well - this was my first regular edition of framework since - let's see - since september!  it's been a long time, but from now i should be back again doing every other show.  take this as good news or bad - to each his own tastes.  that said we do have a very exciting array of new framework:afield proposals coming up in 2007, this first two playing catch-up on the 2006 series, broadcasting two editions that never aired due to technical mix-ups, by jonathan coleclough in the uk and emmanuel mieville in france.  jonathan comes up first, that's next week, for our first show of 2007...

this edition saw us diving into the pile that's been steadily growing since september, with new collaborative sounds from chris watson with bj nilsen, rlw with domenico sciajno, and fabio orsi with my cat is an alien, as well as some unreleased solo work from catherine clover, andre castro, jeph jerman, and an estonian artist i encountered at a performance in viljandi this past summer known as p0rt.  all of this led off by a framework intro recorded by km krebs...

and a happy new year to all!

this week's edition of framework:afield has been produced in madrid, spain, by m.a. tolosa.  playlist below.  in his own words:

"a variety of approximations to the sound work based on field recordings through different techniques and diverse locations.  from the classic soundwalk (dan warburton) later edited and processed, compositions made in the studio based exclusively on recordings taken in rural locations (yannick dauby), pure, raw field recordings without editing or processing (jon tulchin) to industrial, urban recordings (francisco lopez, pablo reche & ubeboet).  the session ends with a recordings made inside/outside at the studio in 1969 during the recording sessions of 'the trout mask replica' album by captain beefheart."

next week will be our final show for 2006, and will be my first show behind the reigns since september!  as of the new year i will be with you more regularly, returning to our normal schedule of weekly alternations between framework and framework:afield.  meanwhile, i'm very excited about the new series of framework:afield coming up in the new year - lots of new contributors and great proposals.

we have one more edition of framework:afield to air for you next week, this one by m.a. tolosa, aka ubeboet, and then, at long last, starting with the last show of 2006, we return to our regular framework schedule!  the 27th will be my first show in donkey's years, as they say, and i'm looking forward to being back in the pilot's chair, albeit a virtual one from here along my continuing travels.  as we approach the end of our initial line-up, i think i can now definitely say that this framework:afield project has proved a treat, and i would like to continue this alternating format in 2007.  hopefully some of the current contributors can continue their roles as emissaries, but i'd like to try throwing open the gates as well - so if you'd be interested in producing a show for framework in 2007, please get in touch!

this week's edition of framework:afield was produced in lisbon, portugal by paulo raposo.  in his own words:
This edition is based on the  two latest Pushing the Medium events, which took place in the remote locations of Nodar (Portugal, September), and Tópolo (Italy, October). Both events gathered a group of sound artists and others presented with the unique challenge of developing site-specific projects within the 10 day duration. The isolated topography and habitat served as a frame for working in territories outside the view of an increasingly urbanized Europe dominated by centralized cultural activity. The focus centered on the context and location of both places and their geographical circumstances, encouraging collaborative work and open dialogue between the artists, as well as between the artists and the community. I co-produced the event in Portugal while Antonio della Marina produced the Italian event. Mr. John Grzinich produced the first in Estonia back in 2004.

The result is intended to be an autonomous radio show, and not a documentary of the “PTM” events.

It features collective sound materials produced during the events by the following artists:
Yannick Dauby, Murmer, John Grzinich, Noid, Olivier Feraud, Hitoshi Kojo, Alessandro Fogar, Maksims Shentelevs and Paulo Raposo.

technical difficulties meant the edition of framework:afield that should have aired this week did not, but was replaced by a repeat from 06.09.06, which was an edition produced in san diego, ca, by marcos fernandes. for more info on that piece you can see his website, http://www,marcosfernandes.com.

meanwhile, i've decided to put the edition that *should* have aired this week online anyway, as i think most of you listen that way (shout out any of you that actually listen to the live broadcast, whether via the resfm website or on one of those old fashioned radio-thingies). so this week's podcast and stream will be the edition produced in paris, france, by emmanuel mieville. for more info see http://emieville.free.fr.

