16.12.07

apologies to those of you who listen via the podcast, as this is a repeat edition from a mere two weeks ago - the edition that podcasted on the 2nd of december never broadcast on fm in london due to a technical mixup, so i'm giving it another chance to air.  on the other hand, it was a fairly dense show, so perhaps it deserves another listen!

meanwhile we are now approaching resonancefm's holiday shutdown period - this means there will be no live programming between between the 22nd of december and the 7th of january (framework's first broadcast of the new year will be on january 13th).  we are following our usual procedure, which is to take a well-deserved break, but to keep podcast listeners satisfied with a new show from the archives each week, so over this holiday period you can hear shows from '02, '03 and '05, all well before we started putting the shows online.  enjoy them, and happy holidays!

this edition of framework:afield was produced in brooklyn, new york, by gill arno.  gill says:

framework:home:afield

The initial curiosity behind this sort of survey was to approach a range of ideas and feelings that come with the choice of living in a foreign country - far away from one's birthplace and the country where his or her mother tongue is spoken... voluntarily removed from the day-to-day exchange with the people that one had grown up with and their mores. Each participant was asked to submit two field recordings: one deemed of a "familiar sound" and one of an "alien sound". The definition of familiar and alien was left to the subjectivity of individual responses.

The following artists contributed their recordings:
Hitoshi Kojo (place of birth: Ibaragi, Japan/current residence: Hull, Canada), Jason Kahn (New York, NY, USA/ZŸrich, Switzerland), jgrzinich (Poughkeepsie, NY, USA/Mooste, Estonia) Marcone Galvani (Milan, Italy/Brooklyn, NY, USA), Richard Garet (Montevideo, Uruguay/New York, NY, USA), sawako (Nagoya, Japan/Brooklyn, NY, USA).

02.12.07

so - two playlists coming your way this week; i'm sending them separately to avoid confusion, as there's a lot of info in there.  in fact, this first is both a past and upcoming show - the show which podcasted on the 2nd never went out on the airwaves, due to a technical mix up, so it will be given another chance on 16.12.07.  so if you missed it...  and after next week's show, resonancefm will be taking a little break for the holidays; the studio will be shut from the 22nd of december until the 7th of january.  so, as per usual, there will be no new editions of framework for a few weeks, but i will be podcasting a few jewels from the archives.  if you have any specific shows you'd like to here from the past five years, let me know, and i will line them up for eventual podcast.  our first new edition of the new year will air on 13.01.08.

the show on the 2nd (and for the 9th) featured sounds by camilla hannan, michael prime, mountains, manu holterbach, and an intro by katie gately.  it was also a vehicle for some blatant self-promotion, featuring the new release by my project, murmer, entitled we share a shadow, on jim haynes' helen scarsdale agency in san francisco.  for more info see http://www.helenscarsdale.com.

and since we're in self-promotion mode, let me also say: if you're in london, i'll be playing a small gig next sunday night, the 16th, as part of sprawl's free advent concert series.  the details:

first, an announcement:  framework's airtime has changed one more time - we will remaining on our new sunday night, but will henceforth air from 10-11pm, in place of the previous 9-10pm.  so brew your barleycups strong and settle into that comfy chair!

this edition of framework:afield was produced in minneapolis, minnesota, usa by mike hallenbeck.  mike says:

"This edition of Framework focuses on the output of Wandering Ear, a
Minneapolis-based net label co-curated by Nathan Larson and Mike
Hallenbeck (the latter of whom assembled this broadcast). The sounds lead
us across the planet-- from a mosque in Istanbul, to the coast of
Australia, to a salt mine in Romania, to the rain forest of Brazil. Also
featured are a couple of offerings from "Melt: Minnesota Remixed", a
collection of works derived from tracks on Wandering Ear's debut release
"Thaw: Field Recordings from Minnesota" (aired previously on Framework).

All of these tracks (plus plenty else) are available for free mp3 download
from http://wanderingear.com."

this edition saw us finally exploring some of the recordings in italian artist punck's now year-old audio diary, along with a recent release by jgrzinich on twenty-hertz's paul bradley's new edition sonoro label.  meanwhile some old favorites have returned with new works: mountains, whose self-titled debut mix of field recording and acoustic instrumentation was one of our favorite works of 2005, have a 2nd endeavor now (not that new actually, from 2006) with sewn, and, after their recent mp3 release on ctrlaltcanc, the wonderful logoplasm have returned with their first physical release in many years on italy's afe records.

meanwhile, we were forced to begin this edition with a repeat framework intro, a shame, even though it was one of our all-time favorites from melanie clifford and rob grant.  but, please, record us an intro and send it in - we need them now more than ever!

