23.12.05

my apologies for the lateness of this playlist - the holiday season has been busy with voyages and visitors, but happily through now to 2006 we begin anew, back to our regularly scheduled programming, as they say.  i hope you enjoyed our special guest curator on 16.12 - it was a pleasure to have the chance to hear michael northam's personal retrospective on his 2005.  and this, our next show on 23.12, was to be our last program of the year, as 30.12 was set aside to give our studio engineers a much deserved break.

we ended 2005 on a more pensive note, with a very belated nod to the great john watermann, the australian visual and sonic artist who passed away in 2002.  our retrospective was inspired by the appearance of the cd epitaph for john, on the dutch korm plastics label - a posthumous collaborative dedication curated by frans de waard and featuring a collection of sound artists and friends who had been influenced by or worked with john over the years.  the basis for the work was an unfinished collaboration between frans and john, featuring a collection of john's raw field recordings from toowong cemetary.  for their contributions to the project, these sounds were given to asmus tietchens, rlw, and merzbow, and their material was in turn used as the basis for frans' own contribution from his freiband project.  for our show i accompanied this material with the sounds that defined john's work for me personally over the years - by no means a comprehensive collection, but the highlights for me from the few cds i managed to find in a time before the proliferation of the internet, either from his own smal nightshift records label, or from other small pioneering record labels such as nd, stille andacht and raum 312.  these labels either no longer exist or have no discenable internet presence, hence my lack of contact information for them, but you can find more infomation on the korm plastics label here: http://www.kormplastics.nl, or more information on john watermann here: http://aliasfrequencies.org/watermann.

lastly, i will reprint here the obituary, written by frans de waard, which originally appeared in the online review digest vital weekly on 03.04.02:

John Watermann 19.2.1935 - 2.4.2002

It's with great sadness that we have to announce the death of John Watermann.  He died @ 5:50pm Brisbane time, 2.4.2002, Ward 4B Royal Brisbane Hospital.  He died from infection associated with myeloma.

John Watermann was one of the truly underground sound and visual artists.  In the late eighties his name surfaced out of nowhere, when a double CD was released by the Walter Ulbricht label in Germany.

Starting out in Berlin, Germany, where he was born, as a filmmaker and photographer, he found out that he needed soundtracks for his films.  He started composing music in the mid-sixties, then moved to Australia in the early seventies.  Although he was collecting sound equipment, his first releases did not surface until the late eighties.  In the nineties, his music was released on cds by ND, Dark Vinyl, Walter Ulbricht and Raum 312.  He also recorded a collaborative work with Merzbow.  One of his last big projects was a CD-Rom titled "A Rose Is A Rose," which he released himself and which features both his visual work and his music.  Much of Watermann's work incorporated field recordings, which were heavily treated by electronics, resulting in highly rhythmic music.  His work also made extensive use of cut-ups.  Although in the later part of the nineties he was less actively involved in producing music (mainly due to his illness), his output will not be forgotten.

In mid-2000 he wrote me that he was terminally ill, but that he would love to do a sound-project with me in the remaining time.  We exchanged environmental recordings and exchanged emails over the practical nature of composing our works.  Only a few weeks ago, he wrote me that he was still working on it, despite all the treatments he was getting.  In exchanging these emails he came forward as a very practical person, with clear ideas as to what he wanted.  I will continue to work my part of this work in order to keep his memory alive.

a long list of tracks for this edition as we sampled a large chunk of the recent 2cd compilation put out by sirr-ecords, untitled songs, tied to the structural creation of karlheinz stockhausen's seminal piece, gesang der jünglinge.  from the liner notes: 'the works on this cd are not plain homage, nor are they sampled from the original.  they are rather a survey of the current state of electronic/electroacoustic that exists half outside the academic music life.'  most feature the common elements of voice manipulation and the sounds of interior spaces - we sampled works from many framework regulars, as well as a few new names.

we also heard the first of some new works by the composer emmanuel mieville, some tonal creations from tetsu inoue, new works by ubeboet, james wyness and michael trommer, and a framework introduction recorded for us by cedric peyronnet (aka toy.bizarre).

this weeks commentary was recording in the abney park cemetery in stoke newington, north london, on what turned out to be a particularly active friday afternoon.  baby buggies, tree pruning, nearby building work, and a very active group of winter birds provided the backdrop for my usual set on information - this is a method i plan to be using more often in future, to remove the show entirely from the studio, and place framework where it should be: in the field.