this week's edition of framework:afield was produced in seattle, usa, by robert millis and steve barsotti.  for more info you can see their respective websites at http://www.climaxgoldentwins.com and http://www.kazbar.org.  robert says:
'In Late Summer 2005, I co-curated (with writer Fionn Meade) a large new media/sound installation exhibition in Seattle, called In Resonance. Contributing artists included Steve Roden, Thurston Moore, Toshiya Tsunoda, Jesse Paul Miller, Jim Haynes, Stephen Vitiello, and Jennifer West. Part of the intention of In Resonance was its focus as a group sound show. Sound is difficult to contain, it leaks and mingles and overlaps in persistent and naughty ways. We decided to embrace this, and rather than isolate the different installations we aimed to let them resonate together to create an over-arching soundscape that could be experienced in addition to the individual installations. I asked members of Seattle’s Phonographer’s Union to walk through the exhibition with their recording equipment and document how they experienced the show--from ambient sounds to sonic details, from visitor comments to malfunctions and conversations--we then burned instant CDRs from these recordings that we sold to visitors. Each phonographer produced startlingly different takes on the same source material. This edition of Framework:afield is an amalgamation of those recordings that phonographer and sound artist Steve Barsotti (www.kazbar.org) and I put together using various chance operations.'

this week's edition of framework:afield was produced on gran canaria, in the canary islands, by origami boe (aka or_/13051826, or_/boe, tore h. boe...). boe says:
'Taking on 4 different scenarios, mixing them into 4 layers after 4 strategies; phasing, editing, looping and equalising. Coherent with my recent return to the visual arts this piece is more graphic than musical, creating a long journey through a landscape of bird conversation, child entusiasmo, trivial droning and sudden interruptions. An early work(sub)title was "The Birds Sing Nono" due to my interest in the tease-denial moulding in the compositions of Luigi Nono, yet after a short while the humour appeared, linking this piece to the miniatures of Runzelstirn & Gürgelstock and the likes. This is (once again) a debut work, also my debut podcast, and my last work on the 1996 SoundEdit software, so it feels proper that it was a request from an amigo that spurred the whole thing. Singing and general comments throughout by David A206 of or_/kanaria.'

this week's edition of framework:afield was produced in birmingham, uk, by chris herbert, and is created entirely from sounds recorded during a series of walks along the many canals of said city. for more information, see http://www.chrisherbert.net or http://www.myspace.com/chrisherbert

you may have noticed a sudden flurry of afield programs over the last several weeks; the reason for this is that i wanted to be sure i was able to broadcast all the shows i received, including the programs i've been keeping as back-ups in case any deadlines were missed. as it stands, no one has missed a deadline, all shows have been received, and all have been suitable for airing! so i decided to use several of my own regular edition slots for airing the extra programs. so: to fit them all in this year, as planned, i will be airing afield programs from now until almost the end of the year - i have reserved 2006's last program, on december 27th, for myself...

this week's edition was produced in portland, oregon, usa, by theodore holdt. for more information see http://www.wildskil.com. theodore says:
'hey it is done. tonight. lots of work. some of the recording sources are bees, rain in a 55 gallon drum in taos from snow melt, left wing extremists shooting plastic american icons and soda pop in utah, musical improvisation in a mysterious crater in achen germany, a nest of baby birds, shakuhachi, the guitar i built over winter, overtone singing while driving, a german friend snoring in mysterious crater and....crows. it runs a total of 56 min. i will send it in the mail tomorrow. hope all is well. gototogotobed'

