27.12.09

well folks, it's the last show of the year, and, believe it or not, the last show of our framework250 celebrations.  this edition, as was the first edition of these celebrations, is solid framework250 tracks, 8 in all, which all feature on the compilations which will be ready for posting within a few weeks.  i am silkscreening the covers as i type, and they look great!  so if you haven't already - click on eof the buttons to the right, donate, and reserve yourself a copy of one or both of these great compilations!  we hope this project will be a success - if it is, there are ideas wafting around about making framework a regular publication outlet, perhaps with a quarterly review or somesuch - we'll see.  but these comps will have to go in order to make that possible, so if you'd like to see framework publish more, help us out!

we hope you have a wonderful finish to 2009, and all the best for 2010!  we'll see you in the new year!

South Hill Park Arts Centre is based in a large Georgian mansion house, 25
miles West of London, in Berkshire, UK

In Autumn this year, the media lab at South Hill Park, UK hosted the “Digital
Developments” season of creative technology workshops.

Sound artist, Janek Schaefer led a weekend workshop with the title “Found
Sound Stories” where he introduced participants to his way of working with
vinyl, found sounds, field recordings, digital effects and looping.

The participants spend two days recording and playing with sound
manipulation techniques on a large array of devices, ending with the series of
duo and trio performances which were recorded to make up the first half of
this programme.

Further pieces were contributed after the weekend from Thea Stallwood,
Felicity Ford and Margaret Marks. The opening and closing sections of this
programme are compositions by Janek Schaefer, made during and shortly
after the weekend.

framework250
tracks this week from maria balabas (romania), steve roden (america), martin clarke (uk) and john grzinich (estonia), along with an intro by diemo schwarz and works by joe stevens and gilles aubry.  as the year draws to a close we are approaching the end of our framework250 celebrations - the last show for this extremely extended birthday party will be the first for the year 2010, and also the date we plan to begin shipping the
framework250 compilations.

yes, that's right, compilation*s*, plural!  we received so much great material for the project that the only reasonable solution was to produce 2 double disc releases rather than just 1, so the framework250 compilation will be available in 2 separate editions.  donors can choose between them, or for a minimum donation of
€40 we'll send you both.  full tracklists are now available on the website:  http://www.frameworkradio.net/framework250.

29.11.09 (#260)

more framework250 tracks this week, this time from jean-luc guionnet, felicity ford, toshiya tsunoda, and loren chasse.  a few more of these programs to go (3 more after this one) and then we'll be ready to release the framework250 compilation.  a few surprises in store regarding that, as you may have noticed that we've got way too much material in the project to fit on 2 cds.  but more news on that as things become more concrete.

we also heard sounds in this edition from alexandr vatagin, from his short release shards, and from another collaboration between bj nilsen and stillupsteypa, this time on the editions mego imprint.  all this began with a framework introduction recorded for us by joe stevens.

speaking of which - as goes my usual plea: we are running low on introductions!  now is the time, if you've been meaning to get out there and record us a framework introduction - do it!  now!  guidelines at the end of this mail.

22.11.09 (#259)

this edition of framework:afield was produced in the uk by regular series contributor felicity ford, and features a framework-specific mix and edit from her radio series the fantastical reality radio show.  felicity says:

The Fantastical Reality Radio Show in association with Mundane Appreciation was commissioned by RadioReverb as part of the Sonic Arts Network Expo 2008. It was originally hosted in Brighton by Earshot and aired on Radio Reverb during the Summer of 2008.

All 5 shows can be downloaded in their entirety from the show's website at http://www.fantasticalreality.com/home.html

The show was the concept of Felicity Ford, Kayla Bell and Claudia Figueiredo. Aiming to draw listeners in to an entertaining exploration of ordinary audio, The Fantastical Reality Radio Show in association with Mundane Appreciation was based on using the immediate situation or vicinity as a basis for artmaking, and was intended to celebrate and draw attention to the sounds we hear all the time. All the sounds were recorded by Felicity Ford, Kayla Bell and Claudia Figueiredo, and friends of Kayla Bell make guest appearances in many of the show's popular jingles!

The Fantastical Reality Radio Show appropriated the format of a mainstream radio show and populated it with unexpected content. Adopting a fast-paced, OTT, jingle-tastic approach, the show was filled with gameshows and features all focussed around the appreciation of everyday sounds.

Felicity Ford is currently undertaking a PhD in The Domestic Soundscape and presenting everyday sounds to audiences, while Kayla Bell and Claudia Figeuiredo continue to collaborate on their ongoing project, Mundane Appreciation.

This special edition of The Fantastical Reality Radio Show in association with Mundane Appreciation has been put together for Framework from the archives used to make the original 5 shows. There are some longer edits here and much of the voiceover that was used to connect up the features in the original shows has been removed, to make way for the features, the games, and - most importantly, the sounds - that made up that series. However, the fun approach, fast-pace and celebratory atmosphere have been retained for the listening pleasure of all Framework listeners!

15.11.09 (#258)

continuing out slow release of the exclusive tracks that will make up the framework250 compilation at the end of this year - in this edition we heard tracks from scott sherk , giancarlo toniutti, keith de mendonca, and michael northam.  in fact, we received so many contributions for this fund-raising project that we have far too much material for the 2 cds we planned for the compilation.  so!  keep your ears peeled for news in the next few weeks - it's very possible (although at this point i promise nothing) that we will be producing *2* independent 2cd compilations!  yes, that's right, 4 cds in all of works made in support of framework and our continuing efforts to bring new sounds to your ears.  these plans, or some other plan, will be finalised, officialised, and producified shortly.

some more info on this weeks' contributions:

scott sherk  /  victor's lament - "It's my recording of the steel sculpture Victor's Lament by Mark Di Suvero.  I find it interesting that Philip Glass wrote a peice based on the sculpture also called Victor's Lament.  I recorded the sculpture in a heavy wind storm usind homemade piezo contacts with a diy buffer box.  I recorded in stereo with one piezo on the cables and one on the steel."

giancarlo toniutti  /  chooramuukk, girasrum (copper-nose, iron-hat) - "Sounds: vine rows field-recorded in Orsaria (Friuli), 7.5.08; wood-scraped cast irons recorded in Udine 1.9.09, environmental whistlings recorded in Udine, 1. & 10.9.09.  Studio work (analogic treatment and filtering) and digital mix down, black room studio september 2009.  Digital mastering: giorgio tomasini.  title is in Malayalam, Dravidian langauge spoken in Kerala, southern India."

