#294: 2010.07.25

so, this is our last new edition before our annual summer holidays - as per usual we'll be taking the month of august off from the production of new shows.  but also as usual, we've lined up some archive programs for your listening pleasure, so you'll still be getting your weekly framework fix.  we won't be sending out any playlists or making any facebook posts though, since we.  need.  a.  break.  i know you understand...  we'll be back with our next new edition in the first week of september.  in the meantime we still need your new sounds, intro recordings, and afield proposals, so keep them coming!  and keep using that facebook wall for any announcements of interest to framework listeners!

this edition features some great recent(ish) releases, some downloadable sounds, and also some unreleased work.  hope you enjoy it!

#293: 2010.07.18

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in the uk by lee patterson, and features recordings from his upcoming installation, at stour valley arts in kent, entitled elemental fields.  more about the work:

Stour Valley Arts is delighted to present a new work by Lee Patterson resulting from his ongoing residency. Elemental Fields maps an often overlooked landscape in Kent to uncover its hidden sounds. Through ingenious field recordings, Lee Patterson explores the world around us, using it as an acoustic instrument to reveal how shifts in environments can impact our sonic experience.

“Field recording, especially with contact microphones or hydrophones, can confound what one thinks to know of the world, and this remains one of my main motivations, to be able to venture out and discover something of bizarre beauty, something unexpected that astounds and remains inexplicable within an apparently mundane, commodified and tamed world.” Lee Patterson

Lee Patterson is at the centre of a network of artists whose work occupies a space between galleries and concert halls. In recent years he has developed a growing reputation in the international arena as a sound artist and improviser. Using unconventional approaches, he has invented new methods for producing music from everyday objects and amplified devices, as well as original processes for live sound generation. A regular collaborator with artist Luke Fowler, Patterson’s work has been shown at Tate Modern’s Long Weekend, the Barbican’s Radical Nature and AV Festival 10 in Newcastle Gateshead. Recorded works have been released on various albums.

Since November last year, Patterson has been exploring and collecting material in King’s Wood and the Ashford flood plain, working closely with Stour Valley Arts and the Forestry Commission to identify areas of sonic and ecological interest. Through the use of contact microphones and hydrophones, he accesses the microscopic sound worlds of solid materials and underwater environments such as ponds, rivers, drainage ditches and moats. Patterson uses sound recording akin to a sketch book, providing the space for collection and artistic exploration. With these recordings Patterson creates work that provides sonic snapshots of specific landscape and reveals how these are continually in flux.

In July, audiences will be able to experience these hidden worlds through a site specific sound installation which takes place in a found space in the middle of Ashford Town Centre but only minutes away from the flood plain. The installation will comprise a number of discrete rooms, each containing a soundscape composed of field recordings from two local sites: the flood plains surrounding Ashford and nearby King’s Wood in Challock, Kent.

Patterson’s residency will culminate in 2011 with the launch of a physical work situated in King’s Wood. He aims to create a variety of sound making ‘tools’ through selective environmental interventions. One possibility is the creation of one or more ponds, which will be managed and stocked with specific sound producing organisms, as a way of composing underwater soundscapes and creating a rich ongoing sonic resource within the forest.

#292: 2010.07.11

after far too many weeks on the road, finally back home is estonia, where it's hot hot hot!  33 degrees celcius here today, more or less unheard of 'round these parts.  time to escape to forest lakes and shade...

a long list of tracks this week, our penultimate regular edition before our traditional summer break.  some works that have been waiting a very long time in our to-play pile, including this self-released sound collage by jesse paul miller, and this early aural terrains release by kim cascone.  also, a release that forces us to question our own definitions of 'field-recording': fins and swedes singing karaoke on a ferry boat from stockholm to turku?  you be the judge.  i should note as well that, although i've credited these tracks in the playlist to their recordist, cedric anglaret, he himself has chosen to leave his name off the cover of this release; the album title alone is present, a definite comment of his own on the question of authorship.

what else to tell you?  next sunday is the first world listening day; have a look at the world listening project's website for a full invitation, press release, and event listings.  happy listening!