25.11.05

having received several submissions of vocal and/or narrative work over the part few months, we embarked on our second edition of vocal field recordings this week (you may remember our first, earlier this year, inspired by tim coster's vocal and field compilation), loosely structured around joseph young's narrative, and quite theatrical, piece, the family album.  his field recordings take on a more literal role than we're used to here, while playing an active, not an illustrative, role in these memoirs.  we also heard several voices (as well as several voiceless recordings) in the work dan crall, including the amazingly emotive opening tale from a lost soul who has just shot his horse.  the latest installment of viv corringham's shadow-walks, these undertaken on the irish island of cobh, also made an appearance - viv's shadow walks are sonic figurative reconstructions of her subjects favorite walks, constructed from sounds and objects found along the journey.  voiceless respite was found along our way through new works by jason kahn and lawrence english, and by a somehow narrative but wordless piece by canadian composer eldad tsabury which in constructed from late night sounds of montreal streets processed and composed to represent the soundscape as heard from inside the belly of a drunkard asleep on a bench nearby.

another event coming up of possible interest to framework listeners - if you'll forgive the personal plug (or even if you won't): i will be playing a live set at mark schreiber's upcoming tone debris event at the whitechapel gallery here in london - if you make it down please say hello!

Tone Debris

curated by mark schreiber

Thursday, December 8th, 2005

The Whitechapel Gallery, 80-82 Whitechapel High St

Aldgate East Underground Station

free!

An evening focusing on possible meeting points between melody and ‘noise’, or tone and its fragmented neighbour. modified ka describe themselves as “acoustic in every electronic bit” (with guitar, electronics and drums). Lgamble’s microscopic laptop abstractions celebrate the fractured while murmer does a melding of field recordings with the tonal ‘playing’ of a bowed metal chime (www.murmerings.com). DJs Tom Scott and Space Commander Travis move from obscure film soundtracks all the way to possible Spoken Word.

a dense program tonight, with many textural layers from many different directions.  tonight's playlist was dominated by a single package that came through the post; a single label that sent along an array of suitable material.  new zealand's pseudo arcana sent more material than we could cover in one show, including a new release from our well missed framework co-founder joel stern and his collaborator anthony guerra.  also featured is material by edward ruchalski and label boss anthony milton (p.o.w), as well as his collaboration with another label boss, that of celebrate psi phenomena.  we also heard the rest of keith de mendonca's kefalonia recordings, the last of our pile of new releases on nonvisual object (this one by roel meelkop - a disc constructed entirely from material created for sound installations), and finally managed to listen to a cassette submission we've been carrying around for months (causing the rice glued to the case to drop off all over the place) by rinus van alebeek.

any it's time for my occasional plea - i am out of framework introductions, people, so now's the time!  if you've got a moment to record an intro, or if you're planning on sending in other material and would consider recording an intro as well, do it!  the first person to send me an intro mp3 can be guaranteed to have it featured in this friday's show, so on your marks!  guidelines below...

11.11.05

an edition recorded on the road this week - we compiled and constructed this program while visiting les tribardieres in st george les landes, about 50 km outside limoges in the limousin region of france (we were lucky enough to meet local phonographer cedric peyronnet - aka toy.bizarre - during our stay).  so the program was made in the garden and in front of the fire at a large old farmhouse, and the commentary recorded in the woods between les tribardieres and les bussiers.  this is a format we hope to be making more use of in the coming months, given that we plan to spend much of the next year away from home.  and as nice as it is to be in the studio sending the show out live, given the theme of our fair program, it does rather make sense for us to record our commentary out in the field.  so:  not all at once, and not right away, but you should be hearing more of us outside the studio soon...

this program featured some melancholic long droning works from daisuke suzuki, brendan walls and darren tate, along with some sharper more untreated composition from felicily ford (check out her website!) and simon vincent.  we also heard another track from recent italian discovery punck, some environmental sounds from percussionist and instrument builder eric leonardson,  and some more of keith de mendonca's kefalonia recordings.

28.10.05

we framed this week's edition with two sizable samples from lethe's (who you may also know as one half of the location improvising duo kuwayama-kijima) recent double cd on cloud of statics entitled catastrophe point #1 & #2.  lethe makes all his source recordings is a large empty warehouse space, using what sounds like materials found therein and occasional instruments - the recordings paint quite a picture or the space, and his carefully constructed compositions pit close-up tiny sounds with distant thunderous barrelling.  this double cd makes for quite a document.

xan phillips (apparently a prolific podcaster - see his website at http://www.xan.co.uk) recently sent us this recording made outside the oval during the final few minutes of the game that finally won england the ashes - yes, a very topical recording indeed, or at least it would have been if i'd managed to get in on the air even remotely soon after i received it!  but it still makes for a good listen, and provides a nice segue from screaming fans to howling monkeys.  can you tell which are which?

the rest of the edition was an exercise in unexpected blending - douglas quin's amazing untreated recordings from the brazilian rainforest somehow complimented perfectly ben owen's high pitched and staticy fm-transmitter-and-record-player sound constructions, which completed tobias c. van veen and tomas phillips' live minimal jigsaw puzzle, which cleared a path for steve roden's breathy rice-dreams.  all in all a rather enveloping show, i think...