11.11.07

this edition of framework:afield was produced in oxford, uk by felicity ford.  for more information see http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk.  felicity says:

"This edition of framework features a range of different approaches to

exploring the domestic soundscape and has been curated by Felicity Ford, AKA
the littlesongbox.

http://www.myspace.com/littlesongboxmusic
http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk
http://knitaluscious.blogspot.com
http://www.myspace.com/themissabilityradioshow

This show I hope illustrates some of the issues/ideas/themes around domestic
field-recordings. Strategies for capturing our everyday lives with sound
range from detailed interviews about daily tasks, as created by Kayla Bell
and Claudia Figueiredo for their graduation event - 'Mundane Appreciation
Week' - right through to electronically manipulated recordings made from
rooms with 'additional effects to make something a bit more listenable,'
(Domestic Hiss.)

Many of the recordings found in this selection began life as the sound
element in an installation; Amy Vickery's 'Stairs' was installed in a brown
package at the top of her stairs in an exhibition she did in her home,
during her graduating art show. Likewise, her '4 London Road' piece was
originally the soundtrack to a series of still photographs of domestic
locations. Suzanne Williams and Dio Mock made several soundtracks to be
installed in an old Jam Factory in huge mason jars; (the speakers were
immersed in jam.) Although their recordings are largely taken from outdoors,
I think the domestic context of the jam jar and the overall comment about
the relationships between locale and home make 'Canal Jam' a relevent
inclusion here. And this relates also to the work of John Zeman whose piece
'An evening at Home'     was the second piece for the 'What's For Dinner?'
exhibit at the Museum of Domestic Design. According to their promotional
material 'It depicted the preparation of a meal and the enjoyment  of it, in
contrast to its counterpart, which was about the journey  to obtain it.
This piece reflected the warmth and comfort of being  at home, the care that
goes into a meal, and enjoyment that comes  from sharing that meal with the
ones you love."

This edition of framework also features several excerpts of work from Aeron
and Alejandra, (The Lucky Kitchen Label) ranging from the
found-sound/manipulated sound/musical collages of 'The Shed Record' and
'Christmas in the Empire'  to their 'Family Album' in which they asked
people they knew to send in recordings - like sonic snapshots - of their
families.

With 'The Shed Record' in particular,  the music/field-recording line is
continually blurred, as we hear many moments when Aeron's Grandmother is
singing and playing the piano. This confusion about domestic
environment/music will be familiar to anyone who has grown up in an
environment where music practise, piano-playing and other 'musical' activity
is part of the soundscape; Joseph Young's 'Family Album' looks at this in
more detail, while the Kitchen Sink Dharma recording ' Dusting a Piano'
explores the less glamourous side of growing up with instruments in the
house. The end of a Diane Cluck song is also featured in relation to this
point because it is interesting that she has allowed her real life to enter
the normally sealed recording environment. The phone rings, she picks it up
and stops playing the song. Are we listening to her everyday life or to her
song or are they just the same thing?

It is Peter Cusack's recording, however, 'Onions frying in my flat' from
'Your Favourite London Sounds' that really needs to be noted here; the
cataloguing of detail from people's everyday lives that underpinned the
whole process of making 'Your Favourite London Sounds' is probably the thing
I heard which got me interested in the idea of the domestic soundscape in
the first place."

21.10.07

this edition of framework:afield was produced in new york city by ben owen.  for more information on ben and his work see http://www.benowen.org.  track listing and notes below.

please note: there will be no new edition of framework next week, the 28th of october, as resonancefm presents a special program live from the radiophonic festival in brussels from 7-11pm.  framework will return with it's next new edition on sunday the 4th of november.  meanwhile, podcast and internet listeners will be treated to another lost edition from the framework archives...

lawrence english.  4:48
storm

andy graydon.  aina. 12:49
aina    20070308
a 12 minute edit of field recordings from Maui.
order of events:
line noise.
haiku, bamboo forest, contact mic.
haiku, edge of the gulch.
rain on garage roof, contact mic.
rain on deck roof, stereo.
makamakaole stream.
haiku, small stones.
nyc, broken xmas ornament on floor.
bamboo forest, stereo.

nathan mcninch.  en-hiver.  6:03
the track is composed of a selection of winter recordings made with some of
my really low quality home made mics. you can hear the short comings of the
mics in the recordings, limited frequency range, there are a few clicks and pops...
the title is "en hiver"(in winter) recordings from the same sessions were used in
'from the falling snow' and 'a lonesome arctic waltz'
the recordings were made within a one block radius of my home in montreal,
and on my parents farm in ontario.

