21.12.08

this edition winds up 2008 for us here at framework.  so in this time of wind and snow (of constant grey drizzle, if you're here in northern france) we're sending you somewhere warmer.  ruben garcia (spain) and slavek kwi (currently residing in ireland) have together produced this edition of framework:afield, featuring the mamori sound project, a regular residency/workshop program organised yearly by francisco lopez in the amazonian rain forest.  there is, in fact, a group of artists there right now, including slavek himself, for the 2008 residency.  these recordings were made during last year's forays, and feature recordings, composition, insight and discussion with the participants and francisco.

we take a week off next sunday, the 28th, but we'll be back with our first new edition of 2009 on january 4th.  however, for those of you listening on radio zero, or via the website or podcast, we'll be putting out an archive show to fill the gap week, a special holiday blast from the past.

have a great new year, see you in the new one!

14.12.08

the last regular edition of this fine year of 2008 - we have one more show this year, our last framework:afield, coming next week, produced by ruben garcia and slavek kwi (who's project artificial memory trace, coincidentally, is also featured in this edition) and featuring the mamori sound project, an artist residency in the amazonian rain forest organised each year by francisco lopez.  a fine way to end the year.  meanwhile this week we explored the site specific recordings of murmur; please note the pair of u's therein!  this, for once, is not an exercise in self-promotion, this is in fact another murmur altogether, a group in the u.s. that records site-specific instrumental improvisations, for this album inside a fermentation tank in an old distillery.  these went well with another one of dan warburton's sound walks, the aforementioned artificial memory trace, and a few tracks from maine's enthralling crank sturgeon - i played a gig with matt earlier this year in paris and his performance was exceptional, and to my great pleasure there are a few tracks on the cdr he gave me that i could get away with playing on a field-recording radio show.

so - happy new year everyone!  here's to a fine 2009!

07.12.08

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in vancouver, canada, by meri von kleinsmid.  meri says:

The theme of this edition of framework is the five Chinese elements, or phases (also known as Wu Xing). They are: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. They are of ancient and modern philosophical importance.

Presented here are sound works that are literally or thematically connected to the elements. They are grouped in two cycles, which rotate in the order of the elements as listed above.

This programme was conceived and compiled by composer Meri von KleinSmid. (www.merivonkleinsmid.net)

30.11.08

this week we join the schedule at yet another independent radio station - we are pleased to now be a part of the line-up at radio campus, 92.1 in brussels!  they will be broadcasting framework on friday mornings at 1am (that is to say late night thursdays - don't get confused!) beginning with this edition, airing this coming friday, the 5th of december.  if you are involved with an independent radio station that might be interested in adding framework to their schedules, or if you know of one that you think should, drop us  a note!

this week we aired several collaborations - recordings by @c with vitor joaquim, rinus van alebeek with tibor macek, and the first document of a project i've been involved with for the last few years called revenant.  revenant is an open-membership project focusing on site specific actions, and for this action, made near the italian/slovenian border in 2006, participants included yannick dauby, olivier feraud, john grzinich, hitoshi kojo, and myself.  for more info have a look at http://www.revenantsound.net and http://www.prelerecords.com.

end shameless self-promotion.

one other idea i'd like to put forward - it's been many years since framework started the listener-recorded introduction initiative, and we now have upwards of 150 different intros recorded all over the world.  someone recently pointed out to me that i should make it clear that folks are also free to translate the introductory text into their native language.  so!  you'll notice that clarification now added to the introduction guidelines at the end of this mail - by all means, translate away!  framework now broadcasts in several different countries, let's go multi-lingual!

16.11.08

so - a small muck-up this week: in the confusion of my own muddled brain, i forgot to update to podcast and streaming files this last week, which i'm sure you were all very upset about, meaning that the show from 09.11 has been online for an extra week, while you've all been waiting patiently for the show from 16.11.  and now it's time to put up the show from 24.11!  well fear not, all has worked out for the best, as there was no new show this week, 24.11, as resonancefm had a special live studio performance on sunday night, and radio zero broadcast an archive show.  so!  that means i can put up the show from 16.11 now, leave it there for the next week, and nothing will be missed.  so that's what i'm doing.

did you follow all that?

