).  Thanks, now on to the show!

This edition of Framework featured a project by US artist Steve Peters entitled Here-ings.  Having been invited to create a site-specific work for The Land, a forty acre natural site in New Mexico , Peters took 24 hours of field recordings - one during each hour of the day, at a different location of the site, on various days spanning one year.  The sounds were then spliced together, 3 minutes per hour, in a sonic representation, not only of a day in The Land, but a year.  Peters then wrote 24 'songs,' poetic transcriptions of each 3 minute piece, which were carved in to 24 stone benches and installed permanently at the original recording location.  Here-ings comprises these recordings and a book with writings on the project, the 'songs' themselves, and a detailed breakdown of the sounds in each track.

We also had the opportunity tonight to catch up on several recordings that have been waiting too long in the 'to play' pile - Dale Lloyd, Jon Tulchin, Michael Prime - as well as to play some new submissions - Anders Ostberg, Jason Lescalleet and a taster from the long-awaited Field Recordings and Manipulations compilation (more from that one next time).

24.01.03

After a long hiatus (for the playlists only; the show, of course, has continued as usual), welcome to the first framework playlist of 2003.  A few changes for framework; we bid a fond farewell to Joel, my co-host, a few weeks ago, who has headed back to his Australian homeland.  We're sure we'll run into him again sometime.  And we're counting on him to supply us with some great long-distance material for the show (you listening, Joel?).  The next few months should be action packed, with a few guest hosts, some more live on air events, and the continuing framework concert series.

Also, there are two more playlists to come: 27.12.02 and 10.01.03.  Joel hosted these two shows on his own while I was off gallivanting on the continent; I've got recordings, but haven't compiled the info yet.  They featured an interview with fallt's Chris Murphy on the Invisible Cities project, a live performance by mnortham, newly returned from a few months in Malta, and even a second airing in as many shows of one of our favorite pieces, Steve Roden's The Radio (slight miscommunication twixt cohosts, but worth two listens anyhow).