there was no show on the 3rd due to technical difficulties, but this week's edition of framework:afield was produced in london, uk by regular framework contributor adam wimbush.  adam writes:
'In this edition of framework:afield I’m thawing out a piece built from recordings of refrigerators. The bulk of the piece is comprised of contributions kindly sent to me via e-mail as well as my own audio forays into fridges. These recordings vary in proximity to the fridges (underneath, inside, behind etc...) to complementary treatments and compositions built from fridge sounds. Essentially i’ve composed the piece to ebb and flow through all the recordings. describing our relationship with the appliance and mapping out sonically the components and compartments of a fridge, so lets investigate the plink plonks, gurgles, rumblings and hummings of a refrigerator and chill out for an hour. This has been tremendous fun and i couldn’t help the puns! Here's a list of everybody id like to thank for their mp3’s and generosity:  Steve B - FridgeOscar Marsh - Zanussi ZL 66 WThomas Park - a.In The Fridge, b.FridgescapeLloyd Barrett - FridgeKevin Sample - Fridge_060412Steven A Barsotti - Freezer3Keith de Mendonca - Kefalonian fridgeBjorn Ericksson - Ivars fridgeJim Hoult - FridgeBen Owen - Fridges 1e, 2e, 3eSharon Katz - Ottawa fridgeDerek Holzer for pointing me to Hundekeil’s recording from ::soundtransit:: & Ward Weis’s site ‘Fridges & Streets’Patrick for FrameworkAnders Ostberg for the shout out to www.phonography.com also this is as close to a track list as you’ll get, sorry but due to the structure of the piece it was virtually impossible to create a tracklisting. Enjoy!'

a regular edition of framework this week, slowly catching up on the big backlog of material we have waiting for airplay.  we took an extended listen to a truly beautiful self-released double cd by swiss phonographer leny puksar - leny sent us this collection of icy sounds entitled winter music, all untreated recordings of frozen sounds, melting and cracking ice, chilled winds, it's as though you can hear the temperature of the air.  really excellent sounds, check them out!

we also heard several selections from the new collaboration between marc behrens and paulo raposo, constructed from sounds recorded in portugal on lisbon's commuter ferries.  really nice work here, a satisfying balance between heavy treatments and natural resonances.

and a few single tracks this week - the first sound experiment by the estonian artist fantomas, a stunning untreated recording of a radio antenna by stephen cornford, a rainstorm with some fortuitous found objects by dallas simpson, and an intro recorded for us this week by k.m. krebs.

there was no show, you may or may not have noticed, on the 13th due to some special programming on resonance that day.  Marcos' edition, therefore, also got an extra week on the stream, so hopefully you got a chance to catch that.

this week featured john hudak's edition of framework:afield (http://www.johnhudak.net).  john says:
'the recording is three 19 minute segments.  the first third is the original recording of crickets in my back yard, recorded on september 5, 2006, 2am.  the second part is a half speed version, and the last is a quarter speed version.  in this time of late summer, besides the sparrows, finches, cardinals, and downy woodpeckers during the day, the only other "big" sounds are coming from these crickets in the night.'

06.09.06

the 6th featured marcos fernandes' edition of framework:afield (http://www.marcosfernandes.com), just in time for the anniversary of september
11th - it formed part of a project entitled ready for the revolution.  in marcos' own words:
'it examines the dissenting voices of Activism in the US following the re-election of George W. Bush in November of 2004. the phonographies that comprise the source material for this piece were made during several peace rallies and anti-war marches during 2004 and 2006. this work's myriad manifestations will include sound installations, live performances (soundscape improvisations), a radio program (the framework show) and an audio CD.  i find the broadcast date very appropriate for my piece.'

30.08.06

catching up on several shows this plays - i hope you'll forgive the back-up, caused by a full schedule in the build-up to my departure from estonia and my return to the big smoke.  it was nice to be back in the studio this week, doing my first live show in 4 months, and my first in the new wednesday afternoon slot!  so two regular editions of framework to report on here (the last from estonia and the first from back in london), and one edition of framework:afield, this one produced in vienna, austria by bernhard gal.  since i'm in the vein of asking forgiveness, i will ask forgiveness as well for, just this once, dispensing with my oh-so-poetic track descriptions in the following playlists.  i know you all lap them up, but this will be a long one already, so they will be left by the wayside...

next week will be our next edition of framwork:afield, this one produced in san diego, california by marcos fernandes.  for more information see http://www.marcosfernandes.com.