on the 16th we heard some great new sounds from none other than our illustrious co-founder, mr joel stern, along with loren chasse, from joel's own naturestrip label.  two fine, fine albums.  this mingled with sounds of empty spaces recorded by noid, and the latest collection of untreated field recordings from gruenrekorder by tobias bolt.  next week will be another regular edition, featuring, i might add in a smattering of self-promotion, the first document of a project i've been working on over the last few years with the likes of john grzinich, yannick dauby, olivier feraud, and hitoshi kojo - revenant:topolo will be released at the beginning of december on eric cordier's prele label here in france (more info at http://www.prelerecords.com and http://www.revenantsound.net).

next week will also be the first show to be aired on our latest participating station, radio campus in brussels!  welcome to the team.  if you are involved in an independent radio station that might be interested in adding framework to its schedule, please get in touch!

09.11.08

this edition of framework:afield was produced in london, uk by antonis antoniou, and features three works: an exploration of the changes in the soundscape of his home town of nicosia, in cyprus; an acoustic exploration of his new home in camberwell, london, and and an electroacoustic treatment of a greek poem.  for more information see http://www.myspace.com/antonioua.

02.11.08

we've always been a sucker for those little 3-inch cds, and this week we heard a pile of them, all from the french cdr label taalem.  some familiar names (jgrzinich, spiracle, emmanuel mieville, christian renou - aka brume) and several new ones (at least to me - yui ondera, goose, hum) weaved together in what become quite a thick tapestry for a chilly autumn.

19.10.08

a more relaxed edition this week, with fewer and longer pieces.  we finally got around to listening to dallas simpson's environmental improvisation with flowerpots, as well as to leny puksar's scratchy snow recordings.  we also heard a few of dan warburton's soundwalks, and a few extracts from paul bradley's 2nd collaborative project with cria cuervos.  but also - some news!

this week framework has widened it's frame - it has been our hope and desire for awhile now to hear framework broadcast on more radio stations around the world, and this week that project begins.  while podcasting and streaming on demand are great (i know many of you listen that way) there's nothing like good old broadcast scheduling, and this week we begin our partnership with radio zero in lisbon, a long-time friend of resonancefm, and co-founding member of the radia network (http://radia.fm).  while framework will always keep resonancefm as it's homebase (and each edition will always broadcast first on resonance), we will now be broadcasting as well each thursday night at 7pm local time on radio zero in lisbon.  so this show, for the week or october 19th, will broadcast on radio zero on thursday , october 23rd.  our plan is to offer framework to many more independant radio stations as well, so stay tuned for an fm broadcast in your hometown!

radio zero is based in lisbon, portugal, and broadcasts on the internet from http://www.radiozero.pt.  if you're a new listener listening on radio zero, please drop us a note and say hello!

so - many apologies for the lack of communication these last few weeks.  since you last heard from me i have been in estonia, latvia, france, portugal, and now the u.s., so you can see how things get snowed under.  but here are the last several playlists - our two most recent regular editions and a repeat of a never-before-podcasted early edition of framework:afield, produced in nyc by ben owen.   his show featured a live performance from october, 2005, featuring a real-time mix of raw recordings by a collective of local phonographers.  for more information on ben and his work, see http://seasonalbk.net & http://benowen.org.

part of my recent travels included a trip to lisbon to participate in the radiaLx2008 radio art festival and meeting of the radia network, organised by paulo raposo and ricardo reis (of radio zero).  many thanks to them for a wonderful festival - if you don't know radia and radio zero already check them out: http://radia.fm & http:///radiozero.pt.

For the garden performance you will hear field recordings from sicily and calabria in southern italy.  the main sounds are a bell ringing inside a church, a group of women singing recorded from outside of a church, waves from the ionian sea recorded at foot level with a microphone on each leg, water drips from a 400 year old gutter in the town of Patti, and birds recorded through a bamboo fence in the palermo botanical garden.

well folks, welcome back to brand new framework broadcasting!  i'm sure you've all been pining for these missives over the last four weeks, but we hope you have also been enjoying the visits into our past as we've been broadcasting some historical archive shows.  now we're back, although 'back' is relative, since i'm actually still roaming, currently in estonia, just returned here from latvia, where i've been giving workshops and performances with john grzinich and maksims shentelevs.  meanwhile i'm reacquainting myself with my playlists and some great sounds; mpld's modified slide projectors, jeph jerman's recordings of pre-performance performance spaces, and several tracks from yann novak and jamie drouin's collection of snow.  meanwhile, there are some great new editions of framework:afield coming up, and one or two from way back that never got podcasted.  and now's the time to send in those intro recordings!  do it now!