14.10.05

our first session in our new 8-9pm timeslot found us drifting back into slow-build mode, perhaps helped along by an early audition of heribert freidl's new bradycard release, named for a medical term which means 'to have a very slow heart rhythm.'  another impeccable untreated recording (this time very close up with a rabbit) by jeph jerman led us deeper down, into the depths of a live performance at riga's rixc by arturas bumsteinas, during which we encountered a collection of iranian soundscapes recorded by fred inklaar.  recovery began by rejoining one of our contacts from this summer's travels; mpld graced us with his prepared slide projector performances while we were in new york in july, and the source material for a live performance we saw back here in the uk by bill thompson brought our evening to  close.

now, i think i have successfully battered our broadcast time-change into skulls all around, however i did blunder slightly by implying (well, stating...) that our wednesday morning repeat would remain unchanged.  this, in fact, was completely untrue.  framework will continue to be repeated weekly, and these repeats will remain on wednesday morning, however, from this week we take up our new repeat time on 10-11am.  this should make things slightly easier for some of you in certain parts of the world, and slightly more difficult for those of you in the other direction.  so set those alarms!

well, after a few weeks of long tracks and sort playlists, we squeezed quite a few in this time around, largely due to featuring the latest and last of the phonography.org compilation series of untreated field recordings - the website and mailing list continue, but the and/oar produced compilation series (having released 9 (!) compilations in the past few years) has come to an end in its present form.  for more info on what form future phonography.org projects may take keep an eye on the website: http://www.phonography.org.

along with the phonography cd, we also heard sounds from mnortham on the new cloud of statics label; a debut work from theodore holdt, scheduled to be released in the next year on a division of the same cloud of statics label; sounds from ben owen's 2004 sound journal; a collaboative project from san francisco's robert horton; and some more sounds from italy's punck.  this all followed another great framework introduction from one of our regular contributors, adam wimbush.

and again, this announcement - as of our next show, on the 14th of october, we will be taking up our new time slot of 8-9pm - just a half hour earlier than our current slot - so make a note of it!  the wednesday morning repeat slot will remain where it is now at
11am.

23.09.05

after another great traveling intro, we started this week's program with a track from one of my favorite discoveries from this summer's travels - mountains, who i was lucky enough to see perform in brooklyn, combine acoustic guitar and other simple string and drone instruments, in a well-blended duet with series of mostly unmanipulated field recordings.  this live track is a long slowly developing piece, in which the field recordings initially take  the forefront, only to be joined later by a warm, melancholy, repetitive guitar...

this was followed by framework's first ever submission from turkey, by erdem helvacioglu, who, from the looks of his website, unbeknownst to us (or me, anyway), has been working away for quite some time.  from the wilds of an istanbul bazaar we came back up north with some layered droney works from england's phill harding and monos, and continued on that trajectory to find sweden's rsundin, before crashing back down to the heat of a sydney afternoon in the shadow of a fig tree with anthonym.

one announcement to make this week - starting in october, resonancefm's field recording slot (that is, peter cusack's vermillion sounds on the first friday of each month, and framework for the rest of them) will be changing it's hours, just slightly, to the new times of 8-9pm - just a half an hour earlier.  so the first show to be affected will be vermillion sounds on the 7th, and the first edition of framework with our new hours will be on the 14th.  so please make a note of it, we wouldn't want you missing half a show - although, as always, you'll still have a chance to catch the show again in it's wednesday morning repeat slot, which will remain the same.

a last minute special guest in the studio this week; seth nehil, at the beginning of several months of european travels, joined us in the studio to present several parts of a new unreleased work composed from a series of recordings taken in new york city's chinatown.  seth will be in europe for several months and will play several gigs in italy, both solo and with collaborator jgrzinich, so, for our italian listeners, keep your eyes peeled for details!

seth's visit was preceded by another chunk of sounds from our stacks - we've just about waded through everything that sat home waiting for us during our travels, and we will soon begin delving into the material we collected while away.  this week one of jgrzinich's two excellent recent releases shared it's resonances with one of dallas simpson's seascapes, and an extremely collaborative dale lloyd.  his new con-v release, amalgam, features 11 collaborations with 11 different artists in it's 11 different tracks - unfortunately, if the cd i was sent came with info on which tracks are with which collaborator (and it may well have) i no longer have it; nor was i able to find detailed track info online, so i'm afraid i don't know which collaborations i played.  if anyone knows based on the track numbers, please let me know, and i'll credit those artists retrospectively...