john clair.  valentine morning.  7:21
valentine morning with margaret and gulliver
recorded feb 14, 2007, westchester NY

gilles aubry.  siegessaule_tunnel.  5:14
This recording was made inside the about 100 meters long underground passage
allowing access to the Siegessauele monument located at a large crossroads
in the middle of Tiergarten in Berlin.
During the audition, the tunnel becomes the place of a natural mixing
process of several sound sources, redefining the terms of their encounter :
The heavy traffic noise from above is attenuated and reverberated, resulting
in a continuous and smooth sonic flow.
The various sounds of the pedestrians walking inside blend in progressively,
becoming more defined as they get closer to the microphone and vanishing
again after a while.

ben scott.  file0199.  4:11
it is soft and odd. a recording of a Cleo toy with batteries gone dry,
and other muffled room sounds buried way down deep, almost sounding EVP
style. it is a straight up field rec, with no edits, or manip. nor was it set up
in any way.

joda clement.  perthlake2.  1:50
lake feedback, metal canoe (w/ external battery powered monitor)
(Perth, Ontario, July 2006)
So you know, this excerpt was recorded in the middle of a lake, in Perth Ontario,
with my small military radio used as a monitor, positioned in the middle of a metal
canoe, with a microphone taped to the side of the canoe, pointed at the lake's surface,
going into my Minidisc and the output sent to the monitor (thus: feeback informed by
the environment). This wild outburst seemed to be informed by my physical relationship
to the monitor as we moved across the lake (I was not paddling).

kristen roos.  comox_train_starting.  2:34
This is a recording that was made during a train ride down Vancouver Island.
It was recorded in the bathroom of this one car train, the only space that had lots of
ambient sounds because it had a toilet that just dropped right out to the tracks.

gill arno.  blackout at leo.  4:05
sometime before 1997
this one somehow made it to my current hard drive, migrating computer after computer
through more than ten years of upgrades. for some reason it is mono - i'm not sure why
but i imagine i was working with mono sound files back then to keep a minimum cpu
usage. the recording was made at leoncavallo, the venerable milanese squat. ozric
tentacles, a big stoner group from england were playing that night and in the middle of
the concert there was a power failure. for a long time we were all packed together in this
huge pitched black warehouse space...

gen ken montgomery.  hong-kong-birdmarket.  7:04
walking through hong kong birdmarket, 1998

gill arno.  Avrà risposto qualcuno? (excerpt)  9:24
september, 1997
there was a point in the subway system in milan in which the sound in the tunnel would
go "wooooo", a kind of scream that i had always thought was quite lovely. so one day just
before moving to nyc i recorded it with my cheap walkman.
it was nice to find and listen again to that 10 years old tape - of course it satisfies my
fixation with memory and displacement. but subway recordings are kind of common place
in the field of phonography, so i hope you will still find it interesting in its own right, beyond
my subjective take.
the title comes from a voice that you can hear towards the end. it means
"will anybody have replied?"

14.10.07

getting back into the flow of things now - with this, our second regular edition since being back on the air, we aired a stack of tracks that have been waiting, well, virtually forever.  giuseppe ielasi's disc on hapna is so not new anymore that he's already released another disc on hapna.  mykel boyd sent me his disc when i was still living in another country.  toy bizarre's track is from sometime in the 90's.  marcelle deschenes' almost wouldn't play for the dust.  and sebastiane hegarty's collection of sonic scenarios (including vibrating fences and lost children) has been waiting since his mother (featured in this week's introduction) was but a young woman.  but now, at least, they've all got the attention they deserve...

so, this was out first new edition since july, and we've built up stacks of great material since that time.  taking it slowly to begin with, though, we sampled just a few long tracks from our stacks - so sense rushing into things.  so we heard (relatively) new sounds from the labels 23five, sirr (keep an ear out for thier night at the upcoming atlantic waves festival in london!), jewelled antler (from loren chasse's project of), as well as the long-awaited return of the italian project logoplasm on the ctrlaltcanc mp3 label (free download from their website!), and a framework intro recorded for us by long-time contributor adam wimbush.

so, yes, we're back on the air, and still accepting submissions for upcoming shows!  nows the time to send in your works, make a proposition for an edition of framework:afield, or record that intro you've been meaning to get to for years.  running very low on intros, please send them in!