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in the uk by duncan whitley and james wyness.  for more information see their websites at http://www.wyness.org and http://www.khora.org.uk.

Listening through Holy Week

The piece focuses on sounds recorded during Seville’s Holy Week processions in 2007 and 2008. The sounds of the processions are interleaved with unscripted (conversational) dialogue between the producers recorded during Holy Week 2008. The subjectivity of the conversational excerpts raises questions about the objectivity of recorded sound within the documentary process.

Taking the Holy Week processions of Seville as subject matter, the listener is invited to explore acoustic communication within a specific human social context. The piece sets out to reveal the underlying syntax of sound within processions: musical elements, symbolic uses of sound, aural and verbal cues, crowd dynamics and performance features.

The complete field recordings from which the submitted work draws are to be archived as a new collection by the British Library.

Whitley and Wyness began collaborating on the Seville 2007 project following a lengthy period of research. Their collaboration was based on a mutual interest in investigating archive and documentary forms through the medium of sound. This, combined with experience in different areas of sonic art research, led to the development of multi-channel field recording techniques adapted to the specific conditions of public processions.

For
Holy Week: Seville 2007 (scenes) Whitley and Wyness adopted the use of two customised portable and mobile field recording rigs. The recordists took up carefully selected positions on the streets which offered the flexibility of capturing both the larger movement of the processions through time and space and the minutiae of specific details.

so, my sincere apologies for the lack of time references in this playlist - i know how you all love that feature (right?) - but i had a mix up with my notes this week, so there you go.  lost in the void.  in any case we heard a lot of great sounds from a lot of great places, and first prize goes to whoever can recognise the mystery voice, going on about speakers and churches, in mabel tapia's intro.

the other announcement i have to make is that framework will be taking a well-deserved vacation for the month of august - there is one more show, on august the 3rd, which will be james wyness and duncan whitley's edition of framework:afield, constructed from recordings made over the last few years during seville's semana santa (holy week).  then we'll be relaxing in the sun (yeah, right) until early september - but fear not!  i wouldn't leave you with no ear-candy!  a series of repeats of immense historical interest has been arranged, taking us back in time in the framework tardis, beginning, the first week, in 2006, and ending later in the month all the way back in 2002 (did they even have electricity back then?).  the original dates will be on the website, so you can flip back though the yellowing pages of the the playlist archive and see which composers were already born by then.

and when we come back, all tanned and relaxed, we want to see a mountain of new framework intros waiting for us!  get out there, record, proclaim those few lines to the heavens, and send them in!  uncle framework wants you!

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in cleveland, ohio by david jensenius and features the crooked river songlines project.
for more information see http://www.crookedriversonglines.com.  about the project:

'Crooked River, 1st and 3rd persons is a 48-hour recording and broadcasting project that re-engages the multiple legacies of the Cuyahoga River - its industrial fires, marine life losses, engineers’ ambitions, immigrant dreams, serpentine navigations - with its contemporary forms of agency. The river’s complex template as an industrial, cultural and natural waterway is re-inscribed as a sonic wayfinding system through the city grid of downtown Cleveland and the venue of Ingenuity Festival 2008. This project in first and third person intertwines macro forces and events of this dynamic waterway with the performative dimensions of the festival, harnessing nimble recording and broadcasting technologies to enable new methods of dialogue. Participants encounter these dynamic flows of natures and cultures via radio broadcasts, eavesdropping and interactive landmarking, and collectively embody - and co-emerge with - the past, present and future Cuyahoga River.'

if you're confused (i'm sure you're not), yes, indeed, this is the 2nd regular edition program in a row, as i'm playing catch-up to get back on my normal schedule for framework:afield after a week off a few weeks back.  that didn't make any sense, but i'm sure you don't care.  suffice it to say next week will be our next :afield program, which has been produced by david jensenius and features his crooked river project.