lastly, a public service announcement: it has come to our attention that ubuweb is back online - if you don't know about this resource, it is well worth checking out.  have a browse at http://www.ubuweb.com and you'll see what we mean.

well folks, we are finally back in the studio after a long, long time away - i hope you enjoyed your chance to hear so many of the framework:focus programs again during our summer repeat schedule, but i hope as well that you're as pleased as we are to be back with these piles of new material.  this week we started the long task of getting through them - in fact we didn't even quite catch up with what was waiting to be played before we left!  we framed our show with a fantastic new piece (in fact a work-in-progress, he informs us) by chris watson - a stereo mix-down of a quadruple hydrophone array recording the surf in tortuga bay on the galapagos islands.  from within this bay we sampled sounds from meri von kleinsmid, joe colley, jim hoult and a glorious project from a few years back by doug haire - nineteen american waysides features location recordings of america's lost highways, in which are installed bizarre distant manipulations of old 78 rpm records, wafting by in the distance, amongst the rumble of traffic or insects.  this really is a beautiful example of themed phonography - check it out!

we also featured a framework intro recorded during our travels by estonian ceramic and installation artist mariliin kindsiko - now, there were many more of you we met out there who promised intros, don't think we've forgotten!  we'll be looking out for them in the post soon...

08.07.05

so, folks, as of tonight framework will be entering that most ubiquitous of things, the summer repeat schedule!  my own schedule and upcoming travels have made this a necessity - the first break framework has had in it's 3 year history!  i must say i am pleased to be able to give another airing to the selected programs, which are all framework:focus editions from the last year, starting with earlier editions and working up to a repeat of aaron ximm's fine one minute vacations program in late august.  i will send out playlists as usual repeating the schedule information and reprinting the program info from the program's original mailout.  please, however, don't stop sending material for airplay!  i will still be collecting submissions and intro submissions for the resumption of normal broadcasting as of the 26th of august!

and let me also explain where i will be during this time: i leave shortly for a trip home to the states, where i will be playing my first ever u.s. gigs.  these will be happening on the 16th of july in boston, the 23rd of july in new york city, and the 30th of july in portland, maine.  if you are in any of these places, please come along and say hello!  soon after that i will be departing for the  PostsovkhoZ5 festival at moks in tartu, estonia, where i will be creating a new sound installation around the festival's theme for 2005, public/private.  again, if you are nearby (slightly less likely), please drop in!  you can find detailed info on all these activities on my website, http://www.murmerings.com.

well, back from a momentarily very wet, but overall rather pleasing glastonbury festival - hardly made it out of our crew area, as usual, but had a good time mingling amongst the customers of our swanky establishment, and even met up with another resonance presenter, mic in hand, who managed to blag a free sample from the dessert trolley to eat on-air for an upcoming clearspot.  he also promised to record up an intro and send some festival sounds for the show, so maybe an upcoming framework glastonbury special!  the sounds of washed out tents floating away, perhaps...

in this show we heard sounds from the great wildlife recordist douglas quin, from an amazing collection of antarctica recordings; we also heard a wonderful new cd by loren chasse on ex-framework presenter joel stern's naturestrip label, had another listen to the wonderful new dead letters spell out dead words cd on con-v, and sampled sounds from pablo reche & ubeboet, prolific framework contributor keith de mendonca, and rolf julius.

you'll forgive me if this note is brief - i am manically preparing to set off for glastonbury festival (believe it or not!).  not, as you might imagine, to catch the acts on the main stage, but to slog away all night in the lost vagueness black tie restaurant, to which i have a long link.  yes, i will be working long hours, so if you're in the vicinity, drop in and say hello - i'll be the one near the bar with the ridiculous moustache...  more to the point, this was a great show, featuring a tbc md that i've had in my 'to play' pile for far too long, a spectacular live bmb con. live mini-cd. and a local (as local is it's gets - two streets over from framework central!) cd from stoke newington's own scrawn.

if you haven't already, do drop in and have a gander at the new framework website - plenty of info including a full playlist archive from the past years of broadcasting, and coming soon an on demand stream of the latest program.  it's at http://www.resonancefm.com/framework, or by following the 'radio' link on my website, http://www.murmerings.com.