#290: 2010.06.27

greetings this week from framework's traditional home in london!  here just for a brief stop on my way to france, before finally returning home to estonia for the rest of this beautiful summer.  this week we're hearing sounds by
gastón arévalo, bj nilsen, krisw, eric boivin, and the duo shejingren (consisting of framework regular yannick dauby and his partner wan-shuen tsai.  this all began with a framework intro recorded for us by the fellow who is building framework's soon-to-be-launched new website, joe stevens.

as i mention in the show this week, we're coming up to framework's annual summer holidays - we'll be taking the month of august up for a little break, and to finally get the new website up and running.  as usual though, we'll be arranging some archive material to fill the programming and podcasting gap, so have a look through the playlist archives and let us know if there are any old shows you'd like a chance to hear!

#287: 2010.06.06

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in canada by france jobin, as the 5th installment of her regular series, 'my favorite things'.  france says:

Bonjour,  I am france jobin, better know as i8u.  Welcome to  "these are a few of my favorite things".

As mentioned in earlier installments, my interpretation of field recording based works is very broad, however the thread I like to follow is to find  artists who have mastered  their unique identity through the music of sound.

The next 2 editions of 'my favorite things' will focus on a festival that has taken place in Winnipeg, Canada for the last 10 years. Winnipeg is basically in the middle of the Canada, a region commonly referred to as the prairies, it is vast and flat. Don't be fooled, a Winnipeg audience is knowledgeable and discerning. I had the privilege to play twice at this festival and it remains at the top of my list! This is directly linked to the people I came in contact with while i was there. They are, Steve Bates, Jake Moore, Deanna Radford, Don Bargenda, and the festival is Send and Receive.

In the fall of 2009, S+R issued a dvd of the last 10 years, there is almost 11 hours of audio on it, what follows are excerpts of those live performances.

#286: 2010.05.30

my last day in tallinn after our tuned city pre-event (http://www.tunedcity.net); the final performances in a large old waterplane hangar space, with certainly one of the most extraordinary manmade acoustic spaces i've ever experienced, went very well.  maybe we'll get some of the recordings on the show in the coming months.  the next batch of journey's will take me through riga (for a gig in collaboration with my mother!) to torun, poland, and on to the uk.  if your around any of thos spots get in touch!

meanwhile a long list of great recordings making up this week's show, including a great compilation on rob curgenven's recorded fields label, a free online release from luis antero, and more great underwater sounds from jana winderen.

on the road again, so i'll once again keep it short and sweet.  this week i'm writing to you from the attic of the uue maailma seltsimaja ('new world community house') in tallinn - a very interesting community project, well worth looking into: http://www.uusmaailm.ee.  we (john grzinich, derek holzer and i) will be hosting our workshop sonic surveys of tallinn here over the next week, as part of our collaboration with tuned city (http://www.tunedcity.net) over the coming month, and then throughout 2011.  is you're around please check it out!

meanwhile some recordings i've been trying to get to for some time, including an excellent pair of discs by mathieu ruhlmann on the new unfathomless label, brought to us by the good folks at mystery sea, some great spatialization from dallas simpson, and the beautifully packaged (on ben owen's letterpress machine) and beautiful sounding album by gilles aubry, which i noticed seemed to make a lot of the 'best of 2009' lists that were going around a few months ago.  also some more sounds from canada's absolute value of noise, and yet another great framework intro by martin clarke.

#283: 2010.05.09

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in the uk by regular contributor felicity ford, and is a radio version of her interpretation of alvin lucier's gentle fire:

This radio show has been based around recordings made by Felicity Ford for a recent performance of Alvin Lucier's Gentle Fire.  Gentle Fire is a score written by Alvin Lucier in 1971, and it explicitly details the process of collecting sounds that is familiar to all field-recordists.

Collect, on tape, examples of ambient sound events such as those made by

Screeching Brakes, Chattering Guests, Warring Gangs, Rioting Prisoners, Stalling Motors etc.

Using an electronic music synthesiser or any equivalent configuration of electronic components, process the examples in such a way that they become transformed into what could be perceived as sound events of different origin such as those made by

Ocean Waves, Wind in Trees, Flowing Streams, Boiling Tea, Cooing Doves etc.

For example, Snarling Dogs become Crunching Snow; Crashing Planes, Laughing Girls; and Manoeuvring Tanks, Ocean Waves.