this week we listened to a 2nd batch of tracks from gruenrekorder's autumn leaves compilation, along with tracks from one of our most consistent contributors, adam wimbush, under his ascoms moniker, and new work on the french baskaru label by yoshio machida.  all this, and a framework intro by joseph young to boot.

a long, long list of tracks this week as we finally start delving into gruenrekorder's free mp3 compilation, autumn leaves.  it's long, great, and free - go download!  meanwhile we'll be sampling more from it's depths next time.

we also heard several tracks from justin bennett's wildlife cd, all recordings made in zoological and botanic gardens.  along with this we partook of two tracks from american composer nicholas szczepanik (pronounced [sa'-panic] apparently, and not [shuh-che'-panic] as i attempted on air), and a framework introduction recorded by mathias josefson, otherwise known as moljebka pvlse.

now then, whereas next week should be our next edition of framework:afield, in fact it should not, and therefore won't be.  this is to do with an uninteresting story of how we decided to proceed a few week's ago when we skipped a week for the resonance 10th anniversary celebrations, and now we've changed our minds.  fasciniating, no?  so: all this means is that this coming week will be a second regular edition in a row, and our next :afield, featuring david jensenius' crooked river project, will be on july 20th.

this edition of framework:afield was produced in italy by carlo giordani, and it a sonic tour of his hometown, lovere.  a brief biography and some links for further into on carlo's work here:

"Carlo Giordani is an electronic engineer working in the field of the Information and Communications Technology. He is the head of the Open Systems Division of Cortis Lentini, a software house based in Bergamo. His task is to coordinate the work of Project Managers and to provide consultancy (databases tuning and sizing, local and geographical network design, software development methodologies).

Before this, he was a geophysicist, developing signal processing software and electromagnetic field-handling algorithms, and was a designer of industrial software.

Besides his technical training, he has been interested in photography and sound since 1980. He looks to extract from everyday life, unexpected and quaint sounds, to produce emotions from the construction of a sonorous landscape that is behind the everyday hidden sounds which we are conditioned to ignore."

a week off last week, as resonance104.4fm celebrated the 10th anniversary of it's first appearance, as resonance107.3fm in 1998.  but we're back this week with our latest regular editions, featuring a 2nd collection of recordings from dan crall's self-released recluse abandon cdr, compositional work from robert dow and matt shoemaker, and z'ev's 'recoding' of original field recordings by frans de waard.  in next week's edition of framework:afield we'll have a sonic tour of the village of lovere, italy, by resident sound artist carlo giordani.

n.b.  there will be no new edition of framework next week, the 15th of june, as resonancefm will be celebrating it's 10th anniversary with a week of programming culled from 1998's brief stint as resonance107.3fm.  we will return with a new program on sunday, the 22nd of june.  this also means that the current edition, john grzinich's edition of framework:afield, will be available on the website for an extra week.

this edition was produced in nodar, portugal, by john grzinich, during a recent residency at binaural media.  for more information see http://maaheli.ee, http://maaheli.ee/main/archives/197, and http://www.binauralmedia.org.  all recordings are raw and untreated.

in this edition we featured 3 released and 2 unreleased works:  in the released camp we heard jacob kirkegaard's series of harmonic room feedback sessions (a sort of 'i am sitting in a room' for ambient spaces) recorded in various sites in the village of chernobyl), a collaboration between ralf wehowsky (rlw) and the transindustrial toy orchestra (tito), and a free mp3 release through ben owen's addenda series (which i see now has had a very limited release as well as a special edition enhanced cd) of jeremy slater's japanese rain-on-tin-can recordings.  in the unreleased camp we heard a series of raw field recordings (including a fantastic narrative by a resident of chitwood, oregon - we'll hear some more from this disc next time) by dan crall, and a mysteriously unlabeled cdr of slowly building wind drone by french artist strom varx.  all this opened for us with a framework intro recorded by british designer philip marshall in paris.

a long, long list of tracks this week, including several web-vailable works, a handful of actual shiny plastic discs, and some recent variously located field recordings by yours truly.  all of grant finlay's recordings are available on his new zealand nature sounds blog, and shinkei's collection of bio-electric recordings is available for free download as an mp3 release from trans>parent radiation, a sub-label of bremmstrahlung recordings, josh russell's label which brought us the original lowercase-sound compilations all those hundreds of years ago (ok, 4 or 5. 6? 7?).  meanwhile socrates martinis' project based on recordings of airplanes in the distance will see a vinyl release shortly as a greek.english co-production between entr'acte and absurd.  the autistici release (probably the 1st 12k release we've played on framework) features a collection of nice photos by taylor dupree, and a first collaboration from seth nehil and brendan murray appears on the always impressive sedimental records.