another great intro recorded by keith de mendonca preceded a superb collection of new sounds this week, namely eric la casa's excellent new cd on fringes, stephan mathieu's latest endeavour the sad mac, and a plethora of unreleased sounds from phill harding, meri von kleinsmid and mike harding.  mike gave us a somewhat confusing field recording for airplay, the lure of which we couldn't resist: a recording of resonancefm's reception at his home in balham, south london (hopefully it sometimes gets better than that).  what happens when you play a recording of a radio station from afar on the same radio station from the studio?  does the world implode?  we had to find out...

this week saw the broadcast of our may edition of framework:focus, featuring one of my favorite phonographers' community projects of all time, aaron ximm's one minute vacations.  for 3 1/2 years, aaron has been faithfully posting a new one minute vacation for our listening pleasure every monday on his website, http://www.quietamerican.org (click on the hollow flag) - the vacations have their origins all over the world and are submitted by all levels of recordists.  each recordings is a 60 second untreated field recording, an aural snapshot, a quintessential framework.  we sampled 60 (natch) of these one minute recordings, and were treated to aaron's own insights on the project, on his own work, and on the art of listening.  a definite gem of the framework:focus series - if you missed it, do try to tune in to wednesday's repeat!

i have another announcement to make, which is that framework's website is finally online!  it is still being polished, but at the moment you can find info on the program, contact addresses, introduction recording guidelines, and a complete archive of our 4 years of playlists!  and coming very soon (the fairies are working away as i type) we will be streaming the latest edition of framework for a full week, from wednesday to wednesday, after the 11am repeat, with an extra week's stream for our focus editions (during our off-week - the first of each month).  we should be able to get that sorted in time to have aaron's focus available before our next live broadcast on june 10th.  framework's website is available here: http://www.resonancefm.com/framework, or by going to my recording project's website (which i will permit myself to plug here - lot's of info, images and sound already available), http://www.murmerings.com, and clicking on 'radio.'

many fine surprises in this edition, among them a superb new release by thomas ekelund, aka dead voices spell out dead words, on the con-v label, a great and, for me, newly discovered release by justin bennett from 1998, and some eerie icy sounds from one of framework's newly made hungarian contacts.  we started of this show with a track of twisted broken organ playing in the first sample of the providence, ri, based cdr label free matter for the blind.  this was preceded by yet another excellent intro recorded by our very own adam wimbush.  intros have been slow to come in of late (except for adam and his unknown - to adam, that is - co-conspirator keith de mendonca, who've been carrying the torch for me together for awhile now), so: DO IT!  NOW!  go get a microphone, a dictaphone, a tape recorder, dat, md, whatever you please, and record a framework intro!  the guidelines are below - now i will sit back and wait for the tapes/discs/mp3s to come rolling in...

next week's program is not to me missed: the may edition of framework:focus features aaron ximm's (aka the quiet american) one minute vacations project - amid a soundscape of, yes, you guessed it, 60 vacations from the past 3 1/2 years, we hear aaron's thoughts on the project, it's conception, and the phonographic arts in general (as well as the clinking of the ice cubes in his scotch - now i, personally, wouldn't recommend ice in a laphroaig, aaron!  ; )    for more info on aaron's work and one minute vacations, see http://www.quietamerican.org, and click on the hollow flag.

new sounds this week from many old favorites: a new cd by keith berry on crouton music, as well as a great double cd collaboration on antifrost between marc behrens and nicolaus heyduck entitled plastic | metal, each disc composed entirely from sounds produced by one of those two materials.  we were also lucky enough to receive a new disc of unreleased recordings from jeph jerman (we'll hear more from that disc in the coming weeks), the most recent outing from philip jeck (including a framework-appropriate turntable-hum track!) and new works, released and un-, from the dutch composer boca raton.

it's somewhat late now, but, as we mentioned on the air, if you're in london you have one more day to catch an interesting exhibition of sound installations entitled me and my shadow, featuring work by chris watson in collaboration with thor mcintyre-burnie, duncan whitley, loretta bosence and liz haven.  it's at wilton's music hall in london's east end, and tomorrow's the last day.  the exhibit closes at 7pm, but there is a closing performance at 8pm by janek schaefer and philip jeck - not to be missed!  for more information see the organiser's website at http://www.measure.org.uk, and click on me and my shadow at the bottom,

after being completely blown away by rsundin's recent antifrost release, hagring (which we listened to back in february), we went back to some older efforts, the first two parts of his series on wake-dreaming, which were released respectively on bake and ground fault.  these, needless to say, are great as well.  we heard some live material from mnortham and hitoshi kojo's collaborative project, kodama, recorded on the site of an installation they created for the swiss arts center arsenic, in lausanne (a recording which also features a cameo appearance from some other framework favorites, kuwayama-kijima).  this led to more pleasant surprises from the realm of collaboration when we sampled the excellent new effort from the american helen scarsdale agency by fellow northerners b j nilsen (sweden) and stilluppsteypa (iceland).  also sampled were the more delicate soundscapes created by archive, in an mp3 only release entitled music in black and white, and an unreleased work by cheapmachines.