"our first return to our standard format broadcast brought us a first delving into the pile of sounds that have backing up over the past several months while we've been working on the framework:focus shows - we listened to several tracks for the exquisite new cd by john hudak and stephan mathieu on sirr|ecords - in fact, with two copies of the album, we blended several of the tracks together to create a denser compressed version.  this weaved in and out of recent work by mnortham from a split cdr that also features a collaboration between tbc and brume (we'll hear sounds form that portion of the disc next time), documentation of wind sculptures by french artists eric cordier and denis tricot, vlf recordings on homemade equipment by james dunn, and overseas sounds by quiet american and american sounds (all recorded in savannah, georgia) by local (to this island, anyway) mark vernon."

this week we repeated an edition of framework:afield first aired on the 19th of may, 2006, produced in london, uk, by felicity ford (http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk).  i'm also forwarding on a call for participation for a field-recording related project from a fellow resfm program-maker - you can find the call at the end of this mail.  but first, from the original playlist:
"This edition of Framework has been put together by Felicity Ford of the littlesongbox and is a collection of recordings by both established and unreleased artists. Works here include recordings of children’s toys with musical mechanisms “playing,” a composition based on a woman humming along with her radio, an elderly woman singing and playing the piano, Hawaiian birds singing, the sounds created by a piano being tuned, ethnographic field recordings of sound mimesis from Tuva along with recordings of ice melting, swimming pools, computer games, church bells and, of course, some music boxes.

Much thanks to all the contributors for making such great work, for writing such friendly emails, for sending me CDs and for offering insight."

***important announcement***   this month resonancefm is moving to brand-spanking-new studio premises, a vast improvement over the space we have now.  this is a big job, however, and live programming will be suspended for until the job is finished (archive programming will continue).  for this reason, framework will also be taking a few weeks off, to recharge our engines, and restock our ears.  the next new edition should happen in september - stay tuned, we'll let you know!

in the meantime, however, we will continue to update the podcast weekly, with shows from our own archive.  have a look at the playlists online; if there's a particular show you'd like to hear, from anytime in framework's 500 (sorry, 5) year history, let us know, and we'll try to line it up in the next few weeks.

this week we repeated an edition first aired on the 12th of july, 2002, featuring a live studio performance by jonathan coleclough.  from the original playlist:

"I invited Jonathan Coleclough (whose name I was pleased to discover I've been pronouncing correctly all these years: rhymes with 'now' and not with 'cough') to join me this week and to bring along some selections of his own to play before the live set.  He then played a new piece, Halant, live, followed by a recording of a live duo with Aube earlier this year, and finished off with a live improvised duo with myself."

this week we repeated an edition of framework which first aired on the 15th of april, 2005.  from the original playlist:

"a great show this week focusing especially on the recently discovered (by me, anyway) work of australian sound artist lawrence english - two very different albums; one seemingly made up entirely of untreated hydrophone recordings, and the other full of lush tonal composition.  this mixed well with another binaural soundscape from prolific contributor dallas simpson, a look back at one of bernhard günter's compositions from a re-release of an early album, more untreated recording from autumn records (the same label as english's hydrophone...) by ben owen, and some greek rumblings from the ever-present antifrost label.  we also heard a few tracks from the album interview with the eggs, by simon keep, which we featured on the show as a cdr a few years back.  we are now pleased to announce it has seen the light of day as an official release, on the sub rosa label, no less, and it is well worth a listen..."

this week we repeated an edition of framework which first aired on the 2nd of may, 2003, featuring a live studio performance by jean-luc guionnet. from the original playlist:

"probably my favorite framework introduction yet began this edition, recorded here in london by melanie clifford and rob grant on scaffolding outside their window with a live mix of contact and condenser microphones.  beautiful!  we then delved back into the massive body of work produced by ward weis, before moving on to some recent works by slavek kwi, aka artificial memory trace.

however, the real highlight was a live in studio performance by jean-luc guionnet: composer, improviser, and collaborator with the likes of eric cordier and eric la casa, and their project afflux.  jean-luc performed a live improvised set of found sounds: some prerecorded (but unheard) sounds from his eurostar ride that morning, the others live on location, from a condenser mic out the window, to an array of contact mics spread across the studio and taped to clocks, amps, ventilators...  definitely amongst framework's most exciting moments."

this week we repeated an edition of framework which first aired on the 10th of january of this year, featuring the work of artists that i had the pleasure to meet and/or play with during my north american travels this past winter. from the original playlist:

"my first regular edition of framework in 2007 acts as a sort of activity report for my recent travels in north america.  the edition is constructed entirely from material produced by artists i've met in the past few months, in new york city, boston, montague and montreal, including many locals (howard stelzer, michael delia, brendan murray, ben owen, joda clement, magali babin) and quite a few other visitors as well (richard francis, campbell kneale, frans de waard, peter wright, anthony milton).  most is released material, although there are also the shadows of one live collaboration between frans de waard, howard stelzer and me.  there was a lot of ground to cover, so it's a pretty dense show - enjoy it!"