this edition of framework:afield has been produced by gilles aubry and stephane montavon.  for more info see http://www.soundimplant.com.  about the piece:

« Camp Victory » is a collaborative work between composer Gilles Aubry and writer Stéphane Montavon, both from Switzerland. This piece is a radio version containing excerpts from a 2005 live performance and parts which were recorded previously in the countryside in Switzerland.

The main source for the text were blogs and war reports by American soldiers collected by the authors on the internet. In addition, fragments of diaries written by French soldiers during WWI and quotations of Slavoj Zizek’s « Welcome to the Desert of the Real » have also been used. Once collected, the texts have been freely adapted and transformed using various techniques, such as translation into French, cut-up writing, and random text generators. The final result was then recorded by the authors and guest voices as a four-track tape composition, together with additional sounds. For the live version of
« Camp Victory », the composition was played over headphones to four performers with a different track for each. The performers were asked to repeat the words and sounds they heard as best as they could, while the sound of the original composition remained hidden from the audience.
The title of the piece,
« Camp Victory », refers to the biggest US military base in Baghdad, hosting twelve thousands soldiers.

Stéphane Montavon, born 1977, is currently a researcher at the Iconic Criticism Institute Eikones in Basel and teaches French literature at Basel University. As an experimental writer he has published poetry and essays in various magazines and on the Internet.

Gilles Aubry, born 1973, is a sound artist and composer living currently in Berlin. He uses field recordings, computer programming, interviews and improvisation to create live performances, sound installations and CD works. His musical work has been published on Absinth Records, Creative Sources, Cronica Electronica, Schraum, Conspiracy, Sound Implant and broadcasted on several independent radios.

Comment by Gilles Aubry on Camp Victory :

« The invasion of Iraq by the coalition’s troops started on the 20st of March 2003. I remember that day very well and how I was shocked. We had been following on TV the preparation of the war for the past six months, with its permanent flow of propaganda including speeches by president Bush and Tony Blair, General Colin Powell’s presentation to the United Nation Security Council, staged images of aircraft carriers in the sunset, and the powerlessness of worldwide protests. When the invasion finally started I became speechless, silence being the only option remaining after the liquidation of my remaining few illusions not only about democracy and justice, but also about the power of reason, art, and the history lessons to have contributed to a somehow civilised society. Later on I discovered the existence of blogs on the internet by American soldiers and became fascinated by their dispassionate, cold-blooded tone while reporting on their daily-life in Iraq. As I was asked to compose a new piece for a festival in Switzerland in 2005 I decided to use these texts as main source material.
« Camp Victory » is not a piece about the war in Iraq, but rather a reaction and commentary on its mediatization and on the discourse underlying its justification. It should be made clear that all the violence displayed in the piece is addressing the discourse of the invaders themselves and their societies, since the invaded populations were not given a voice from the beginning. »

The four performers for the live version were :

- Roberto Garieri
- Dave Phillips
- Antoine Chessex
- Christian Wolz

Additional voices for the radio version :

- Gilles Aubry
- Stéphane Montavon
- Didier Chappuis
- Eveline Odermatt
- Derek Shirley

after an intro recorded by regular contributor (look our for his latest edition of framework:afield, coming soon to a central heating system near you) adam wimbush, we limited ourselves to only 3 shiny disks this week, although this involved a few more than 3 artists, as one of the shiny disks is a compilation.  heizung raum 318 is the product of several years of meeting in room 318 (i have, in fact, been there myself) at hamburg university, in order to listen to and discuss various musics and sonic arts.  of course, when you fill a room with people who like to listen, those people will invariably start to listen to the room itself, and so room 318's faulty heating system was discovered, as well as the fact that this system could actually be 'played', enticing contrasting tones from the release valves or multiple radiators.  source recordings were made and shared out, and this compilation is the result.  we've featured work from each artist, as well as (the last several minutes of this edition) the original source material.