for this, our april edition of framework:focus, we featured a recent project by local london label authorised version entitled ^observer drift, a 2cd compilation consisting entirely of untreated field recordings from a well dispersed collection of artists.  the likes of francisco lopez, janek schaefer, leafcutter john, frans de waard and dave phillips bring us distant american thunderstorms, the minutiae of insect larvae, and the chilling freezing of microphones.  we heard a solid 60 minute soundscape constructed from these recordings, with a brief interlude of explanation on the project's background.

for any more info on the project, see autorised version's website at http://www.a-version.co.uk, or for specific track details, see http://www.a-version.co.uk/drift.

a great show this week focusing especially on the recently discovered (by me, anyway) work of australian sound artist lawrence english - two very different albums; one seemingly made up entirely of untreated hydrophone recordings, and the other full of lush tonal composition.  this mixed well with another binaural soundscape from prolific contributor dallas simpson, a look back at one of bernhard günter's compositions from a re-release of an early album, more untreated recording from autumn records (the same label as english's hydrophone...) by ben owen, and some greek rumblings from the ever-present antifrost label.  we also heard a few tracks from the album interview with the eggs, by simon keep, which we featured on the show as a cdr a few years back.  we are now pleased to announce it has seen the light of day as an official release, on the sub rosa label, no less, and it is well worth a listen...

we sampled almost exclusively unreleased submissions it this edition, both from new artists and old favorites.  we began the show with a 20 minute mix of sounds from an installation piece commissioned by fact (the foundation for art and creative technology, liverpool: http://www.fact.co.uk) and created by chris watson.  with the help of local residents, chris created two soundscapes, composed from sounds recorded in the city of liverpool, and in nearby sefton park, respectively.  the two soundscapes are broadcast on two separate cable television channels in a single towerblock overlooking the city and the park, so residents can switch between the two while looking at their places of origin from their windows.   fact was kind enough to invite me down to experience the installation in the home of one of the residents, and also gave me copies of the two soundscapes in order that i be able to share them with you, dear listeners...

we also explored submissions by two new artists to framework, who each sent entire discs of submission, so we should be hearing more from them soon: we heard two raw but creatively executed field recordings from australia's anthony magen (anthonym) and two delicately composed offerings from france's emmanuel mieville.  all of this unreleased material was joined by a single new release on colin potter's icr label, the sublime echoings of long heat, the new collaboration by jonathan coleclough and lethe.  we heard samples both from the main disc and the limited edition second disc (long heat second part) that comes with the first 250 copies.

an extensive look at the new touch records release by jacob kirkegaard this week, which is a collection of 'geothermal recordings of vibrations in the ground around the area of krisuvik, geysir and myvatin in iceland.' kirkegaard goes on to explain that 'the recordings have been carried out using accelerometers inserted in to the earth at various places around the geysers, mapping the volcanic aspects of volcanic activity at the surface of the earth.'  a fascinating listen...

we also heard new works by mnortham, cria cuervos, xabier erkizia, hitoshi kojo, and a documentation of pauline oliveros' nyc ringout demonstration (consisting of a score for mass public bell-ringing), as recorded by ben owen.

and congrats to john exby, of littleton, colorado, usa, who won the copy of the split mnortham/tbc/brume cd that we gave away in our last regular show.  we're building up a little stack of giveaways, so tune in if you'd like to snag one.  and if your sending material in, consider sending 2 copies if you'd like to host a giveaway - as obviously it'll be so good that if you only send one i'll have to keep it!  ; )

this was march's framework:focus edition, featuring a studio visit from the curator of the online mp3 label stasisfield, john kannenberg.  john spoke to us about stasisfield's online exhibition the audible still-life, and brought us a selection of the sounds used in it, as well as a number of the resulting tracks from the accompanying cd release.  each participating artist was given four directives:

1. construct a still-life

2. create a visual artwork that documents the still-life

3. record the sound that the still-life made

4. create an audio composition derived from the sound of the still life

the resulting exhibition, as well as information on the cd release, can be found here: http://www.stasisfield.com/space/still-life. the second half of the show consisted of live studio performance by john also using some of the material from the exhibition.  for more info on the stasisfield mp3 label and the work of john kannenberg, see http://www.stasisfield.com and http://home.earthlink.net/~jkannenberg.