keith de mendonca  /  four nights in lhasa - "I made a short visit to Lhasa in August 2009 to celebrate my birthday - which fortunately coincided with a large local festival in and around the capital. This festival attracted a huge number of people into Lhasa from surrounding areas - adding to the air of excitement and celebration found in the temple fairs, monasteries, and around the old part of the city (as well as an increased military presence on the streets). "Four nights in Lhasa" presents my impression of the festivitives, the celebrations and the religious devotion I witnessed in Tibet during this brief moment of time."

michael northam  /  kashi - heatdream - (no further info - "tell me what you hear")

we also heard a series of electromagnetic recordings in this edition from the canadian project absolute value of noise, and several compositions by american-born, european-based (previously germany, currently poland) artist jeff gburek (of whose name, evidently, we had to guess the pronunciation).  all this, plus another framework introduction by french artist cedric anglaret.

08.11.09 (#257)

this edition has been produced in the uk by karen lauke.  for more information see http://www.karenlauke.com.  karen says:

"The programme is being produced with special thanks to Steve Brown and Ewan Stefani who kindly allowed me to interview them about their use of field recordings in their design and compositional works.

Being a designer and composer myself I was interested to see to what extent both the theatre and the experimental music disciplines used field recordings so I could compare this to my own work.

Cities of Sound is a sonic exploration of the field recordings I have managed to collect over the past few years from different places and countries I have visited. I was very interested in bringing all the sounds together to produce an almost immersive soundscape.

Something I am very interested in examining at the moment is the relationship that field recordings can have in different places within musical composition. I have some extracts to play of an interview I conducted with Steve Brown who is a theatre sound designer at the royal exchange theatre in Manchester, Steve is also head of sound at the international organisation OISTAT. I am also going to play an interview conducted with Ewan Stefani who is a lecturer at Leeds University and an electroacoustic and acousmatic composer.

One of the main aspects I set out to achieve by conducting interviews between a theatre sound designer and electroacoustic composer was to see whether there were any similarities in the way that they used field recordings in their work

Ewan and Steve are both responding to questions I have asked them throughout my interview with them and at the end are responding directly to my question of where is sound design and electroacoustic music going in the future and are there any similarities to their respected fields to one another's.

Comparing the work produced by Ewan and Steve to my own work I can see many similarities in the way of style and format. To me the discipline of being an electroacoustic, acousmatic or experimental composer doesn't differ or vary much to the work I carry out to a sound designer. I use field recordings quite heavily in my work whether design related or composition related. They have become more and more frequent over the years and now feature quite dominantly in my work.

I am very interested in organic field recordings and in the association sound can have with space and location. My recent work has developed into more site specific exhibition and installations.

Working as both a composer and sound designer I am very interested in examining the connections between the two disciplines and how a composer might see him or herself as a designer when using fields recordings and sound in an experimental way and how a sound designer might relate to themselves as a composer because of the way they are structuring and composing a musical piece.

I have recently been involved in composing and producing a piece titled Memories Unearthed which was an outdoor sound installation at a country park in Salford, Manchester.

Memories Unearthed is an experimental soundscape which was produced by using various field recordings that were taking from the park in Salford and fused alongside various recordings I have produced and reproduced that would have been associated with a colliery that was once based in the area, namely the Wet Earth Colliery. The installation was produced for an event titled Dirt and Dreams which commemorated the work of those that worked in the mining industry.

The environmental field recordings specifically heard at the beginning and end of the piece were produced with the help of local children and families that came along to a workshop that was run in the park and involved them participating in a soundwalk around the area. Recordings were made and I tried to incorporate as many as possible into the piece."

25.10.09 (#255)

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in udine, italy by giancarlo toniutti.  for more information you can see his website (still under construction) at http://www.quasi-rn.org.  giancarlo has this to say about his show:

This radio work has been conceived as an ambient form of narration. The idea was to take the recorder with me, while walking late at night through different environments. Mostly habitual environments. But while nightwalking I discovered more interesting "location" sounds, than anything else, and turned the project into a resonance-oriented gathering of different specific local events, bounded by a narrative structure. These "local" events had to do with three main categories of sonic phenomena: ambiences, electric hums, resonances. And several times these categories evidently overlap. Hence all sounds are "natural" sounds. Therefore the old question is: what is "natural"? And natural in comparison/opposition to what? Unnatural? Artificial? Cultural? In effect, all phenomena you can hear in this work are properly as they presented themselves in their environment (editing has been the only technique employed in composition). Yet they derive from the interaction of the "local events" (the resonant materials) with the microphone system. If what we hear is a "natural sound", and a "natural sound" is what we hear, there is a paradox here, because actually many of these sounds wouldn't be usually heard in normal conditions; sometimes masked by louder sounds, other times they simply pass unnoticed and mingled as background, or they only stem from the interaction between a resonant material and the microphone. Of course, several of these sounds could be labelled as "anthropic" phenomena, but phenomena mostly not aimed at the generation of any acoustics, which results as a by-product of the main goal of the system in action.
Thus we are confronted with a new question: are all sounds cultural? Because we define them (by hearing, and then recording, selecting, editing and framing and listening to). But mostly because we decide to define them, give them a name, a source, a "representation". Even, when we do this, we separate them from their background, thus applying a certain (acoustic) meaning to them as local forms, and consequently by forming categories, and filling them. And in the end coming to something like the "natural" vs. "cultural" opposition. And yet, the background itself is not inert.

All recordings are from my home town, Udine, and mostly from my own surroundings, mainly gathered late at night. All sounds are generated within (or captured by) the interaction/relationship between "natural" acoustics of diverse kinds, with a hidden resonant character, and the microphone system. Small sonic microclimates, "naturally" resonating (due to many reasons, including wind, mechanic vibrations, and the interaction between systems). As said, as a radio work, it tries to "exploit" the medium in its possibilities and probabilities, and in its intrinsic narrative nature, as I see it, not necessarily linear, but nevertheless consistent.