02.08.06

two consecutive editions of framework:afield these past two weeks, to make way for the station maintenance shutdown tomorrow - so no new edition this week.  for our online stream we split the extra week between the two shows, leaving 26.07 up for a few extra days.  so if you've been looking to hear the show from 02.08 online, it's now up and streaming, and will remain available until the 17th.

this week we heard an edition produced in minneapolis by mike hallenbeck (http://www.juniorbirdman.com/archive).   featuring the work of several minnesotan phonographers from the thaw project.

the 16th will be our next normal edition of framework - it's been awhile, so we've got lots of great material building up!  it will also be my last edition produced here in estonia - after a wonderful 3 and a half month stay the time has finally come to move on...

26.07.06

this week’s edition of framework:afield was produced in london by phil julian, of authorised version (http://www.a-version.co.uk), featuring work from the authorised version archives along with a recording of a live performance by dallas simpson at last year's placard headphone festival in london

19.07.06

this week we aired our latest regular edition of framework, featuring many more sounds recorded during my extended stay here in mooste, estonia, as well as recent releases by spiracle, henrik andersson, eric cordier, several tracks from a recent collection of untreated field recordings from taiwan by yannick dauby (there is a second collection of free mp3s available for download here: http://www.editions-ere.net/projet106), and also an older release by bernhard gunter, as inspired by the work of one of our regular contributors, jeph jerman.

our next edition, coming up this wednesday, will be an edition of framework:afield produced in london, uk, by phil julian, of authorised version (http://www.a-version.co.uk).  the following week, the 2nd of august, which would normally be a regular edition of framework, will instead feature another edition of framework:afield, this one produced in minneapolis, minnesota by mike hallenbeck (http://www.juniorbirdman.com/sound).  we're airing this one a week early as programming has been suspended for the day on wednesday the 9th of august for a general technical overhaul of our london studios - so no framework on the 9th!  we'll be back on our normal schedule on the 16th of august with our next regular edition...

i took the opportunity this week for some blatant self-promotion by featuring some sounds from my new release in collaboration with jonathan coleclough, husk - we heard an excerpt from the title track, as well as a section from a track on the limited bonus disc, wendthis material has been several years in he making, and even features a piece constructed from our very first meeting, an improvised collaborative set performed live on-air on framework back in 2002...

we also heard new and old sounds from moljebka pvlse, joshua manchester & brian trump, frank niehusmann (from a series of short one-take field-recording improvisations entitled day tracks), eric la casa (in his previous syllyk guise) and one more track from the recent compositional material by emmanuel mieville, which we've been slowly making our way through these past few months.  next week we present our next edition of framework:afield, this time curated in cottonwood, az, by prolific phonographer and framework contributor jeph jerman.

also, an announcement:  starting in july (with the beginning of resonancefm's summer season), framework will be bidding a fond farewell to its long-held friday night slot for a bit of sunlight - our new slot will be on wednesday afternoons at 1pm, a little lunchtime relief for all you hard workers out there.  if the new hours don't suit you, fear not, for as you surely already know you can now listen the the latest edition of framework anytime in the week following broadcast from our website, or subscribe to receive the show as a podcast.  so no more excuses!  tune in, there might be a pop quiz!

this week's edition of framework:afield was produced in limoges, france, by cedric peyronnet, aka toy.bizarrefor more information on his work, see http://www.ingeos.org.

n.b. - this week's edition was accidentally aired an hour early - from 7-8pm on fridayas a result, resonance will be re-airing the program this coming friday at 12 noonif you tuned in friday but missed the show, you can therefore catch it then, or hear it anytime in the next week via the webstream on our website.  many apologies...

The principle was simple (Same as all my radio shows) : picking up a record then mixing it with another then mixing it with another, etc... just by following the inspiration that comes from listening to the sounds. The result is a mix of extracts of tracks sounding as one unique piece.