Record these transformations…in any sequence or any number of channels, using any manner of mixing, overlapping…taking care only that the process of change from each original sound event to its final state of transformation is slowly, gradually and clearly heard…

-    excerpt from the prose score, Gentle Fire

Using the prose score as a guide, Felicity Ford has been collecting sounds for Gentle Fire for two and a half years.

Trying to change one sound into another is a process that makes us think about surface quality and texture, space and duration. To make Droning Turbines sound like Sounding Dolphins is not easy, and so far methods for collecting such sounds as Frowning Clowns and Spurting Blood have proved elusive. However, hopefully trying to change sounds in this way, searching for rare or potentially inaudible sounds, or even imagining what such sources would sound like, expands our ideas of what the mind’s ear is capable of.

THE RECORDING MAY CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING SOUNDS AND TRANSFORMATIONS*

SOURCE SOUND        TRANSFORMED SOUND

TEARING PAPER             SCUTTLING CRABS
SCREECHING BRAKES      HONKING GEESE
CREAKING DOOR            CROAKING FROGS
DRONING TURBINES        BLOWING GALES
BUZZING SAWS             SWAYING PALMS
FRYING EGGS             FALLING RAIN
POPPING CORN             DRIFTING SANDS
RAGING FIRES             BOILING TEA
ROARING TRAINS         PASSING SHIPS
SPINNING WHEELS         CREAKING BOATS
SNORTING HOGS             WHOOPING CRANES
MELTING SNOW             CRACKLING FIRE
STOMPING BOOTS         RUNNING BOYS
DRAINING DREGS         SWIMMING TUNA
CRACKING ICE             SPOUTING WHALES
BARKING DOGS             WARBLING BIRDS

*THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LIST AND YOU MAY HEAR OR IMAGINE YOU HEAR SOMETHING ELSE.
A version of this show was mixed live at Sonic Art Oxford earlier this year, and you can read more about this score and the process of working with it at www.thedomesticsoundscape.com/wordpress.

#281: 2010.04.25

this edition has been produced in the uk by martin clarke.  for more info on martin's work see http://www.rockscottage.net.  martin says:
This is a collection of field recordings made during July and August 2009 in Georgia and Armenia. I've been quite brutal with the editing, favouring the jump cut over the cross fade and there's fairly minimal layering. There are recordings from Tbilisi, Art Villa Garikula, Arteli Ratcha, Yerevan, Echmiadzin, Utopiana, Dilijan, Sevan, Haghpat, some taxis and some bits of tape found in Mtskheta, Georgia's spiritual centre.

A blog of the trip is here: http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/547936/0/1/asc

Made with support from the European Cultural Foundation.
and an announcement:  the world listening project (http://www.worldlisteningproject.org) will be curating a 4-part series for framework:afield over the coming year, and they have now posted an open call for contributions.  each show is being looked after by a different member and will have a different theme, and the first two (produced by dave armstrong and john kannenberg, respectively) are in production now:

http://www.worldlisteningproject.org/?p=592

also, the framework250 compilations will be featured as part of the upcoming parisonic festival in paris (http://parisonic.fr).  several of the tracks will be diffused, and there will be copies available for attendees.  i also have copies left, so if you haven't already, please support framework and pick one up for yourself!

#280: 2010.04.18

a few more frogs to follow up on yannick dauby's frogscapes edition of framework:afield last week; this time the show is being held together with a skeleton of beautiful recordings from an industrial park make by doug haire.  we're also once again asking the question: what makes a field recording?  do howard stelzer's found cassette tape manipulations count?  in any case, we like them, so we don't really care.  spanish project coeval comes back with their 3rd excellent mp3 release, all 3 available for free download.  also several unreleased works by recent regular contributor diemo schwaz, and a framework introduction that will give you the munchies by jared davison.

as i mentioned last week, framework has now joined facebook!  so go and search for framework radio and come and be our fan.  comments / suggestions / interactions are all more than welcome - the wall is open.  also, i'm pleased to announce that we are currently working on a new website, thanks to the generous volunteering of regular contributor and listener joe stevens.  features to be included will be searchable playlist archives, and streaming of past shows.  hopefully it will be ready and online in the next few weeks!