Sources: environmental sounds (steps, cars, dogs, pavement, bicycle, crickets, doors, barriers, hooters, airplane, rings, wind, voices, manhole covers, bats, crockery, motorbikes, shutters, trapdoors, trains, raindrops, bus, rubble, level-crossings, birds, leaves, brakes, metal chains), resonances from various metallic structures (gates, grating, fences, handrail, wires, bicycle racks), drones from air conditioning stations, a pedestrian wooden bridge, the town water channels, a large city fountain, a theatre outdoor hall, the microphonic systems, several electric hums from streetlights and UPS street stations, a stone wall.
Equipment: portable dat recorder, condenser microphones (80%), self-built contact microphones (20%).
No analogic or digital treatment (no eq). Digitally edited.
Recorded 23-31 may 2009, in Udine, Italy. Composed and mixed down 1-14 june 2009 in 'the black room', Udine.
Title is in Ladakhi, Sino-Tibetan language spoken in Ladakhi district of Jammu-Kashmir state, India.

18.10.09 (#254)

moving on to our third edition of framework250 celebrations, this week we heard exclusive tracks by jim haynes (with whom i have just finished a small tour of the northeastern united states - and a pleasure it was, sir!), dallas simpson (a long-time and always thought-provoking contributor to framework) and keith berry (who fans know we haven't heard from in quite some time, so this is a real treat).  jim and keith have each given us beautiful composed tonal and textural works, while dallas has produced one of his special binaural works, conceptually structured around community radio (and resonancefm in particular) and it's fragility.  he says:

"recorded in-car, using custom in-ear binaural microphone techniques. selected from over an hour of driving and radio tuning on the M25 on 5th september 2009, recorded as a live continuous single take. edited and mixed by dallas simpson. all sounds are as heard, live and unprocessed.  the work is a play on the term "radio traffic" and an allusion to the frailty of resonancefm.  by recording on the fringe of reception and ending the track entering a tunnel, where the radio drops out to white noise, the fragility of existence of resonancefm is metaphorically alluded to."

we also heard tracks this week from bernhard gal's release of live performance recordings, and markus jones release on the new ambit dit label, an endeavour of auricular recordings.  next week we are pleased to present a framework:afield edition produced in udine, italy by giancarlo toniutti.  i'm sure you can't wait!

“Kdi dctb 146” is a sound art, sound cartography project and study of the soundscape around the Taurion (Thaurion) river.Taurion river takes its source on the plateau de Millevaches, close to Gentioux (France). I truly began this project on august 2005. This project breaks up into several phases of recording programmed according to different geographical areas covering the totality of the river.

04.10.09 (#252)

welcome to the 2nd edition of our framework250 celebrations!  these celebrations are going to continue for awhile, so you might as well get used to them...

in this edition we heard framework250 tracks from peter cusack, thomas tilly (aka ), rie nakajima, and chris watson.  these are all new exclusive tracks in celebration of framework passing its 250th edition, which aired in september.  a selection of the clebratory tracks (as many as will fit on two cds) will be published  towards the end of the year, which can be yours in return for a modest donation.  i've been blathering on about this for some time, but all the details can be found on the framework website (not to mention just above, in the heading of this mail), and we hope you will donate, help out framework, and reserve yourself a copy of what will be a great release...

chris and peter both contributed some beautiful untreated field recordings, chris with a recording of nesting ravens, and peter with 2 short recordings made with contact mics attached to train tracks.  rie and thomas both contributed beautiful compositions, thomas with elemental textural sounds, and rie with more intimate domestic details.  meanwhile, we also heard some other submissions we've had kicking around for awhile; two improvisations recorded using an fm radio in the early 80's by michael snow, and some new and as yet unreleased compositional work by the ever active eric cordier (who has also contributed a track for the framework250 project, which we'll be coming to in an upcoming show).

finally, i should announce that framework once again has a new address.  framework hq will be relocating from the home it has had for the last 3 years in france to a new one in southeast estonia, where it will begin a long term collaboration with the the moks centre for art and social practice (http://moks.ee).  stay tuned for more news about those collaborations in coming months.  see below for the new permanent address.  don't worry if you've already sent something to the french address; i will be returning there in early november and will be able to pick up anything that has arrived there.

27.09.09 (#251)

this edition has been produced in the uk by simon whetham, and features artists he encountered during a residency in estonia in early 2009. for more info see http://www.activecrossover.co.uk, or http://www.simonwhetham.co.uk.

Framework Afield: Active Crossover

Active Crossover began with Simon being invited as Artist-in-residence at the Polymer Factory Culturehouse in Tallinn, Estonia. During the residency Simon recorded in Tallinn, Tartu and in rural Estonia, and also Riga in Latvia, meeting and working with a number of other artists.

It became clear that this was a kind of cultural exchange, with ideas, approaches and theories discussed and compared. Simon also received a great deal of support and generosity during his trip.

There were already plans to exhibit the results of the residency as an installation, but the idea formed that work by the artists Simon worked, performed and traveled with would also be included, juxtaposed with Simon's own compositions. More details of the installation and the project as a whole can be found at www.activecrossover.co.uk.

This edition of framework:afield gathers work by the artists involved, as well as some recordings from the residency. Many thanks to all the contributors and all at the Polymer Factory/Art Container for making it possible.

20.09.09 (#250!)

so - we made it!  this is framework's 250th edition!  what more need be said?  in this edition we took a look back at our very first broadcast, including some (rather embarrassing) introductions to the theme of the show by me and my original cohost joel stern, and a rebroadcast of our first every live on-air performance, performed over the phone by romuald wadych.

the rest of this edition, after the first ever framework introduction by yours truly, was made up of exclusive new tracks, sent to us by regular framework contributors, in celebration of our landmark.  as i've now explained several times, but will once again refuse to shut up about: there are many more of these tracks to come; we'll be airing them all over the next several shows, and once they've all aired, we'll be releasing them (or as many of them as will fit on 2 cds) as a framework250 celebratory double cd compilation, in handmade, silk-screened, origami packaging.  the compilation will only be available directly through framework, and will be sent as a thank-you to anyone who donates €25 or more through the framework website.  so help us celebrate this landmark, visit http://www.frameworkradio.net, donate, and reserve yourself a copy of the comp (shipping in december)!

lastly, you'll note below that yet again, framework has a new address.  i am currently amidst travels in the northeastern united states (see my personal website, http://www.murmerings.com, for details on my gigs and activities) , but upon returning to europe i will at long last be relocating permanently to estonia.  if you've recently sent something to my french address, fear not, it will make it into my hands, but from this point on the new estonian address below will be the one to use.  so, go on, send me stuff!