-cedric peyronnet

a fine collection of work this week, including the first samplings of some recordings i've been making during my stay here in estonia - a local voice for our introduction, and a small floating dock on which i have been spending much of my time.  we also heard the third artist from cronica's product 06 cd that we began listening to a few weeks ago, several recordings (we may listen to a few more in the coming weeks) from room40's excellent incidental amplifications compilation, two extended excerpts from a wonderful sound collage by goh lee kwang (available for free download at the address below) and several tracks from a new release by a collection of scandinavians, lasse marhaug, joachim nordwall, and johannes helden (about whose whereabouts we've been wondering since his beautiful trente oiseaux release a few years ago).

next week's edition of framework:afield has been produced in limoges, france, by cedric peyronnet, aka toy.bizarresee http://www,ingeos.org for more info and access to an incredible archive of sound.  also remember you can now go to our website to stream the latest edition of framework, or for information on subscribing to our podcast.

so, as promised, our new podcast and stream are now up and running.  from our website you can listen to the latest edition at any time and subscribe to our podcast - or you can cut and paste the following url into your podcast program:

http://www.cloudmirror.org/murmer/framework.xml

this week's framework:afield was curated by bill thompson, american sound artist currently residing in aberdeen, scotlandbill constructed his edition using only phonography from phonographs:

Before stations like ResonanceFM and online lists like Phonography and Nature Recordists, the only way to hear or experience field recordings and documentary sound was via the occasional LP, cassette, and eventually, CD release of what was often called 'nature recordings' or even 'sound effects'.
Like many who are interested in the art of field recording, I have a personal collection of these recordings, many no longer available and only existing on LP.  I chose to present a selection from a few of my favorite.

Section One is a mix made from tracks taken from the LP "Steam-In Stereo" released by the BBC.  The sounds are of veteran trains taken out of storage and put on parade across the U.K. on August 31st, 1975  to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Recorded by the (often anonymous) team of BBC sound engineers sent out ac cross the U.K., recording locations included Shildon Railway Yard, Heighington Station, Heighington Cutting, Darlington Goods Yard, the Old Ordnance Depot, and Hill top Farm (south of Darlington.)

Section Two is a mix from two BBC LPs, "Communication in Animals-Other Animals, a Study Record" and "British Mammals and Amphibians" The majority of these recordings were made and narrated by Eric Simms, the proto-phonographer, in the 50's and 60's.  He is pictured lying in coat and slacks in a field operating a huge parabolic mic and recording device on one of the LP sleeves.  These records were made as both documentary, study guide for schools, as well as sound effects record.

Section Three is a mix from the LP "
Antarctica" released on Saydisc in 1971.  The recordings were by Edwin Mickleburgh who, although trained as a painter, joined the British Antarctic Survey as a meteorologist and was engaged in making a film for the survey.  The LP represents some of the amazing recordings he made during the exhibition.

this edition of framework:afield was produced in oxford, england, by felicity ford (http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk):

This edition of Framework has been put together by Felicity Ford of the littlesongbox and is a collection of recordings by both established and unreleased artists. Works here include recordings of children’s toys with musical mechanisms “playing,” a composition based on a woman humming along with her radio, an elderly woman singing and playing the piano, Hawaiian birds singing, the sounds created by a piano being tuned, ethnographic field recordings of sound mimesis from Tuva along with recordings of ice melting, swimming pools, computer games, church bells and, of course, some music boxes.

Much thanks to all the contributors for making such great work, for writing such friendly emails, for sending me CDs and for offering insight.

this week we featured two projects from the bookscapes project curated by platform projects, both featuring uk artist alec finlay.  the first, in collaboration with andrew hodson, is a series of writing and recordings made of and about various styles of dance - we listened to a broad collection of untreated recordings of various solo and group dance pieces, short recordings interspersed between and over the other pieces we listened to.  we also heard finlay's collaboration with framework regular chris watson, a recording of a vocal performance at a harbour on the north sea, a beautiful capture of the harbour soundscape wafting with often faint and distant vocal snatches.  this piece, siren, is due to be released in its final form this.

if you're interested in the bookscapes project, it has come to our attention that there will be a performance and launch party for the series in newcastle on thursday the 25th of may, 7:30pm at the cumberland arms, featuring performances by alec finlay, maria jardardottir and clive powell.