we exorcised some ghosts during this edition of framework - over the years our own personal biases have more often than not let us away from voices in our broadcasts (except for my own dulcet tones, of course).  the structure of this broadcast, however, was inspired by an antipodean compilation entitled spoken and field, compiled by tim coster and out on a cdr label called claudia.  it's 34 short tracks all feature the human voice in some capacity, from overheard conversations to poetry, interviews and family recordings.  this opened a window through which both chris watson and felicity ford, two other recently vocal submitters, also jumped.

all of these voices (the voices! the voices!) were not alone however - they were tempered by many other soothing sounds: the beautifully organic ambience of spiracle, some old favorite beequeen, and a few chloe invaders in the form of two jasons (kahn and lescalleet) and the united states of belt.

our next edition (this friday, the 18th of march) is march's framework:focus program, featuring a visit from stasisfield curator john kannenberg.  john is bringing many sounds from an online exhibition featuring familiar framework names (steve roden, sawako, john hudak...) entitled audible still life, and will also treat us to our first live studio set of 2005.  hope you can listen!

ian cochran  /  framework intro

recorded on a floating dock at the market on granville island, false creek, vancouver

beequeen  /  10 minutes before the worm  /  sugarbush  /  raum 312

an old favorite, this track featuring plenty of water and a harmonising airplane

http://www.beequeen.nl

alicia frankovich  /  wooden trampoline  /  spoken and field (compilation)  /  claudia

mostly unintelligible, we discern only an 'oh my god' and something about 'industrial'...

richard francis  /  tv remote control manual lost again  /  spoken and field (compilation)  /  claudia

a conversation between grandmother and grandson?  in any case, the electric knife will definitely not work...

fiona connor  /  vanuatu 1  /  spoken and field (compilation)  /  claudia

maybe someone can translate these multiple voices and let us know?

chris watson  /  patagonia  /  two winds  /  -

chris sets the scene for us by describing the setting of this dry, rustling wind

http://www.chriswatson.net

spiracle  /  exude  /  sympathetic field  /  octpia

forest, fall, fog, insects, and wire recorded in oze (japan) and varanasi (india)

chris watson  /  mt. sarakura, japan  /  two winds  /  -

no scene setting this time, but the locals are vocal

http://www.chriswatson.net

catherine garet  /  serkan and sara's ballad  /  spoken and field (compilation)  /  claudia

a perspective on home and the splashing that goes with it

beequeen  /  the house i live in  /  sugarbush  /  raum 312

another not-quite-melodic gem of elemental scrapes from this 1995 (10 years!) release

http://www.beequeen.nl

felicity ford  /  conversation with rajesh mehta  /  -  /  -

what are the implications of discussing the means of capturing your discussion?

http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk

felicity ford  /  girlsong  /  -  /  -

how did this little girl know what key to sing in the match the beequeen number she's being mixed with?

http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk

grace blindell  /  excerpt from recordings of gaza  /  spoken and field (compilation)  /  claudia

a cityscape of voices and discussion, a good learner

felicity ford  /  jamming in a field in ireland with diarmiud, his broken guitar, and a horse that tried to eat (a) my hat (b) my microphone  /  -  /  -

perhaps my own subtle bowing of the head to the upcoming st patrick's day and all it's glorious music

http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk

spiracle  /  frux  /  sympathetic fields  /  octpia

clear tones leading us from our reel derived from water and its devices

united states of belt  /  ping pong holiday  /  welcome to pancake alley  /  chloe/champ

they say ping pong, blueberry pancakes, fireworks, wamagadoon, plus much more... and they mean it!

http://www.chloechloe.cc, http://www.champrecords.com

jason kahn / jason lescalleet  /  dronevil3  /  red room  /  chloe

field recording?  maybe - there are 'tapes' in the credits.  but who's counting anyway?

25.02.05

this edition concentrated again on long and multiple explorations of just a few releases - 2 long tracks from eric la casa's surprisingly manipulated work nuees, a collaboration with and accompaniment for an exhibition by french sculptor jephan de villiers (released in an edition with a book on de villiers work); long looks at 2 unreleased works by adam wimbush and alessandro fogar; several dips into ronnie sundin's latest ethereal effort hagring; and a historical nod to the rusty hinges of pierre henry.

next friday sees peter cusack's vermillion sounds take the friday 8:30 slot; we'll be back the following friday, the 11th, for our next edition, and the friday after that, the 18th, for march's framework:focus, featuring a live studio performance by stasisfield's john kannenberg.