13.09.09

so - the clock is ticking!  next week is framework250, the 250th, yes, 250th edition of framework!  we began in june, 2002, and we're still going strong.  we have a big celebration planned, and next week we'll begin airing a collection of exclusive tracks created specifically for this landmark by a huge collection of artists who have been important to us over the years.  you'll find out who they are as we go along, but suffice it to say there will be many familiar names amongst them.  we'll be publishing the tracks as a celebratory 2nd compilation before the end of the year, which can be yours as a thank-you gift when you donate €25 or more via the framework website.  so go, and donate!  your name will go at the top of the list to receive a copy as soon as they're ready.

meanwhile, i am now on the verge of a 6 week journey to the united states, where i'll be giving performances, workshops, and lectures up and down the east coast, alone and with the likes of jim haynes and brendan murray.  all the events are detailed on my website; if you'd like to see where i'll be, visit http://www.murmerings.com and click on events.

so now on to the show:

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in barcelona by ariadna alsina and the participants of the sound and space workshop.  a few words from ariadna:

Field recordings, sound activations, personal impressions, collective reflexion...
This podcast was realized by the participants of the Sound and Space workshop, given by Paulo Raposo and Patrick McGinley in November 2008 in Barcelona, Spain. The workshop was organized by L'Ull Cec with the collaboration of Sons de Barcelona and it was held in Hangar.

06.09.09

greetings, and welcome to the first new playlist after our little summer break - we're back, and in full force with this bug-based edition to coincide with resonancefm's participation in pestival last week in london.  we dug through lots of material, new and old, with works from 2009 back to 1973, to collect tracks constructed from, containing, or inspired by the sounds of insects.  what's more, we were lucky to have recently been sent this buggy framework introduction, recorded recently in poland by uk artist martin clark.

we also have some important news:  this month framework will hit an amazing landmark, with the broadcast of our 250th show!  it will air on september 20th (and not on september 27th, as i imply in this six-legged edition, ahem), and will begin a series a celebrations that will continue throughout the rest of this year.  a very large group of artists, who have all contributed to the development of framework over the years, have agreed to donate new and exclusive works to mark the occasion.  we will begin airing these exclusive works in show #250, and will then be publishing all the works on a special 2cd compilation with handmade, silk-screened packaging.  the release will not technically be for sale, but will be given as a thank you gift to anyone who makes a one-time donation of 25 euros or more (or to any subscription that will result in the same amount) through the framework website.  but no need to wait!  donate now and you'll go at the top of the list to receive a copy as soon as it's available.  also, those of you who have already given need not feel left out; you'll all be receiving a copy as well.

so - many artists, well-known and unknown alike (you'll be finding out who over the next several weeks), have agreed to donate their work as a sign of support for framework, now is the time for you to show your support too!  visit the framework website, donate now, and reserve yourself a copy of the framework250 celebratory 2cd compilation.  as always, 25% of your donation will go directly to resonancefm.

26.07.09

first, an announcement: framework will be taking it's usual summer holidays for the month of august.  that means that this is the last new show until we return on september 6th, with an insect-specific show to mark resonancefm's broadcasting from pestival in london (http://pestival.org).  we will not be leaving you high and dry however: although we won't be sending out any playlists, we will be airing and podcasting shows from the archive, most of which have never been online before, so will be new to most of your ears, and undoubtedly of great historic interest (for example, you can listen to the wavering of my nervous voice live in the studio back in the early days).  here is the schedule for the august broadcasts, so you can check the playlist archives for details:
  • week of august 2nd - repeat from 28.11.03
  • week of august 9th - repeat from 19.03.04
  • week of august 16th - repeat from 09.09.05
  • week of august 23st - repeat from 13.01.06
  • week of august 30th - repeat from 23.05.07
and since this will be my last chance to badger you for a while, i'll take full advantage: if you haven't already, please consider becoming a framework donor - you can do so easily from the website via paypal, as a one-time or regular donor.  it's been 7  years and nearly 250 shows - we need your support!   and now on to the show:

this is the second part of these are a few of my favorite things, produced in montreal, canada by france jobin, aka i8u.  france says:
As i mentioned in the first installment, my interpretation of field
recording based works is very broad, however there is a thread I like to
follow, which is to find artists who have mastered their unique identity
through the music of sound.

I chose to open and close this evening's program with Mika Vainio's Behind
the Radiators released as part of Touch Sevens series, a 7" vinyl releases
only on Touch Music.

Enjoy!

our last regular edition before our august holidays - we've got one more edition of framework:afield coming up for you next week (the 2nd part of france jobin's my favorite things), and then we'll be airing some archive shows while we take a much needed break.  next week we'll let you know which editions we'll be airing so you can check the playlist archive for details while we're away.  those dates will also be up on the website.

this edition featured some new unreleased material, and some sort-of-new free downloadable material.  idle quietist (uk), olga palomäki (fi) and maria balabas (ro) all treated us to some of their unreleased work, while jgrzinich (ee) released some of his own archive material as free mp3s on his own maaheli editions.  we also heard some new work by mathieu ruhlmann, and a first contribution to the show from canadian artist and designer ambrose pottie, in the form of  a framework introduction.  hopefully there will be more coming from him in the future.

and just before we disappear for our summer holidays, i would like to point out a little detail that we're rather excited about:  both resonancefm and framework turned 7 this past summer, and, doing some late-night math recently, we have realised that we will soon be airing our 250th (!) edition of the show!  so we are now planning just how we will be celebrating this event.  i don't want to give it away, but suffice it to say it already involves upwards of 20 artists who have been instrumental in making framework what is it today, and it will involve lots of great sounds entering your ears.

meanwhile i would also like to say thank you to the listeners who have decided to become regular or one-time framework donors.  we really need your support, and we really appreciate these efforts on your part.  you will notice that i have added a list of donors with links to their projects/websites/myspaces/whatever to the framework website, so go have a look and see who our supporters are, or become one yourself.  let's make another 250 editions possible.  as always, 25% of your donation goes directly to resonancefm...