we also heard a series of untreated field recordings by eric cordier, including several that were made during visits to japanese volcanoes.  these recordings were interspliced with several sonic postcards from my fun (justin hardison) from his release sonorine, based on the first world war-era gramophone-style 'postcards' of the same name.

and for the record: we have gone back and forth over the years with including artist contact addresses in these playlists, but due to their increased visibility and reproduction on the net, we now think this is to risky, from a spam-prevention point of view.  we will from now on only be including website into for contributors, but if you would like to get in contact directly with any artist featured on framework, get in touch with us directly and we will do our best to put you in touch.

another hefty list of tracks this week, featuring a brand-spanking new release (and their first at that) by french artist yannick dauby 's kalerne label, marc namblard 's exquisite recordings of a frozen lake surface. we also heard a collection of field recordings by london-based polish artist rafal fletjer , including a very eerie istanbul capture of a man praying and weeping. and if that isn't international enough for you, we continued with artists from malaysia and lithuania...

and continuing in the vein of internationality, next week's framework:afield is entitled continental in(div)isibility , and has been produced for us in portland, oregon by tj norris.  until then, visit the website to listen to the current edition at any time!

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in porto, portugal by crónica electronica.  for more information see http://www.cronicaelectronica.org.

"A Chronicle of Crónica, around 5 years of it.

Mixed by Pedro Tudela and Miguel Carvalhais in February and March 2008.

We started Crónica in 2003. Originally intending to release both our work and that of a relatively close group of friends and artists, we have since produced and released work from artists a bit from all over the world. Along the way, we have been finding unexpected points of contact between the work of all those that have thus far collaborated with Crónica and what was once perhaps a small group has now grown to a much larger collective.

The mix we produced for this broadcast presents music that Crónica has released or is about to release, looking back to the first five years and simultaneously ahead to what we can only hope is a much longer time."

a look at a label new to us here at framework this week: france's fissür label, first conceived to release the (excellent) works of it's founder, (thomas tilly), and now branching out for the first time as well with a disc by long-time framework favorite jeph jerman.  we also heard a few recent releases from heribert friedl's nonvisual objects label (including tomas phillips' reworking of, ahem, 'field recordings' - there, that justified playing that one - of everyone's favorite old dc hardcore album by rites of spring.  remember them?), a very limited vinyl only release by moljebka pvlse's mathias josefson, and a series of unreleased recordings from the everglades national park in florida by joshua manchester (who, despite my feeble brain's repeated attempts to convince me otherwise, is not from manchester, england or rhode island).  this all began with a framework introduction recorded for us in a snowstorm in tartu, estonia, by laura paju and sven vabar (lots of writings on sven's website - but only if you read estonian, i'm afraid).

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in birmingham, england, by martin clarke.  it will be available online for streaming or podcast until 06.04.08.  for more information see http://www.rockscottage.net.  martin says:

"This is a collection of sounds recorded in the Shetland Islands: from singing seals
on a still summer's day to gale force winds blowing through fences in dark winter."

a rather ethereal edition of framework this week, featuring exclusively submissions that came to me through the ether, or rather, through the broadband cables of north-eastern france.  all work featured is either unreleased or accessible (in the case of tom wallace, tom player and coeval) for free via the internet.  this edition also featured some rather narrative content, from the show's backbone, built from fragments of romanian artist maria balabas' kafkaesque documentary audio collage about the greatest crime in the history of german public transportation, to tom wallace's introduction to his piece about haemodialysis, to michael ruesenberg's appreciation of a london rubbish collector.

another long list of tracks this this week as we slowly work our way through masses of material - if you've sent material in and have yet to see it appear in a playlist, please bear with me, i will get to everything eventually.  i prefer to take it slow and give everything the time it deserves, hence my habit of playing several pieces from a single submission, and limiting each edition to a handful of artists.

this edition saw us returning to a couple of older works (bruno moreigne's 1997 kaon release, and a beautifully presented book and cd from giancarlo toniutti and seigmar fricke from the same year), and discovering one new name (aeris ash, a side project of another new name for us here at framework, jason corder's off the sky).  also: the first full-length solo release from latvia's maksims shentelevs, some more work from britain's simon whetham, a collaborative work from france's emmanuel mieville and eric cordier, and an intro recorded for us by sweden's anders ostberg.  quite an international edition!