this week we repeated an edition of framework:focus which first aired on 17.12.04, featuring the work of jeph jerman. from the original playlist:

we sampled field recordings and compositions he has made over the years (both under his own name and as hands to) using typically inexpensive tape recorders and mics, giving his body of work a characteristic grainy, earthy sound.  this mixed with commentary and observation he recorded himself, on his work, sound in general, inspirations and anecdotes (we want a t-shirt with an anatomical drawing of an ear too)...  we think this is one of the best editions of framework:focus we've had the pleasure to produce yet...

so, on to the show!

some really wonderful works that have been waiting far too long in our 'to play' pile in this edition, including 2 exquisitely constructed works on the swedish komplott label, a collection of lost and forgotten works by our old favorite toy.bizarre, and a series of manipulated recordings from cathedrals and passage graves by baradelan.  toy.bizarre's sources for the pieces we're listening to include ants and hydroelectric powerstations (to cite the extremes), while hanna hartman's close-up mic'ing techniques reveal some amazing textures of voice, wood, and what must be the eating of an apple.  meanwhile  andreas bertilsson's delicate compositions stem from some potential haunting activity during the time of his residency at the studio - have these events informed his final product?  this was all begun with a framework introduction recorded for us by olivia swider.

this edition of framework:afield was produced in paris, france, by harold schellinx.  for more information see http://soundblog.net.

"BACK TO BERLIN - The Master of Germany"

In february of this year HarS went back to Berlin, to pick up tapes trashed in the streets, and to participate in Rinus van Alebeek's 'das kleine field recordings festival'. As always, in his pocket there was a dictaphone. And pinned to his jacket, there was a small microphone. And he recorded. Hours and hours and hours. But not the performances. And not the concerts. All of these recordings were made around it. On the way to a performance. Late at night out in Berlin streets; or in bars, long after the evening sessions had finished.

"Back to Berlin - The Master of Germany" is a one hour selection from these recordings, made especially for Framework: low fi field recording 'das kleine field recordings festival'. Thanks to all those that, knowingly or unknowingly, found themselves field recorded.

You can listen to the full 24/7 "Back to Berlin" audio webstream at http://raudio.nl, and read about 'das kleine field recordings festival' in the SoundBlog, at http://berlin.soundblog.net.

almost exclusively unreleased works in this edition, except for the final instalment of our focus on social interiors' cd on endgame records.  we played the entire cd over the last 4 regular editions, as it seemed so appropriate to us, this last track being the one collaboration between the 3 artists on the disc, after the 3 solo tracks we've heard over the last several weeks.

meanwhile this week we also featured the outcome of our listener participation project from a few weeks back.  you may remember my description of sebastiane hegarty's project, which involved sending several heavy pressed vinyl 7" records through the mail unprotected and sleeveless, and asking the receivers to make an ambient recording of the record and send it back to him.  well we decided to take this one step further and air our copy of the record on framework, asking listeners to make an ambient recording of the broadcast and send it back to us.  in this edition you'll find 4 such recordings, made in very different circumstances around the world.

along with these works we heard new unreleased material by marcelo radulovich (including a stunning piece of hurdy-gurdy manipulation), a recent sonic experiment by dallas simpson (that also originally included some filmed images), an exquisite collection of bowed metal fences by stephen cornford, and a framework introduction recorded for us by gordon tebo.

and speaking of which: framework's stock of listener provided introductions is running low!  if you enjoy the show, please consider contributing by recording your very own framework introduction - frame and fortune will follow!

some of you may have noticed that this edition didn't actually air at the appropriate time in the appropriate place on your fm dial - there were some technical difficulties at the studio.  but not to worry, you haven't missed your chance, as this show will now be available, as is every edition, for streaming and podcasting for the next seven days!  so now's your chance to make that virtual leap - isn't the internet wonderful?

it was probably my punishment for engaging in some blatant self-promotion, in the form of airing not one, but both sides of my own shiny new 7" vinyl record on germany's drone records, entitled 'in their homes and in their heads'.  it features heavily treated sound sources from a parisien apartment and a londonien secret garden, as well as a package with handmade paper (made by these very hands!) containing a smorgasbord of pulped personal items (including a summer's worth of hair, if you must know, and yes, only from my head).  so if that was my punishment, now i'm really doomed...