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in the uk by martin clarke.  for more info see martin's website at http://www.rockscottage.net.  a brief description from martin:

The programme is a series of short soundscapes from different parts of the world (Lebanon, Ukraine, Poland, Portugal) but that structure kind of dissolves towards the end and it goes:  Beirut, Kiev, Biebrza (Poland), Nodar/Parada (Portugal) and Mlynik (Poland).

and once again, a blatant monetary plea: as i announced last week, i have now added clear paypal donation buttons to the framework website.  producing framework takes a lot of my time, and i need your help to be able to continue.  everything helps - if a handful of you were to choose to donate just 1 euro per month via the subscription button, it would make things  a lot easier.  everything about framework is free and without sponsorship or advertising, and i want to keep it that way, so if you value the show, and particularly if you listen via the free podcast, please  donate, either as a one-off, or with a regular monthly subscription. and of course 25% of your donation will be passed on to the equally-deserving resonancefm.  so come on folks!  show us you care!

one more note for podcast subscribers: you may have experienced some problems downloading last week's edition - these have now been resolved and the file is still available, so you should be able to refresh and relaunch the download now...

05.07.09

welcome to the latest regular edition of framework, featuring another batch of great sounds or the released, unreleased, and freely downloadable variety.  the summer is moving on, and what do i have to tell you?  framework will be taking it's usual annual summer holidays during the month of august, but we'll be lining up some shows from the archives to keep yours ears in tune while we're away.  we've got some great editions of framework:afield coming up for you in the next few weeks, and in the fall season: shows from the likes of martin clarke, giancarlo toniutti, france jobin, cedric peyronnet...

meanwhile you may have noticed that i've now added all-official-like donation buttons to the framework website - the show has been running for over 7 years now, and it is absolutely essential that i find a financial way to help it continue.  so to help keep the podcast free and avoid advertising  and sponsorship, please consider donating, either by monthly subscription or as a one-off.  you can donate by paypal directly from the framework website.  25% of all donations will be passed on to resonancefm, without whom framework would not exist, or if you'd rather donate directly to resonance you can do so on their support page: http://www.resonancefm.com/support.

28.06.09

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in the uk by dallas simpson, and also features joe young, phill harding, and lisa whistlecroft. for more information see http://www.dallassimpson.com.  about the program in dallas' own words:
'Call and Response' - an Environmental Panel Discussion, in memory of the 120th anniversary of Ludwig Koch's first wildlife sound recording (aged 8!) in 1889.

Following some conversations about 18 months ago, concerning a collaboration with actor and sound recordist Joseph Young, the topic of a 'conversation piece' came up. Sadly it never happened. But then I had the invitation from Patrick McGinley to curate a radio programme for the Framework Afield series.

So the idea evolved of a panel discussion - a conversation across time and place, featuring four environmental sound artists I had met at some point, even if only fleetingly. Consequently Lisa Whistlecroft, Phill Harding, Joseph Young and Lucy Gibson were invited to join me in a conversation and panel discussion.

The Brief: Each artist would choose a sound work of another artist that had influenced them or had inspired them (the call), plus a work of their own that had been created as a result of hearing that work (the response) - hence the concept - Call and Response. We would listen to each others Call and Response and comment. OK, a standard conventional panel discussion scenario. Sure, been there done that.... but the twist was that we would record the programme live in the woods with sound replay equipment on location, and each of us would record our own individual binaural perception of the experience simultaneously during the recording. For the location I chose the pastoral magnificence of Shining Cliff Woods near Ambergate in Derbyshire, a location that I was familiar with, and which has provided me with many happy hours recording experiences over the years.

The Programme: My ideas evolved as the deadline for the event (Sunday 29th March) gradually loomed nearer. As we were all individual environmental sound artists, with different approaches, we would walk in to the recording area from different directions through the woods 'entering by the Four Winds' (North, South, East, West), as it were, each of us recording the our own binaural trajectory through the woodland. The 'Theme Tune' for the programme would be excerpts from the recordings of birdsong by Ludwig Koch, from an original set of 1937 BBC 78's I had acquired many years ago, and played live on a mechanical HMV wind-up gramophone - as a tribute to the fact that Ludwig Koch nearly always recorded mechanically. Playback of the guests pieces would be on a portable CD player with speaker system, using a 12v car battery to mains inverter for power. Then at the end we would all walk off in different directions - scattering to the Four Winds, so to speak, while each of us would

continue to record for a few minutes.

The Recording: And so the day came. Sadly Lucy had had an unfortunate accident a couple of days before, was totally incapacitated and could not make the recording. There were thoughts of re-arranging, but for a number of reasons it was impractical. However, there were consequences. Phill was going to have a lift with Lucy, as he does not drive, so now he would have to come by train to Derby and I would pick him up from the station on the day. Meanwhile the major part of the gear for the recording would be carried to the location by some intrepid helpers - John Sampson, Sam Simpson and Jon Simpson, (for whom extreme thanks are due) carried some distance through the woods and set up near an exquisite small lake. Oh, and by the way we had also decided to video the proceedings for good measure!

So I arrived fresh and enthusiastic, with Phill, at about 11:30 in the morning to find my guests and the others completely shattered having collectively carried all the gear (including seats, tables, 2 car batteries, speakers, CD player, sound recording equipment, video equipment, sandwiches, drinks...) from the car park at one end of the woods to the recording location. Having given my profuse apologies, and being reassured by everyone that it was "nothing... really!", we caught our breath and made a start. Anyway, to cut a long story short, we made the recording, (twice) and generally speaking we were all happy with the overall result.

The Edit: When I reviewed the recordings it turned out that the first, and best recording, including the walk-ins and walk-outs lasted about an hour and a half. Rather more than the prescribed absolute maximum of 55:40! So things would have to go. Out went the walk-ins and walk-outs, still had to lose about 15 minutes. Decided to cut a lot of my intros and comments and focus on the guests. Still about 7 minutes too long. I wanted to preserve their conversations and comments primarily, so further cuts had to be made to the works brought by the guests, and I hereby apologise for the inevitable editing of these works - the time constraints of the programme would not permit their full length versions being aired. So finally, after much agonising, I had cut the length down to 55:37, phew! But it wasn't easy and I wanted to preserve a lazy, casual, real time feel to the whole proceedings.