again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions.  we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series.  send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below.  if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

02.03.08

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in pasadena, california, by steve roden.  for more information see http://www.inbetweennoise.com.  steve says:

"a strange wonderful sound filled the room, a sort of singing, though
accompanied by words, was so supernaturally soft and touching that you could
not believe it came from a human throat... "
gerhart hauptmann, the fool in christ.

for this show, i simply wanted to present some of my favorite 78's. i've
included not only songs, but 78's containing fabricated field recordings
(nature sounds made by people in a recording studio), and a recent recording
of spoken excerpts from gerhart hauptmann's novel "the fool in christ" that
describe sounds (kind of a written equivalent of audio field recordings -
and an excerpt from a larger text work recording every sound in the book).

the songs were chosen because of their relationship to the hauptmann quote
above - and each track has singing that for one reason or another, makes me
tremble. the weather sounds are pauses - stopping by the side of the road to
take in the view - while the text is kind of an architectural structure that
frames the older recordings. after selecting the parts, i just allowed
things to collide in various ways until it felt right.

the order of the songs has a bit of an upwards trajectory - beginning with a
john jacob niles rendition of a lullaby (birth/earth), and ending with a
song that references the moon. songs were recorded in the usa, japan,
turkey, greece, egypt, and others. they explore everything from meditations
and prayers, to love and wandering. the players are hillbillies, divas,
hawaiian guitarists, gurus, gospel singers, the most famous male indian
playback singer, and others.

everything, other than the voice reading the text, comes from old worn 78rpm
discs. one features weather sounds made with drums, metal, etc., while the
other features bird songs made by a man (presumably with his mouth). the
scratches, scars, and crackles tend to sound a bit like weather conditions
as well (and in one section the sound of rain is completely inaudible
beneath the similarly sounding active surface of the record itself.)

i've been collecting 78's for years, but i've hardly gathered the caliber of
material that would constitute a bonafide record collector's collection. for
me, the gathering has become a journey of wander, leading to various
destinations of wonder. i don't look for specific artists or genres
(although, i have tendencies of course), as much as i kind of bump into
things - during weekly 6 am visits to the flea market or late night virtual
jaunts online. i generally have little idea of what i'm going to hear until
i drop the needle onto the surface of the disc. often enough, a recording
will be unbearably dull (what can you expect when purchases are based on a
song title, artist name, or disc label art); but when there are surprises,
they tend to be good - and once in awhile, mind bending. these are some of
the gems.

for the geeks, here's pertinent info:

another long playlist this week, coupled with some particularly long titles care of our friend the beautiful schizophrenic.  we heard sounds from his latest (one track a remix by compatriots @c), as well as recent sounds from gogoo, frans de waard and paul bradley.  this was held together by a framework (ahem) of tracks from gruenrekorder's compilation of untreated field recordings entitled 'rhythm' - you can guess what the theme is here.  and it all began with an intro recorded for us by boston-based (my home town!) artist ben rossignol.

a long playlist this week, featuring quite a mix of new and old sounds - we looked back at two past favorites this week, with tracks from coelacanth (jim haynes' and loren chasse's  collaborative project) and illusion of safety.  we also heard a few more tracks from michael prime's latest release, 'borneo', a sampling of a very new direction for sawako on her recent 'madoromi' release, a new track by mark schreiber (when will he have a proper release, we wonder...), a series of field recordings from france and china by aymeric de tapol, and a recent mp3 release by kim cascone.

in the midst of all this was an interesting project that came our way from the royal university college of fine arts in stockholm sweden - on the initiative of professor carl michael von hausswolff, six students (amongst which i see the name of one mathias josefson, aka moljebka pvlse) and their professor each recorded a single lock groove, which were released as one side of a 7" record.  here we hear the 2nd side - a mix of all 7 tracks by professor micki himself.  for specific information and ordering info have a look at the website, listed in the playlist below.