#279: 2010.04.11

i think you're going to like this one: a great edition of framework:afield this week!  produced in france by yannick dauby, with marc and olivier namblard, this edition is entitled frogscapes.  featuring amphibian and amphibian inspired recordings by the three frenchman, and their own and others' texts.  i've listened to it about a dozen times through already - enjoy!

for more information on these gentlemen:

and one other announcement, or repeat of an announcment: many of you have now tracked framework down on facebook, but for those of you who haven't - come and join us!  yes, framework radio now has a page there, and it's a great way to keep up to date on our ever-exciting activities!  the wall is open for fan posts, so feel free to post info you think framework listeners should know about!  and tell us what you think of the show!

#278: 2010.04.04

so - an announcement: believe it or not, framework has finally joined the 21st century and put itself up for the world to see in the wilds of facebook.  we haven't actually figured out how to use it yet, or what it's for really, but we're there, and if you search for 'framework radio' you'll find us.  apparently you can then click a button an become our 'fan'.  doesn't that sound great??  so go on, we know you're all there, go click buttons and 'fan' us, and we promise we'll figure out how to use it before it implodes and is replaced by some other virtual social protocol...

and now on to the show!

this week is a fine mix of just a few artists, our favorite way to play you sounds.  a couple released (@c, mpld) and plenty of unreleased (everything else) works took us on a tour of empty spaces around the world, a microcosmic building site, plenty of new york city static, and a framework introduction translated on the fly into two different langauges (brownie points to whoever can work out what languages they are) and recorded by sebastiane hegarty.

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in seattle, u.s. by steve peters, and features the seattle phonographer's union.  for more info see http://www.seapho.org.  steve says:
The Seattle Phonographers Union is a collective of artists from various backgrounds who improvise live with unprocessed field recordings. This edition of Framework features unreleased solo works by ten individual members of the group, none of which adhere to the strict limitations of our live performances; field recordings are here freely mixed with musical instruments and subjected to all forms of electronic manipulation and editing, while long crossfades often blur the lines between one piece and the next.

please forgive the tardiness of this playlist, now 1 week late.  i'm sure you've all been very concerned.  i've had a very busy week volunteering for the worldfilm festival here in tartu, an amazing festival of ethnographic documentary films: http://www.worldfilm.ee.  a great programme - if you can be in town at the right time next year, it comes highly recommended!

anyway, this show went out on time, but i never got a chance, amongst watching 36 films in 6 days, to send this playlist, but better late than never.  the playlist for the show that just went out yesterday will follow along shortly...

so, #276 featuring several unreleased works, including a topical recording made the previous week during austin's south by southwest arts festival.  also another free downloadable mp3 album, this one from eue, some selections from one of bernu rits' micro-releases (limited edition of 6, anyone?) on their own molmika label, and some reworked tape noise retrospective from the legendary chop shop.

275: 2010.03.14

this edition has been produced in montreal, canada by regular contributor france jobin, as part of her series my favorite things.  for more information visit her website at http://www.i8u.com.  france says:

Framework - i8u - my favorite things (Installment  #4)

Bonjour,  I am france jobin, better know as i8u.  Welcome to  "these are a few of my favorite things".

As mentioned in earlier installments, my interpretation of field recording based works, is very broad however, the thread I like to follow is to find  artists who have mastered  their unique identity through the music of sound.

This is the 2nd part of "my favorite things" devoted to nvo.  The label is nvo, non visual objects, was founded in 2005 by Heribert Friedl and Raphael Moser. In 2007, nvo released   : Extract, Portraits of Soundartists, a book and 2 cd's.

The next hour will be devoted to the 2nd cd's issued as well as excerpts from the book.

from the introduction:

"Since we started the label Nonvisualobjects two years ago, many collaborations with artists worldwide have arisen, a large, growing network has evolved and an extensive body of work has been formed that we would like to explore and try to sum up. The book developed from the idea of presenting an extract of artists involved in the current experimental electro-acoustic music scene, often following a rather reduced approach in their work. We would like to present artists that work in different areas in this field of electro-acoustic music, to cover a large spectrum even in this quite specific area.

With essays, interviews, photos, drawings and other materials presented in this book, we try to look at the motivation and intention behind the sound production from different perspectives, to possibly allow for a new/extended approach to this form of music. Many of the artists involved in this project do not exclusively work with sound, but also in other artistic disciplines. In this book we would like to present these other sides of their work to allow crossreferences/crosslinks to open up new aspects of the music.