But there was more to the edit than just getting the length right. I wanted to incorporate the different binaural perspectives of myself and each guest into the recording, so editing involved both switching perspectives between myself and individual artist's recordings, (in the video / film editing tradition of switching between different camera perspectives) as well as running some sections in parallel - up to 4 binaural recordings are running in parallel in some places, so spatial ambiguities, and variable phasing effects, due to deliberately slipped time alignments, are also encouraged in the edit, which becomes a composition in itself!

A Thought:

Ultimately the programme is about us all inhabiting an outdoor environment and the 'call and response' therefore clearly extends into this realm. And this is really the object of the work, to take the form of a panel discussion out of the formality of a studio or other enclosed venue and allow the event to unfold in the openness of an outdoor environment, where the random and unpredictable intrusion of environmental sounds into our conversation and the effect of the environment on our listening experience becomes the real focus of the exercise. The result is both phonographic and documentary, creative and inspirational. And the fact that each of us has a totally unique and beautiful experience of the whole makes it relevant to us all.

Once again, I would like to thank my guests on the day, Phill Harding, Lisa Whistelcroft and Joseph Young, for their invaluable contributions to the event, and

Wishing Lucy Gibson all the best for a speedy recovery.

a repeat edition from the framework archives this week, first aired on the 13th of december, 2002, and featuring lisa alexander's dance for radio project.  here's what i wrote in the original playlist all those years ago:

This week we presented another live project, Dance For Radio, a dance piece choreographed specially for Framework by Lisa Alexander and performed by Lisa and Nicola Herd.  This short piece was recorded in several different environments by several different methods, a selection of which were presented prior to a live performance of the piece in the Resonance FM studio.  More details of the individual recordings below.  We're very curious to hear what people thought of this piece; if you heard it, please let us know!

We also, of course, had some great new music to present: perhaps my favorite raw field recording submission yet, by Simon Keep, some domestic composition by The Beige Channel, and a glorious new double cd by Gen Ken Montgomery.

simon keep  /  beautiful recording of footsteps through deep crunching snow in japan

the beige channel  /  chez moi  /  chances are  /  quadtral

highly treated domestic/household sounds on our favorite format: the 3" cd

simon keep  /  snow powder dust  /  interview with the eggs  /  -

treated version of the above field recording - minimal edgy tones

gen ken montgomery   /  radiator 1  /  pondfloorsample  /  xi records

excerpt of a collaborative piece with chop shop's scott konzelmann from gen ken's 'domestic release' archive

www.xirecords.org, www.home.earthlink.net/~kenmontgomery, www.generatorsoundart.org

gen ken montgomery   /  bath drain  /  pondfloorsample  /  xi records

another selection from ken's 'domestic release' archive

gen ken montgomery   /  egg slicer and...  /  pondfloorsample  /  xi records

raw, spiny composition, recorded in '99 during a residency at the spritzenhaus in hamburg , germany

dance for radio  /  lisa alexander, nicola herd

a short dance piece was choreographed by lisa alexander and recorded in various locations around london .  we then selected four recordings for the presentation, which culminated in a live performance of the piece in the resonance fm studio.  below find details for the four selected recordings, and the live performance:

*recorded with binaural microphones in greenwich foot tunnel, with passing pedestrians, trains, joggers and bikes

*recorded with binaural microphones in clissold park, stoke newington , in the mud

*recorded with binaural microphones from the basement of the shakespeare pub, stoke newington ; the dance was
      performed in the bar above

*recorded with stereo contact microphones in the whispering gallery of st paul's cathedral

*live performance captured by stereo condenser microphone and stereo contact microphones; these two signals were mixed       for broadcast

this edition has been produced in boston, massachusetts by brendan murray.  for more information see http://www.brendanmurray.com.  about the show:

Coded With Paved Paws

A mapping of childhood anxiety with recordings of films ostensibly nuclear combat and apocalypse.  I was (and am) an indoor kid at heart so my "natural environment" is/was sitting in front of the television, even though I've broken the habit as an adult (and switched it to being stuck in front of computers most of the time). These "field recordings" of old television programs (mostly lifted from the internet) represent my youthful fear masked in young dread of nuclear war. I concentrated in fake documentaries about the subject, as I always found that construct especially chilling.  Included are recordings of shortwave radio and re-purposed music that I loved as a kid.  The piece is not political, despite its content.

PLEASE REMEMBER: the framework podcast feed has now changed!  please update your subscriptions!  please visit our new feed page here to update.  the old feed will soon cease to function, so do it now!

thanks to those of you who responded to my plea for framework intros last week.  but for those of you who put it off once again, it's not too late!  we still need more, so get out there and intro us!

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in milan, italy by matteo uggeri, aka hue.  for more information see http://www.greysparkle.com.  matteo says:

"The idea for this radio show came from a short chat with my girlfriend Gaia, who asked me, "Well, what is one of the best field recording you ever heard?" In that moment the first thing that came into my mind was a short file that the Sicilian artist Domenico Sciajno sent to Adriano Zanni/Punck for a weird project (you can check it out here) in which I also participated. It was just a recording of boys playing football in a place full of natural reverb, in Palermo. So Gaia said "Great. So maybe you can ask other artists to record games all around Italy".
And that's what I did: I asked most of my musical buddies involved into the field recording practice to send me recordings of people playing any sort of game in this country, and most of them did it. Almost everybody had to record it for this purpose, as nobody already had such files (as I expected).

The results are, in my opinion, amazing: in spite of the fact that quite often field recordings are pretty melancholic and 'speechless' (a sort of thing that I love in them), these ones are obviously full of human voices, screams, laughter, cries, even swears, but in any case they sound to me full of life.

Therefore, this show is a "happy one", maybe funny, maybe not, in any case pretty different from the others I'm used to hearing on the Framework podcast.