03.02.08

this week's edition of framework:afield was produced as a collaboration between japanese sound artist rie nakajima, london-based piano tuner ken bodden, and yours truly.  it is based on an installation nakajima made using recordings of bodden at work - she followed him to several jobs, made close up recordings of the tuning process, and played the recordings back, one per speaker, simultaneously in a single room.  the ensuing collage, far from cacophonous as one would expect, follows a beautiful progression of harmonics and crescendos, and creates surprising tonal patterns as bodden makes his way through the scale.  when i heard the piece, i knew it needed to be broadcast.  for the radio we took the project one step further, conducting a series of interviews with bodden in which he describes in detail the tuning process (much of which, to the uninitiated, is difficultly understood, but fascinating in its complexity), his history as a tuner, and his interest in nakajima's project, while nakajima herself describes her conception of the piece, and her initial fascination when she was made aware of the commonality of blind piano tuners in the uk.  this is really a fascinating piece - if you don't listen to the show regularly, here's a good place to start.

this week's edition features recent sounds by richard garet, rinus van alebeek, and john wynne, and old track from toy.bizarre, recently released by kokeshidisk, a raw field recording from tom hall in australia, and an intro recorded for us in the u.s. by steve burnett.  all this was strung together with several extracts (or rather, the entire piece, but divided into several pieces) of a live recording from this year's 'das kleine field recording festival' by yehlin lee, otherwise known as TSU, or the taipei sound unit.  lee has been in europe for awhile, and i've run into his on a few different occasions in a few different countries, and had the pleasure of hearing this live performance at rinus' (also featured in this show - six degrees of what?) festival, where i was also performing, this past august - there are some beautiful and very evocative recordings in this mix, all made in taiwan, and the piece is available for free download from lee's site: http://rio.recorderz.com.

so it's 2008, and once again, i'm looking for new propositions for editions of framework:afield, our series of guest-curated shows.  57 minutes, all for you, to create a unique piece of radio art - if you're interested in making a proposition get in touch and i'll send you the details!

this edition of framework:afield was produced in brooklyn, new york, by katie gately.  katie says:

'i have manipulates a number of my own field rec`ordings and blended them with other works that i like.  the victims include: hildegaard westerkamp, dion workman, doug haire, spencer fuller, rob millis, perri lynch, toby paddock, chris delaurenti, mark griswold, steve barsotti, conor gately and craig downing.  my goal was to make something shadowy and dynamic.'  the piece finishes with '...some spontaneous "musc"....the ny times building....an interview....a dryer filled with sneakers....a buzzer and monks!'

welcome to the first new edition of framework of 2008!  we are now entering our 7th calendar year of broadcasting, if you can believe that, and still going strong.  we've got some great programming coming up in the next several months, as we work our way through a huge pile of great recent submissions, and make our way through a great lineup of new framework:afield submissions...

so we started 2008 off with a focus on a (relatively) new french label, ferns, whose catalog is made up entirely of those fetish-inducing little 3" cds (we heard one of their early releases awhile back in the form of mnortham's go) - releases from giancarlo toniutti, joe colley, daniel menche and toy.bizarre, and wonderful pieces, all of them.  we also finally got around to broadcasting some sounds by a true old favorite, the french masters of environmental construction, etant donnes.  we heard several tracks from an early ep, royaume, released as one of touch's first publications in 1991 (nearly 20 years ago!  yikes!).  so an accidental french theme this week; appropriate, i suppose, as i have just returned to france after a month in the uk.  i'll be sneaking some more etant donnes into broadcasts in the coming months as well...

so it's 2008, and once again, i'm looking for new propositions for editions of framework:afield, our series of guest-curated shows.  57 minutes, all for you, to create a unique piece of radio art - if you're interested in making a proposition get in touch and i'll send you the details!

so - i know i promised to give you podcast subscribers several archive shows over the holiday period, but in the end framework took a much needed break to recharge it's batteries in front of the fire with a large glass of port (well, there was no fire, except in the pub, but there was port, and whisky, and wine...). i will, however, give you at least one edition before we go back to new programming, since we're in the new year now, and making resolutions and all.  so this week i'm giving you one from the archives, november 11th, 2005, produced during a visit to the limousin region of france, and featuring works by felicity ford, daisuke suzuki & brendan walls, punck, keith de mendonca, eric leonardson, simon vincent and darren tate.  hope you enjoy it.

we'll be back to new programming, and fm broadcasting, next week, that's sunday the 13th of january, MMVIII, at our new time of 10-11pm.  have a great start to 2008!