The chapters consist of collage-like contributions. Images and text should not necessarily be regarded as complete units, but are open to various possibilites of interpretation.

It was not our intention to present a discourse in theories of art and music. It was also not our wish to present a curated work on a specific topic. Instead we wanted to show very personal portraits created by the artists themselves, which describe their way of working, the methodology of their sound production and which also portray the artist’s physical and not only their intellectual environment – where one lives, things of everyday life, things of interest and inspiration.

In the fast moving times of the digital era, it was also our wish to, at least partly, hold on to an analogue medium. Should the inevitable decay of digitally stored media ever lead to the disappearance of much of contemporary art and culture, the possibility to refer to this book would still remain."

274: 2010.03.07

a rather dense regular edition this week with some great textures and contrasts, and several free-to-download mp3 releases.  mysterybear's elementally-themed release (available free from stasisfield - see links below) contrasted nicely with daniel menche's reworked recordings of waterfalls, and richard garet's fine textures complimented dario moratilla's self-released percussive soundfields (available directly from his blog - again, link below).  we also heard sounds from irr. app. (ext.)'s latest offering on the always intriguing helen scarsdale agancy, and a framework introduction recorded for us by diemo schwarz.

another announcement this week - framework has a lot of listeners, and we like to consider ourself a community effort, so we'd like to extend and offer our voice further for announcements.  we're unsure exactly how we will structure this (it depends largely on your reaction), but we would like to be able to present our listeners with information on upcoming events, projects, opportunities, etc.  we will likely not be able to announce individual gigs or releases, but events that people might be willing to travel for, calls for contributions or projects from new labels, conferences, etc, etc.  if you have some field-recording related news that your trying to get out there, let us know and we'll see what we can do...

#273: 2010.02.28

this edition of framework:afield has been produced by in montreal, canada by nimalan yoganathan.  for more information see http://nimalanyoganathan.blogspot.com.  about the show:

LILIRA: SOUNDSCAPES OF INUKJUAK

"Lilira" is the Inuttitut word used to describe a respectful and slightly nervous feeling towards nature.

Nimalan Yoganathan is the first artist to be funded by Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec's recently established Nunavik Fund for the Arts and Literature program. As a result, he participated in an artist residency in Inukjuak, Nunavik during July and August 2009. He was studying and recording the sonic environment to gain insight into the richness of Inuit culture. This included both natural sounds such as the wind and huskies, as well as cultural sounds including carvers at work, throat singing, and the intricate rhythms of the Inuttitut language. These field recordings serve as the compositional foundation for this radio art piece.

Listeners are immersed within evolving cultural portraits of Inukjuak. Field recordings are sometimes complemented by electronic gestures in an attempt to convey the inherent musicality hidden throughout this vast Arctic landscape.  Man-made synthesized sounds harmonize with and mimic the timbral and rhythmic properties of Inukjuak's soundscapes, similar to how Inuit throat singing often employs the human body in imitating the songs of geese and mosquitoes.

The social and spiritual significance of sounds and how aural cues are used in Inuit cultural practices such as hunting and fishing serve as narratives in this work. As part of his residency, Nimalan also led weekly sound art workshops for youths between age 13 and 16, during which they were taught outdoor field recording techniques. Each youth was given their own digital recorder to document their sound walks around the community. Nimalan has included portions of their field recordings in this installation so as to juxtapose their sonic perceptions with those of his own.

All material heard between 8:41 and 15:14 of this piece was recorded by the youths from the workshops.

Special thanks to: Tommy, Tukai and Matt (workshop participants), Nunavimmi Pigiuravik School, Avataq Cultural Institute, and Makivik Corporation

BIO
Nimalan Yoganathan is a Montreal sound artist and musician. He completed his  studies in Electrical Engineering at McGill University in 2004 and recently graduated  from Concordia University’s Electroacoustic Music program. He currently focuses on the  integration of field recordings into his multimedia works from his travels through bustling cities, desolate
landscapes, and spiritual sites. In a time when global communities are progressively being plagued by noise pollution, Nimalan  believes it is crucial to preserve and accentuate the subtle but musical sounds hidden all  around us. Nimalan is also involved with radio production, installation art, and sound design  for film, dance, and theatre. He has released experimental Dub and Hip-Hop albums on  labels including Le Son 666 and Panospria (No_Type). His works have been disseminated at numerous festivals and venues including MUTEK, Suoni per il Popolo, Pop Montreal, Art’s Birthday, OBORO, and Darling Foundry.