So: thanks to all the artists that contributed, who are - in order (you may also hear their voices presenting in Italian their recordings):

Part 1: Andrea Ferraris (Ics) + Hue, Urkuma, Carlo Giordani, Hue, Obsil.
Part 2: Fhievel, Hipurforderai, Hue, Carlo Giordani.
Part 3: Fhievel, Fabio Damiani, Punck, Aldo Becca.
Part 4: Mark Hamn, Domenico Sciajno, Andrea Ferraris (Ics) + Hue"

a couple of announcements/requests to make this week:  first, the podcast.  as of this week framework is using a new podcast feed, hosted at feedburner.  the previous feed address will continue to work for the time being, but we are asking all podcast subscribers to please update their subscriptions to the new location.  if you want to enter the address directly into your podcatcher, here it is:  http://feeds2.feedburner.com/frameworkradio.  click that link if you want to take advantage of feedburner's automatic subscription links, or go to the framework homepage and click <<<podcast>>>.  *do not enter the feed address manually in your browser if you want to use feedburner's subscription links* - feedburner will only display it's pages in full html (with the subscription links) if arrived at via a live web link.  don't ask, just trust me...

second, intros!  we need 'em!  get out there, record some intros, and send them to me!  go go go!

this edition, perhaps because of my mood, or the rainy normandy weather, is a very slow developer ('as opposed to the usual framework fast-paced action?' i hear you asking, rolling your eyes).  some nice long extracts and tracks from just a few releases this time around - some gems we've been looking forward to airing for some time.  two of arsenije jovanovic's radio works, jana winderen's exquisite hydrophone compositions, simon whetham's latest work on the revived trente oiseaux, now a web-label, some more sounds from our favorite new german label,
1000füssler, and some outdoor, interactive environmental psychedelia from finnish brothers lauhkeat lampaat.  all this, and an intro by steve burnett to boot. (we know we can always count on you for intros, steve!)

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in montreal, canada by france jobin, aka i8u.  for more information see her website at http://www.i8u.com.  france says:

"these are a few of my favorite things"

My interpretation of field recording based works is very broad, however, i can tell you what influences me with my work and hope this gives you a hint as to how i came to choose the pieces you will hear.

The sound of music, my favorite things, John Coltrane, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, de Bussy, Satie, Penderezky, the list goes on, but basically, all these artists have a sound, it is unmistakable.

What John Coltrane does with his interpretation of my favorite things, is what i try to do with my own work, i try to do with textures, what he does with notes. The way he interprets the melody, flowing with incredible precision and musicality, i find very inspiring.

When i prepared this program, i tried to take this further, looking for different processes of interpretation and looking for artists who have mastered  their unique identity through the music of sound.

with this edition we welcome two new stations into the framework fold: cooradio, based in thessaloniki, greece, and soundartradio 102.5fm, based in south devon, uk.  links to their respective sites above.  framework has also now become part of the official resonancefm podcast feed, going out to over 700 subscribers.  so the show is now being heard by more folks than ever, and we're keen to take it further still - if you know any independent radio stations (web or fm) that might be interested in adding framework to their regular broadcast schedules, please let us know!

a gritty, watery, woody show this week, from eric cordier and denis tricot's giant orgue de bois (wooden organ) construction, built in public spaces as a giant installation and played by the artists and the audience alike, to giancarlo toniutti's piece described as a 'sound-field for rattle-harp', an instrument built from found elements such as drift metal, string, wire, bells, bones and wood.  we also heard scott sherk's collection of sounds from iceland, emmanuel mieville's compositions using sounds from the very river that passes my small village here in northeastern france (the andelle), rj valeo's process-based field-recording deconstructions, michael trommer's delicate tones, and meri von kleinsmid's textural bursts.

and the semi-regular plea:  i need intros folks!  if you've been waiting for the perfect moment to record a framework introduction, now is the time!  your work will be heard by more listeners then ever, and the kudos will be great.  so get out there and record me some intros!

a fine collection of work in this edition, including our first ever submission from indonesia, from composer/percussionist bambang dwiatmoko.  we also heard two releases from germany's nice
1000füssler label, another beautiful (and beautifully packaged) release from 23five, by brendan murray, and the latest solo release from his sometimes-collaborator seth nehil on the equally fine alluvial recordings.  also some web only works from aymeric de tapol and mike hallenbeck, aka archive.

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in toronoto and montreal by anna friz.  for more information see http://www.myspace.com/littlevoicesintheradio.  anna says:

Both these pieces balance between documentary, intervention, and reverie. The pedestrian reclaims significance, no longer dwarfed by the built environment but sonically activating the presence of space. With "Vacant City Radio", I aimed to create a poetic space for contemplation of urban decay and renewal, of the passage of time, of cycles of rust, rot, and regrowth. I sought to imagine an audible city that is multi-layered: a city described not just by concrete architecture or its remnants but by ephemeral signals converging and dispersing. With "Radio is everywhere in their dreams", the pedestrian explores purely imagined space, where dreamers themselves are radios, and where signals cross with others also lost in uneasy sleep. With both pieces, noise and interference are the subject and the method of creation, where sounds conjure space and resonate with its rupture, its indeterminacy, and its imagined life.

some sounds from the innova label and it's founder philip blackburn this week, including a piece that should bring back memories for anyone who grew up listening to npr in 1980's america like i did (or who still listens today, for that matter).  also several selections from a francisco lopez release from new york's gdstereo label, another look at sebastiane hegary's mo(nu)ment project, some old-school tweets from jesse paul miller,  and some no-longer-quite-so-new sounds from new zealander richard francis.  all this after a robotic framework intro recorded by osvaldo cibils.

two recent(ish) collaborations made up the body of this week's edition, with the french super-duo of la casa and peyronnet (aka toy.bizarre) and their beautiful sonic survey of the creuse region of central france, and the smaller survey of a house in the middle u.s. and it's evp (electronic voice phenomona - purported to be the voices of the dead captured and communicated with via standard radio frequencies) by michael esposito and fm einheit (of enisturzende neubauten fame).  we also heard two recordings representing respectively the opposite ends of one spectrum - the heavily treated compositions by portuguese duo @c, and the untreated captures of indian artist
budhaditya chattopadhyay.  all this preceded by a framework intro recorded in lisbon by sirr records label boss paulo raposo.

22.03.09

this week's sheepish edition of framework:afield has been produced in the uk by felicity ford:

S H E E P

Featuring highlights from Greg Wagstaff, the Sounding Dartmoor project and the excellent Freesounds archive, this episode of Framework has largely been arranged around Felicity Ford's sheep-related recordings.