we also heard the 3rd of 4 tracks from the social interiors album 'spatial circumference', a solo yann novak work composed from the sounds of fans inflating 2 transparent vinyl houses (!), a sampling of the multiartist (ben owen, gill arno, andre goncalves, andy graydon, richard garet, and gil sanson) scored experiment that is ea, and another short recording from the french sound magazine sonatura.

and one more time: framework's stock of listener provided introductions is running low!  if you enjoy the show, please consider contributing by recording your very own framework introduction - frame and fortune will follow!  find guidelines below in this mail, or on our website.

this edition of framework:afield was produced in toronto, canada by michael trommer.  for more information see http://www.myspace.com/mtrommer.  michael says:
'i've basically contact mic'd the upstairs bedrooms and various parts of the house, including various appliances (ones that run day-round) and windows/backyard (for outdoor sounds). the idea was to do a live, real-time mix, processing the sounds of the sleeping family/house, and gradually lifting off...slowly separating to outdoor sounds, then to local radio sounds, longwave...mediumwave...shortwave....then finally to a live radiotelescope feed.

the idea is this gradual takeoff from a sleeping bed to deepspace...something that, when i was a kid, i sometimes used to think actually happened (i thought that my bedroom would kind of separate from the rest of the house and blast off into the cosmos when i fell asleep)(I don't think this anymore, btw)...a recent re-discovery of some of harris burdick's drawings made me want to do this...'

this edition of framework:afield was produced in budapest, hungary by henrik hargetai.  henrik says:
'This is a voyage through three ancient civilizations: first we go the most ancient one, the heart of Egypt. We visit Cairo and then leave for Luxor, over the bands of the Nile. From Egypt we go to another Islamic country, another former empire, Turkey. We first visit the calm city of Eskisehir, in the middle of Anatolia, and then we go to Istanbul, the city of Mosques. From here only a jump is Greece, the center of another religion. We climb to the Acropolis to listen to the sounds of Athens at 6PM, when bells  can be heard instead of the muezzin of the Islamic world. We are now back to our familiar Europe.'
for more information on henrik's many projects, see:

our latest regular edition, featuring more works from the 'nekton falls' compilations, and recent sounds from lawrence english, mystified, and joseph young.  we also heard the first of several long tracks we'll be listening to by the project social interiors, whose work some of you may remember from the australian extreme label from the 80's/90's.  this first release in several years (now on endgame records) features one solo track from each member of the collective, and a collaborative work, and instead of trying to feature a few short extracts, we thought, heck, we'll play them all, by spreading them out over several shows.  ie, it's good.  meanwhile, as promised, we gave a second chance for interested parties to participate on our listener participation segment, featuring the work of sebastiane hegarty.  once again, the details:

sometime last year i received an unsolicited heavy-pressed single-sided 7" vinyl record in the post.  no package, letter, sleeve, nothing - just a record with a stamp and my address on it, and a small sticker in the center with a request.  the request was that i play the record back in my home, record it ambiently, and return both record and recording to a specified address.  months later, i finally got around to doing this, and in the process thought, what better way to support this project than to broadcast the record on framework and call to arms all it's loyal listeners?  so that's what i've done: near the end of this edition (around minute 50, if you're downloading) you will find sebastiane hegarty's piece 'mo (nu) ment', which was recorded from his bedroom window during a 3 minute silence held for the victims of the asian tsunami disaster of 2005.  play it back over whatever speakers you have, record it with whatever you have at hand, and, dear listener, send it back to us here at framework.  if we get enough we'll broadcast a selection of them, and forward them on to sebastiane for his project.  so there you go.  to arms!

one other (very small) announcement: i'm trying out a new feature to the playlist, in the form of specific time details for the tracks played.  it is often pointed out to me that it's very hard, via the playlist, to tell what is what in the show, since rarely is a single piece broadcast on it's own, and all the playlist gives is track order.  now that you can download the show it occurred to me it might be useful to have specific start/end points for each track, to help you if you fancy trying to decipher what's what.  please let me know if this is at all useful to you - if no one's bothered, well then, it's less work for me not to bother either...

again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions.  we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest-curated series.  send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below.  if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

several great new (well, recent anyway - framework has been suffering from an excess of waiting material for a long, long time now) releases this week, and an exciting opportunity for listener participation!  if you missed the chance, fear not, we'll be repeating it in our next regular edition in 2 weeks time, or you can download or stream this edition from the website.  so you have no excuse!  i'll explain more in a moment...