#272: 2010.02.21

a slow-burn edition this week, fueled largely by the coupling of the swimming tones of nicholas szczepanik's chiasmus release and the oceanic wildlife recordings of heike vester.  we also heard some unreleased work (available for download on his website) from london-based italian artist emanuele costantini, and the most recent release from the legendary robert hampson (loop / main / godflesh).  all this began with a framework introduction recorded for us in birmingham by regular framework contributor (he also makes an appearance on the framework250 compilation) martin clarke.

an announcement for you this week: framework's host in portugal, the lisbon-based radio zero, has asked us to help spread the word about an open call for radio works: coming up later this year is the latest edition of the radialx radio art festival in lisbon, and they are accepting proposals now for broadcasts to take place during the festival.  for more info have a look here: http://www.radialx.radiozero.pt.

and don't forget, the framework250 compilations are still available, but they're going fast!  we're limiting each edition to 250 copies, which are already more than half gone.  so if you've been thinking about securing yourself a copy don't wait - visit the framework website to donate, and remember that 25% or your donation goes directly to resonancefm in london.

a show from the road this week - i've been in berlin for the transmediale festival and a gig at rinus van alebeek's das kleine field recordings festival.  spent some time there with aporee.org's udo noll, who we hope will be producing some programs for us in the not too distant future.  if you're not familiar with aporee, radio aporee, and the aporee soundmaps, i highly recommend you go and check it all out at http://aporee.org/maps.

meanwhile, great sounds as ever this week, including a few free downloadable releases (dallas simpson and aaron ximm).  enjoy the show!

#269: 2010.01.31

first off, if you remember the troubles we were having with the frameworkradio domain last week, i can now happily announce that everything is now resolved, all emails are getting through to the proper addresses, and all websites are where they should be.  sorry for the confusion over those 10 days or so - again, if you tried to get in touch with me at a frameworkradio address from around the 18th of januray until now, it's possible i didn't receive your mail.  this shouldn't happen again; my dns hosting is now in a much more reliable and stable place and should that should remain that way for the foreseeable future.

this week's edition of framework:afield was produced in boston, massachusetts, usa, by michael bullock.  for more information visit his website at http://www.finenoiseandlight.net.  mike says:

This program is a suite of accidental or overheard performances: Street musicians warming up in Amsterdam.  Mighty pipe organs being tuned or practiced.  The effervescence of street fairs celebrating two kinds of New Years: January 1 in Salzburg, and Diwali in Queens, NY.  These events and others are framed by operational misfires: user errors on the part of the recordist, hitting record and pause at the wrong times.  And in the center, a shadowy journey through an altered radio landscape in rural New York.

Part 1 (1"-17"): Churches

Nantes - Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul; Paris - Église Sainte-Sulpice

What cathedrals sound like between masses: choirs heard through the door, organs being practiced or tuned.

A few coins are dropped in a metal box.

Part 2 (17"-25"): Markets

Amsterdam - Rembrandtsplein and environs

Street musicians prepare to have a few coins dropped in their instrument cases.

Paris - flea market at Place Monge

User error.  Trumpeters play along with a CD regardless.

intermission (25"-42"): New York

Accra, NY - Evidence performance at Wave Farm

The source material are micro-transmissions of original music by Evidence, picked up on two radios carried around WaveFarm's fields at night.  The act of tuning mixes multiple micro-transmissions.  Other sounds come from cicadas, whispers, and the sound of the recorder's mics rubbing against the inside of a jacket pocket.

Manhattan - Max Neuhaus' Times Square installation

User error.  The street hums on regardless.

Part 3 (42"-55"): New Years

Queens, NY - Diwali street festival

Salzburg - New Year's Eve

The city of Mozart is overwhelmed by live rock bands on New Year's Eve, 2005-2006.  We escape to the castle overlooking the city and listen to techno and church bells float up to us from below.  The night winds down to a lone guitarist and the sounds of oversized chess pieces in a public square.

Thanks to Evidence (Scott Smallwood and Stephan Moore) and free103point9's Wave Farm in Accra, NY].   Also thanks to Linda Aubry Bullock who helped me record several of the clips.