Since October 2008, Felicity has been researching the history of the British Wool Trade in writing, knitting and sound-recording. Her explorations have taken her into the bleak Romney Marshes where wool was smuggled out of the country for hundreds of years, into smallscale spinning mills, and on the daily rounds of a Wensleydale flock keeper. Growing her own crop of Woad and recording the process of turning it into a dye, she has also met with sheep farmers and learned about the related Indigo-dyeing process.

The sonic aspects of the British Wool Trade recording journey so far have been like wool itself; full of the stories of people, animals and the land, full of the loudness, earthiness, laughter and straightforwardness that accompany hard work, scratchy like the kemp in fleece, and sometimes - like knitting - repetitive, soft, and quiet.

our latest regualr edition, beginning with some exquisite rail-travelling snoring captured by austrian artist barbara wilding.  we weer also finally able to hear some of christopher delaurenti's between-symphony recordings (a first copy of the first edition of the cd disappeared in the uk post some time ago), as well as sampling some recent collaborative work by old favorite toy.bizarre, this time working with pierre redon, and a new offering from italy's matteo uggeri (aka hue) with alessandro calbucci.  this all came together with some great unreleased work by scott sherk; ice is a soundtrack to a sound and painting installation of the same name, and trains is... well, you can guess...

well, a slight error in planning this week, as i'm away from home.  i forgot to bring the detailed tracklist with me for this edition, so you'll have to wait until i'm back in francja at the end of the week.  currently still in poland, and with one more event, if you're around: i'll be performing tomorrow at galleria entropia in wrocław with john grzinich (there's more infomation on the events page at http://www.murmerings.com).  there are also already some photos from our performance in bytom on john's site (http://www.maaheli.ee), and we plan to put a sound sampling from it up soon as well.

anyway, i though this mailing was about a radio show?  the fact is that the main reason for this trip to poland was to curate a framework listening room at the kronika gallery in bytom, as part of the hell of things festival.  from now until the end of march one room of the gallery (with plenty of soft things for comfortable sprawling) is playing non-stop framework archives from out last 7 years of broadcasting.  kronika is a great place run by great people, so if you happen to be in bytom do drop in and see them, and tell them framework sent you.  and there's plenty more info on the hell of things festival here: http://hellofthings.blogspot.com.

so, yes, the show:  this edition features collaborative work by mathieu ruhlmann and celer, from their spekk release themed on human kind's early underwater travels, and jesse paul miller with will kitchen, featuring instrumental improvisations over miller's field recordings from thailand.  also a collection of brief lofi moments from asher, some dense reworkings by soluble fish, and the return of the legendary column one.  all this after a framework introduction recorded for us by long-time framework contributor martin clarke.

so, as i'm sure you're all on the edge of your seats to see the detailed tracklist, i will be putting it together as soon as i return home and adding it to the online archive.  you should be able to find it there later in the week.  in the meantime - guess.

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in moscow, russia by dmitry vasilyev, and features the work of john grzinich.  for more information see dmitry's website at http://wwww.monochromevision.ru, or john's website at http://maaheli.ee.  dmitry says:

John Grzinich is american musician active since mid 90s. His ground of work is field recordings he made during intense traveling through various countries and places like forests, abandoned countryside etc. What is peculiar in his musical approach, it's special meaning of human environment, namely - estrangement from the traditional forms of musical aesthetics through aural perception and spatial orientation. His albums were released by many labels specializing in electroacoustic and experimental electronics: Staalplaat, Erewhon, Intransitive Recordings, Cloud of Statics, SIRRecords etc. "Intimations" released by Richard Francis' label CMR in New Zealand. I think it's the best example of synchronization between musical harmony and transcendental meditation."

an edition of raw field recordings this week, including quite a few short recordings from dave phillips' appropriately titled field recordings release on the little enjoyer label, all made during his voyages in thailand, largely outside of populated areas - insects, frogs, birds, water...  we also heard some spacious interiors recorded by jeph jerman, the rivers and streams of switzerland recorded by leny puksar, and parts of a composition made by justin bennett using recordings from his time in istanbul.  this all began with a framework introduction recorded for us in barcelona, translated into catalan and spoken by jordi salvado.

this,  our first edition of framework:afield for 2009, has been a long time coming (although not quite as long as i lead you to believe in the intro, when i say the featured event took place in february 2007.  it was actually 2008 - d'oh!).  i produced this edition myself, and it features the sound as space / sound as language workshop which i gave with max shentelevs in tartu, estonia almost one year ago.  the workshop, which has also now been given many more times in many more countries, focuses on site-specific sound, on sound as a describer and creator or space, and on sound as a tool for non-verbal communication.  it is, very basically, about listening.  in this particular instance we made a lot of recordings during the workshop itself, and also compiled some recordings of feedback from the participants.  there were also two compositions made from the workshop's sounds, one by myself, and the other by john grzinich.  with all of these elements i put together this show.  thanks to svan vabar, laura paju, siim angerpitt, triinu lille, max shentelevs and john grzinich for their contributions.

for more information on the workshop don't hesitate to get in touch - we have now placed it under the umbrella of the revenant project, so there will soon be more info online here:  http://www.revenantsound.net, and there are still notes from another instance here: http://maaheli.ee/sassal.

happy new year!

we're back with the first playlist of 2009, a great collection of tracks from all over the world, and a few announcements:

first, we have a new website!  or rather, the same old website but in a new location.  we also have a new email address.  from now on you will find us here:

http://www.frameworkradio.net
info@frameworkradio.net

our mailing list has also moved and is being rebuilt, so if you would like to subscribe to receive these playlists directly, drop a mail to info@frameworkradio.net with SUBSCRIBE in the message subject.  we're trying to clear out old non-working addresses, so only addresses that have subscribed this way to this new address will remain on the direct list.

so this week's show began with an intro from framework regular felicity ford (check out her own radio podcasts, the missability radio show, and the fantastical reality radio show), and went on to feature 2 compilations: one a collection of experimental sounds gathered by the syrphe label from africa, asia, and the middle east; the other a double disc featuring a long piece by cornucopia and a full disc of remixes.  we also heard some great unreleased work by eric cordier...

lastly, my semi-regular plea: now, with  anew year, is the time to record a framework introduction!  whether you've recorded one before or not, go for it!  guidelines at the end of this mail.  also, we are low on proposals for framework:afield!  if you have an idea for a full edition of field-recording based radio, get in touch!  it's an open call, and we always need new collaborators...