we listened to several tracks from a 3cd compilation called 'nekton falls', which features many names framework listeners will recognise, and many that they won't.  too much on here to squeeze everything we wanted into one show, so we'll be coming back to hear a few more selections next time.  meanwhile, we heard two long excerpts from matt shoemaker's excellent release on the helen scarsdale agency, 'spots in the sun'.  this is really a wonderful disc - gritty, hunched over, dense textures and layers, just how we like it!  we also heard several tracks from another new name (for us), and a surprising name at that: herpes o deluxe provided us with some well constructed crunch.  all this along with a blending of two uk street scenes - we took rob grant's recording of london's green lanes and intertwined it with nick sellen's portrait of reading - can you tell which is which?

some background on our listener participation segment: sometime last year i received an unsolicited heavy-pressed single-sided 7" vinyl record in the post.  no package, letter, sleeve, nothing - just a record with a stamp and my address on it, and a small sticker in the center with a request.  the request was that i play the record back in my home, record it ambiently, and return both record and recording to a specified address.  months later, i finally got around to doing this, and in the process thought, what better way to support this project than to broadcast the record on framework and call to arms all it's loyal listeners?  so that's what i've done: near the end of this edition (around minute 50, if you're downloading) you will find sebastiane hegarty's piece 'mo (nu) ment', which was recorded from his bedroom window during a 3 minute silence held for the victims of the asian tsunami disaster of 2005.  play it back over whatever speakers you have, record it with whatever you have at hand, and, dear listener, send it back to us here at framework.  if we get enough we'll broadcast a selection of them, and forward them on to sebastiane for his project.  so there you go.  to arms!

this edition of framework:afield was produced in london, uk, by rob mullender.  of this edition rob says:

'"it's called 'have nagra - will travel' and is a tribute to the work of some of the great ethnographic recordists of the 20th century. without these people and the labels that released the material, much of this music which no longer exists would be lost....

...rather sadly i am a vinyl fan - the artefact has too great a hold upon me. i think with this stuff it's justified though. many of these records were intended for academic study and have fairly copious notes (especially the ocora ones - 5 page booklets in the gatefold). for me the most fascinating are hugo zemp's dan masque recordings. for the dan, the masque actors aren't just representing the spirits, they ARE the spirits ontologically speaking. the 'mask that eats water' is what the dan call 'a naked mask' - in other words completely auditory. it's a piece of bark over a hole with vegetable fibers poking through. water is poured onto the fibers (hence the name) and they are then rubbed with both hands.  in the 'long mask' recording, the voice of the spirit is altered by singing through a horn with a membrane over the end, which is hidden under the costume. i love the idea of an audio mask...

...maybe i should call it 'thousands of miles of tape' instead. it makes no sense, but i sort of like it. what do you think?"

again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions.  we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest-curated series.  send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below.  if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

we featured several pieces that are available online this week, with works on the zeromoon and test tube net labels, and gilles aubry's self-released document of a recent live performance.  we also heard a classic from the recently revitalised sonoris records, providers of this work by artificial memory trace, along with one of our all-time favorites, steve roden's 'the radio.'  also a postrain (that is, after the rain) recording by steve burnett, who also sent us a framework intro to follow in the coming months, and an intro this week by kevin lockwood.

but our feature this week was a live set recorded exclusively for us by rob curgenven and derek holzer, who are touring europe at this moment, and will be playing several gigs in the uk in the coming days.  some info on their uk dates:

apr 12 - klinker club, south london, uk, the ivy house pub, 40 stuart rd, se15
apr 13 - klinker club, north london, uk, the black horse, 37 wedmore st, n19

a shorter list this week, as we kept ourselves to five great releases that each deserved out full attention.  firstly, 23five has released a full disc of works by jean-francois laporte, including the exquisite mantra, which we originally featured on framework some years back when it was released on metamkine's cinema pour l'oreille series of 3" cds.  mantra is composed entirely from the sounds if a compressor on an ice rink, and its intensely complex patterns of stunning drones are a sound for sore ears.  we couldn't resist playing this again (although we rarely do repeats), especially in the company of two of the disc's other pieces, one composed entirely from stormy wind sounds, and the other making full use of the natural 15 second reverb inside an empty cargo hull.

we also heard 2 extracts from afflux's less-than-new release bordeaux tnt, constructed from the recordings of a 6 hour live performance in 2000 featuring their usual array of ambient mics and wire installations; 2 pieces from the italian artist hue's lovely and somehow somewhat narrative debut cd; a few end-on-end selections from the very active san francisco musician jefre cantu-ledesma's recent spekk cd, and 2 tracks from iland, the stunning work of two australian sound artists, thembi soddell and anthea caddy.  while this release might not technically qualify as field-recording (you may have noticed i'm getting much less strict in my old age), it's attention to space and resonance (certain sound materials were recorded in a reverb chamber, others in an anechoic chamber), not to mention it's intensity and beauty, qualified it enough for my ears...