one long slow developing soundscape formed from the harmonic changes of, perhaps, humming kitchen appliances?

eric la casa  /  crepuscule  /  nuees  /  rurart

alessandro fogar  /  -  /  soundframes  /  -

another sampling from further on in this work, becoming more frantic with larger swathes of more textured sound in multiple layers

http://www.fogar.it

ronnie sundin  /  -  /  hagring  /  antifrost

the final segment of this piece, where the restrained minimal nature of the work is finally unleashed into a mammoth soaring drone

18.02.05

this was our first edition of framework:focus for 2005, and was curated and produced by uk sound artist dallas simpson.  entitled peggy's paradise, it featured a sound walk/environmental diary recorded by dallas' mother on a fall day in 1988.  dallas himself describes his mother's recordings, which began in the 70's as letters to her son, thusly: 'Mum's work is about emotive description, rather than any kind of objective accuracy. It is the sheer simplistic joy of the moment by moment experience that is communicated.'

for more information on dallas' work, and on peggy's paradise, you can visit his website at http://www.waterpump.f9.co.uk/.  if you missed this edition of framework:focus, or would like to hear it again, it will be repeated this wednesday, the 23rd of february, at 11:00am gmt.  our next live broadcast will be this coming friday, the 25th of february, at 8:30pm gmt.

first, a correction: i announced last playlist that 2005's first edition of framework:focus, which is coming up this friday, the 18th of february, would feature a live performance by stasisfield's john kannenberg.  in fact, john will be joining us for our second edition of framework:focus, which will air on the 18th of march.  this coming friday's edition will feature a work presented by regular framework contributor dallas simpson, in the form of an unedited soundwalk recorded in 1988 by his mother, entitled peggy's paradise  dallas himself describes his mother's detailed narrative description of her surroundings thusly: 'Mum's work is about emotive description, rather than any kind of objective accuracy. It is the sheer simplistic joy of the moment by moment experience that is communicated.'  please tune in if you can - it should be a great show.

this edition was held together by a skeleton of tranquil recordings made by jesse paul miller, along with some of his composed (although still very raw) work.  we also heard recent unreleased work by jean-luc guionnet, both solo and in collaboration with eric la casa.  this was tempered by noisier outings on the 23five label; some live material from francisco lopez, and some re-released archival material by gum, a vinyl manipulating project by andrew curtis and philip samartzis from the late 80's.

28.01.05

we continued our deep exploration of several recent arrivals this week with several tracks from sawako's and/oar release yours gray, and and/oar frontman dale lloyd's stasisfield mp3 release turba/lateral minor.  the first few of these melted into a backdrop of ilios' fine crackling venta elektra (on antifrost), and led us eventually to some heavily processed brickwork from lief elggren's the cobblestone is the weapon of the proletariat, and some more soothing sounds from scott taylor's conv mp3 release castaway.  this was all preceded by a framework introduction recorded for us london painter and mosaic artist henri simson.

next friday, as each first friday of the month, sees the monthly airing of peter cusack's vermillion sounds in the field recording slot; we return the week after, the 11th, for our next edition.  the show after that, on the 18th, will be this year's first edition of framework:focus, featuring a live performance by the head of the aforementioned stasisfield mp3 label, john kannenberg, visiting from the states.

14.01.05

a fine mix this edition based around peter cusack's recent release, baikal ice, as a skeleton - these frozen, crackling recordings mixed well with dallas simpson's delicate natural soundscape and john hudak's abstracted suspended ringing.  our initial softness was brought to bay by joe colley's malfunctioning equipment in two tracks from one of my favorite releases from last year, desperate attempts at beauty (this is the second set of tracks we've featured from this disc), and a rare compositional outing for toshiya tsunoda (from the split lp whose opposite face - justin bennett's cacerolada - was featured before it's release last year, and then again in one of our end of 2004 wrap-up shows).

as the new year shapes up i can announce that framework:focus will be continuing for the foreseeable future as a regular feature.  my goal will be to produce one focus edition per month (starting with february), which will generally air on the 3rd friday - thus this year's first should be on 18.02.05.  i hope you enjoy the focus format - i, for one, have been enjoying their evolution over the past few months!

one more time: i start each (regular) edition of framework with an introduction recorded by a listener/contributor, and have had many fine, fine examples over the past few years.  but lately my stock has been running low - perhaps the novelty of the request has worn off, but please, if ever you would consider submitting a framework introduction for airplay, whether you are an experienced phonographer or have never held a tape recorder, i would be honored to receive your contribution!  every intro submission sent in to date has been used, so it's a sure-fire way to get some airplay!  see the guidelines below the playlist...