we also heard new recordings this week from tim coster, whose curated projects of untreated field recordings on his claudia label we have featured in past editions, new u.s. based composer juan matos capote, an mp3 release from emmanuel mieville, and three out of the four artists featured on the most recent cronica electronica product series cd (we will hear the fourth in an upcoming edition).

our next edition will continue our new framework:afield series, this one curated in the uk by sonic artist felcity ford, weaving a beautiful tapestry of often melancholic, sometimes nostalgic field recordings, musical captures and music boxes.

this edition featured a studio visit from german sound artist and radio producer michael rüsenbergwe listened to a number of michael's compositions from over the last several years, including his latest, dr. mussert's landing, from his lisboa.reloaded project.  we talked a bit about his work, about the compositional details of the works we heard, and we also partook of a few surprise pieces that michael brought with him, including a creaking metal pier that you'd swear was a saxophone...

17.03.06

this edition centered around the two most recent in the brombron series of collaborative residencies, this time between joe colley & jason lescalleet, and howard stelzer & guiseppe ielasithese two are among the most successful in the series, in my opinion, creating two strong and diverse soundscapes.  we also heard several recordings from another compilation (not so new, but new to us!), this one called continental drifts:eastern and middle european movements in 2003, and featuring experimental soundworks from hungary, slovakia and romania, among others.  and we heard another recording by malaysian artist yeoh yin pin, examples of the long-running collaboration between dave phillips and r.h.y. yau, and the latest of viv corringham's shadow-walks series, in which she is led on a favorite walk by an invited guest, recording the initial walk and mixing it's sounds with her own recreation of the walk at a later time.

our next edition is tomorrow night, and it will be the first of a new series, called framework:afield, which i am happy to announce we will be producing.  starting in may, every second week we will air an edition of framework:afieldthese editions will be produced by special invited guests from around the world, most of whom have been regular contributors to framework over the years.  they are free to use the hour as they wish; some will create documentary programs, or untreated soundscapes, some will create mixes of their favorite records, but all will give us an insight into the varying perspectives on field recording in the greater global environment.  tomorrow we will have a single taster program, produced here in london by andrew jacques, who some of you may know for his long time work with these records.  andrew has created a single long soundscape from the recorded works of walter marchetti, who, looking back through our archives, i see we have only featured once on the program, and that back in 2002!  so i hope you can tune in for our introduction to this new project!

10.03.06

this edition was held together with the second cd compilation of themed untreated field recordings we've received from the small new zealand claudia label, this one called witching hour and themed on nighttime recordings (we heard one track from this by felicity ford a few weeks ago).  there are some incredibly beautiful recordings in here, from all over the world, from scandinavian midnight suns to west african crickets to pakistani muezzins.  nice stuff.

we also heard another untreated recording by malaysian sound artist yeoh yin pin, composition on ground fault by phroq, extracts from a1996 radio mix by dutch digital artist cym, and a number of short tracks by a berlin-based artist we met on a recent trip to germany, sinebag.

we finished off this edition with a recording i've been meaning to play since we began broadcasting in 2002, and which was recently brought back to my attention by a mention on the phonography (http://www.phonography.org) mailing list - i've forgotten who is was who made this post, but thank you!  i first came across this recording in my university library in 1991, as part of a 4 cd compilation accompanying an ethnomusicology textbook entitled worlds of music: an introduction to the music of the world's peoples.  the recording, made by american ethnomusicologist james koetting in 1975, is absolutely mind-boggling: in a post office at the university of ghana countless workers are manually cancelling stamps, presumably for hours on end.  to pass the time they have developed an inherent music in their actions; they bring their stamps down onto the envelopes at hand at incomprehensibly complicated intervals to create an incredible and ever-shifting syncopation, all the while whistling, in multipart harmony, parts to an old ghanaian hymn...  if you can't track this book down, i believe this recording may be available online somewhere, if you do a bit of hunting - it's well worth it!