this edition of framework:afield was produced in zurich, switzerland by jason kahn.  for more information see http://www.jasonkahn.net.  jason says:
"In the radio piece "Unheard Zürich" I interviewed people from Zürich about what their favorite sound or sounding place in the city is and made recordings of these places and sounds. I decided to have the people interviewed speak in their native language (Swiss German, Italian, English), as this also reflects the sound of Zürich. "Unheard Zürich" is another in my series of "Unheard Cities" works, where I investigate how people living in cities perceive the sounds around them.

this was our latest regular edition of framework, for which we had an extra pair of hands helping to pick the tracks visiting american sound artist katie gately, whose piece 'treepaint' you may remember from our last regular edition.  we waded our way through two wonderful (not so recent) releases from the naturestrip label is australia, toshiya tsunoda's most recent collection of sonic experiments 'scenery of decalcomania', and eugene carchesio and leighton craig's collaborative collection of outdoor instrumental improvisation, 'leaves'.  what's more, we made out way through bj nilsen and stillupsteypa's second collaboration on the helen scarsdale agency, heard a few compositions of alpine cablecar recordings by simon whetham, and continued our exploration of gruenrekorder's compilation 'recorded in the field by...'

our next 2 editions will feature a special two-part edition of framework:afield.  this time produced in berlin by radioincorrect's tobias luther, it is an extended survey of rinus van alebeek's recent 'das kleine field recordings festival', which took place in berlin earlier this month.  it features, on the 28th of february and the 7th of march, live recordings and interviews with the likes of rinus himself, jeff gburek, lasse-marc riek, paulo raposo, kate donovan, harold schellinx, gilles aubry, and rob curgeven.

this edition of framework:afield was produced in stockholm, sweden, by mathias josefson.  for more information on his work see http://www.mathiasjosefson.com.  mathias says:

"I have spent some time working and thinking about what to provide for the "framework:afield 2007" project and I ended up writing a small patch in max/msp that randomly selected excerpts from preselected soundfiles, which I felt had some connection to field recordings."

our latest regular edition of framework saw us focusing on an excellent phonographic compilation released by the german gruenrekorder label, 'recorded in the field by...'.  we'll be listening to more tracks from this release in the coming months, as i seem to have selected nearly all of them for airplay, more than i can squeeze into a single show.  we also heard sounds by the italian artist urkuma, a fine collection of watery waves by martin clarke, some unreleased works for installation by my dear friend mark schreiber, mnortham's tribute to his race-car driving father, and another sampling from the collaboration between maurizio bianchi, nobu kasahara and hitoshi kojo.  we finished up with a lovely almost-narrative piece by brooklyn-native and current seattle-residing artist katie gately.  meanwhile, resonancefm's fund-raising month ticks on, and i'm pleased to see we've raised nearly £5,000 through our website!  but that's still way off our £60,000 target, so if you haven't donated already, i remind you again:

this edition of framework:afield was produced in malaysia by yeoh yin pin.  for more information see http://www.emacm.org.  yin pin says:

'The selection is loosely based on an idea for a novella which never really got off the ground from a few years back. The main idea focuses on a solitary, nomadic and non-interventionist consciousness roaming various territories and sensibilities (affects, lives, dreams, livelihoods, etc.) that generally revolve around century old "subject matter" like Religion, Man, Culture, Being, Time, and Nature. Briefly, the narrative commences like any other typical existential search for an/the all-consuming Meaning but slowly turns into a discovery of and connection with Auditory Life in all its complexity and nuances.'

we also, again, have another very important announcement to make this week:

my first live edition of framework for 2007 (i'm not often in london these days) saw a nice mix of new sounds from the likes of jim haynes, emmanuel mieville, and maurizio bianchi with nobu kasahara and hitoshi kojo, along with recordings of live sets by both peter wright and my project, murmer.  these last two were in reference to tomorrow night's gig here in london, where peter and i will both be playing, along with local concrete laptop duo icarus.  if you're in town please some down and say hello!

so - my first regular edition of framework in 2007 acts as a sort of activity report for my recent travels in north america.  the edition is constructed entirely from material produced by artists i've met in the past few months, in new york city, boston, montague and montreal, including many locals (howard stelzer, michael delia, brendan murray, ben owen, joda clement, magali babin) and quite a few other visitors as well (richard francis, campbell kneale, frans de waard, peter wright, anthony milton).  most is released material, although there are also the shadows of one live collaboration between frans de waard, howard stelzer and me.  there was a lot of ground to cover, so it's a pretty dense show - enjoy it!