#268: 2010.01.24

an announcement to make this week, as we're having some temporary problems with the frameworkradio.net domain.  we're in dns hosting limbo at the moment, so until we get it sorted no requests for frameworkradio.net (website or email) will go through.  the website, however, is still online, and can be found fully operational here:

http://www.murmerings.com/radio

meanwhile, if you sent anything to any ...@frameworkradio.net email address on or after the 18th of january, it is likely we didn't receive it.  please reply to the address sending this mail, and it should arrive with no problems.

hopefully this will all be sorted out before the next playlist.  i will confirm then that it has been, but in the meantime please use the addresses above...

so!  on to more interesting things: another dive into our bottomless backlog of submissions this week, featuring heavily manipulated field recordings from gintas k's hometown of marijampole, industrial (in the literal sense) sounds from the solo project of spain's pilar baizan, baseline, and spacious compositions by celer and brendan murray with richard garet on the ever-beautifully packaged, brooklyn-based label unframed.  all this began with a framework introduction recorded for us in new zealand by grant finlay (and children).

and don't forget, even with our website problems, you can still go to http://www.murmerings.com/radio to become a framework supporter, donate, and receive a copy of one of the framework250 celebratory compilations.  feedback is starting to come in, and it is good!  full tracklists and track info available online.  we've all heard this kind of thing before, but if each of you were willing to become a subscriber for just  €1 per month, it would make a big difference...

this edition has been produced in montreal, canada by regular contributor france jobin, as part of her series my favorite things.  for more information visit her website at http://www.i8u.com.  france says:

Framework - i8u - my favorite things (Installment  #3)

Bonjour,  I am france jobin, better know as i8u.  Welcome to  "these are a few of my favorite things", the first segment of 2010.

As mentioned in earlier installments, my interpretation of field recording based works, is very broad however, the thread I like to follow is to find  artists who have mastered  their unique identity through the music of sound.

For the next two editions of "my favorite things", i will focus on a particular label based in Vienna. The label is nvo, non visual objects and it was founded in 2005 by Heribert Friedl and Raphael Moser. In 2007, nvo released   : Extract, Portraits of Soundartists, a book and 2 cd's.
The next hour will be devoted to the 1st cd's issued as well as excerpts from the book.

from the introduction:

#266: 2010.01.10

our first good ol' standard show since - let's see - september, 2009!  our framework250 celebrations have finally come to an end, and we're quite pleased to finally be delving into the ever-growing pile of submissions that have been waiting so patiently in the corner while we not-very-subtley celebrated our landmark 250th show for, well, something like 15 shows.  but there you go, we never were one for understatement.  and some real gems this time around - for one, the absolutely stunning catastrophe point #5 (with trumpets!) from lethe and the ever-brilliant intransitive records from my own dear hometown of boston.  i've been a fan of lethe's abandoned warehouse recordings in the catastrophe point series since the beginning, but this one has definitely taken the biscuit.  also some very lovely  shimmering drones from jamie drouin and yann novak, and some texture and crunch from thomas tilly (aka ) and morfrom.

ah, but!  you have not yet heard the phrase framework250 for the last time!  because now that the celebrations are over, the souvenirs can begin!

the framework250 celebratory compilations are now finished and ready to ship!  man, were they a lot of work, and man, do we think they look and sound great.  42 artists bringing you 40 exclusive works on your choice of 2 double-disc editions (so that's 4 discs in all), featuring all the framework regulars and favorites (jeph jerman, chris watson, tarab, giancarlo toniutti, jim haynes, toshiya tsunoda, peter cusack, steve roden, phill niblock, and many, many more...) in hand-cut, hand-folded, hand-silk-screened opaque origami sleeves, with inlay cards printed on 100% recycled estonian-made paper from the rapina village paper factory, about 20km from me here in mooste, with sounds slow-burnt onto the highest quality taiyo yuden cdrs, and hand-stamped with custom made rubber stamps.  whew.  what's more, the donation you make to get yourself one (or both!) is a great sign of support for framework and our ability to continue, and as always, 25% or your donation goes directly to resonancefm in london.

to donate and get one or both of the framework250 compilations, and to see images of the releases and full tracklists, go to http://www.frameworkradio.net/framework250.  go!  now!
